The VMAs did occur a couple of months or so before the album release, though, and was more of a tribute than album promo. But, ok, I guess it could count as album promo- it was a track that appears on Number Ones, and the performance could be viewed on YouTube and all since it aired.

Only 25 albums in the top 200 have sold over a million copies! That's just ridiculous. And 3 of the top 5 are catalog albums. Crazy. Back in the day even low-selling albums could muster up a million. Why are you so surprised? It's been like that for the past 2 years.

13. Eminem 1,735,358 23. Jay-Z 1,514,758
I thought they would be a lot closer by the time the January doldrums sunk in.

Eminem and Jay-Z would be closer in sales, had Eminem issued a new edition of Relapse.

That list was just for the Top 100. The picture's a bit better for the Top 200, but that also includes a lot of catalog albums as well.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I haven't heard the latest Hollywood Undead yet, so I can't comment.
Such a shame, these albums should all be selling more, and all are primarily getting their play from alternative formats. I don't mean this week, I mean overall sales. 48 BREAKING BENJAMIN DEAR AGONY 14,384 -51 29,466 394,680 55 30 SECONDS TO MARS THIS IS WAR 13,071 -49 25,486 133,297 70 FLYLEAF MEMENTO MORI 11,069 -46 20,471 155,910 50 PARAMORE BRAND NEW EYES 14,225 -50 28,286 405,198 188 CHEVELLE SCI-FI CRIMES 4,243 -40 7,026 154,492 200 YEAH YEAH YEAHS IT'S BLITZ! 4,026 -1300% 4,653 198,563
Great updates, 111 PINK FLOYD DARK SIDE OF THE MOON 7,004 -67 21,360 8,839,454 153 MARLEY*BOB & THE WAILERS LEGEND 5,232 -51 10,630 10,164,362
Mariah should be selling a bit better, but ah the power of airplay. Kelly's sales are lacking too, such a shame with a decent album.
My other favorites are holding up there though, great.

If anyone wants to expand my list to include the full 200, be my guest! :) I'll do it myself when I get the chance if anyone really wants to see it. Haha is it bad that I just now noticed that BEP passed Eminem's sales?

It has been selling consistently every week for years since its release.

Don't read too much into Billboard 200 peaks of older albums. Due to the 19 year gap in allowing older albums to chart, often times only initial chart runs show up in databases.
In the case of Legend and countless other albums, ACTUAL weekly peaks are much higher in reality.

Yes I know but in Bob Marley's case he did only peak that high. It wasnt so popular at the time it came out and has had consistent sales through word of mouth I guess in the years since. It peaked that high on the album chart and has been a feature of the catalog chart for years since.

Janet is really flopping nowadays. She can't even beat Madonna and Britney's greatest hits and she had an ABC special and two award show performances. That's unfair. You had to single out Janet? "Make Me" isn't getting airplay or sales. The VMAs was a short performance of "Scream" and "Make Me" was 1 out of 7 songs performed at the AMAs. Madonna and Britney are both coming off of hot tours and radio hits. None of the 3 compilations are making HUGE impacts or have gone Gold, so they are in the same boat.

I'd have to look it up to be sure but during the countless times this album was #1 on the catalog chart, I believe it's ACTUAL weekly rank was much higher. Its highest comprehensive ranking from 2003-2009 was #41 It likely placed higher than 54 between 1991-2003 as well but that is unverifiable.

^ I know it seems surprising as it did top the catalog chart for 110 weeks and has had the second longest charting album of all time on Billboard (after Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon) but it did only peak at #54. Here is an extract from an article on USA Today: "Released in 1984, Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and the Wailers didn't stir it up on the charts. It entered Billboard at No. 168 and peaked at No. 54. But the reggae icon's posthumous collection has lived up to its name by becoming only the 17th album to exceed sales of 10 million copies since Nielsen SoundScan began tabulating in 1991." Mr. Marley's album was selling really consistently through the years. It only peaked @ #54? Is that a record or something?

( Full article: www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2009-07-29-marley-legend_N.htm)October 2008 it was the 41st biggest selling album of the week, it's highest peak in the years 2003-2009. If you ignore the policy and belief that old albums do no exist between 1991 and 2009, then countless albums have peaked higher than they are listed in the Billboard 200. The #54 peak exists only because of an 18 year ban on charting of old albums. Had today's Billboard 200 rules been in place the whole 18 years,, then that 54 peak would be at least 41 and countless other albums would have higher peaks too. So this is what I am saying, Legend was at one point in 2008, the 41st biggest selling album of the week, a peak higher than 54 based on how they rank albums. I agree that in its initial chart run, it peaked at #54 but, it has been ranked higher than that in overall weekly album sales rankings (at least #41 and perhaps higher)

^Well, she is 43, so, yeah, she's going to have it tougher than she did. No 40+ female is going to be ruling the charts these days, anyhow. Seriously, have you not seen who has been at #1 on the album chart for the past month? I'd say that is "ruling the charts these days". It bugs me that people can make comments like these, coming up with any excuse to justify the poor sales of their favorite artist.
