Won't Gwen Stefani have a shot when she gets back to her solo career? Her name came to my mind also.

Won't Gwen Stefani have a shot when she gets back to her solo career? Maybe but the drop of success between her first and second albums was kind of big, so maybe she's not going to make it. The Sweet Escape (album) was saved by the huge success of the second single, but the sales from the album, and the rest of the singles were lackluster, minus 'Wind It Up' that did ok. Yes there was a significant drop in the sales from L.A.M.B. (4 million) to The Sweet Escape (1.7 million) but album sales did drop a lot from 2004 to 2007. But here is another way to look at it...Gwen, Kelly, and Mariah all ruled the radio and album charts in 2005 and all returned in 2007/2008 with new albums. Kelly flopped horribly and at the very least Gwen matched the success of Mariah's E=MC2 (perhaps even surpassed it). Almost 2 million in album sales with really only one hit single show's the stable fanbase was still there. However, since the question is about singles...The Sweet Escape was still a 2 million plus seller digitally so Gwen is still a strong digital seller. Even "Wind It Up" sold enough to get the song a top 10 showing on Billboard.
Posted by badrobot on Today at 13:52 But it's also worth noting that across her entire career both solo and with No Doubt, she's only had one #1 hit (although, of course, "Don't Speak" would've been an easy Hot 100 #1 had it been released commercially).
True, but "Don't Speak" was arguably the biggest hit of the 1990s and "Hollaback Girl" and "The Sweet Escape" finished in the top 3 of Billboard's Hot 100 charts for 2005 and 2007 respectively. So when she hits...she hits BIG. All this is probably irrelevant though as she has said she has no interest in pursuing any more solo albums in the immediate future...The new No Doubt album should be out by the end of 2010 so let's see how that does.

However, you can't deny that artists in 2007 were not selling what they did in 2004. Also, the fact that "The Sweet Escape" was her only airplay hit from the album contributed to the erosion (which I already pointed out in my previous post). Heck, artists with several radio hits struggled to reach 1.7 million (that TSE album sold in 2007) in 2009 lol.

Britney's Circus barely sold 1.6 million copies, but then again, she dropped promoting the album just like that

@ "Video Phone" is flopping. Hopefully, Beyonce is DONE with this album and the songs from it. And when the hell will Sade release her song digitally? I would love to see her enter the Hot 100. It's been nearly ten years since...

I've been hearing "Russian Roulette" a lot more lately on the radio. Is it still moving up the Hot 100?

It recently regained it's bullet on pop, but I think it died again after the year end effect ended. Yes, after checking the pop charts, it had a +32 bullet but since it was already #52 they purged it. As for the Hot 100 itself, no, it's already going down.

Almost doesn't count, as you know. ;) Plus, it's a man's world, remember- more accepting than a female who is 40+.
Mimi always has catered to the young crowd, who she sees as her "equals"- but even she isn't immune to radio turning the other way (as she's witnessed already, especially with follow-up singles from the last two albums).
