Katharine's numbers may be low. But weren't Taylor Hicks' numbers even lower? Therefore, they're (relatively) not THAT bad. It's what you'd expect from an idol flop. I wonder what Fantasia's opening week will be for her next album! Taylor's were 9k first week with #2. But he is Indy now though he released in a much better time of year.

Taylor Hicks was never, ever mainstream. So he wasn't going to smash beyond the first couple of months of his first album's release. Same with Bo Bice. And although Kat tried mainstream, clearly that was a wrong fit (as it was for Bo). Being on Idol won't help sustain a mainstream career, period, but especially so if the artist isn't mainstream to begin with.

Is this make or break time for 'American Idol?'
CNN) -- There was a time when "American Idol" was unstoppable in the ratings.
For the past several years, Tuesday and Wednesday nights have been destination television for millions as they watched and voted for their favorite contestant.
The formula was fairly simple: Take a host of hopefuls, add in a goofy, yet nurturing judge (Paula Abdul), a slang-spewing, middle-of-the-road one (Randy Jackson), a tyrant (Simon Cowell), and a pearly toothed host (Ryan Seacrest) and watch the Nielsen numbers bubble -- sometimes more than 30 million viewers an episode, unheard-of numbers in these thinly sliced audience days.
But this season, the show's ninth, things have changed. Abdul is gone and the buzz continues to build that Cowell is soon to follow. The ratings, after peaking in the sixth season, have declined.
Just one season after many fans expressed their displeasure at the addition of fourth judge Kara DioGuardi, the announcement that comedienne/talk show host Ellen DeGeneres would take over Abdul's seat was met with less than overwhelming enthusiasm.
Could it be that the reign of "Idol" may be drawing to a close?
"Every show has a life cycle," said Chicago Tribune TV critic Maureen "Mo" Ryan. "I think ['Idol'] has reached that point in its maturity where it's not necessarily guaranteed to end up on the top of the ratings heap every single night, every single week, every single year. I think it will certainly be high up there, but I don't think it will be as huge a phenomenon as it has been."
The show still has a hardcore fan base, of course.
Dave Della Terza, creator of the Web site Vote for the Worst, where viewers are encouraged to cast their ballots for some of the more "interesting" contestants, said many fans get completely wrapped up in the show.
"People get really invested in it," he said. "We chronicle a lot of this on the Web site in that 'American Idol' has these crazy, rabid fans who will do anything for their favorite contestant and I think that's why [the fans] come back every season, because of that personal investment."
Yet over the years, he said, "Idol" fever has cooled a bit, as evidenced by the lack of superstar status of many of the recent winners.
"The last big star the show created was Chris Daughtry," Della Terza said, referring to the rocker who placed fourth on season five on the show and went on to sell millions of records and be nominated for a Grammy. "At this point, I think people are watching and realizing that it's not as exciting as it once was because the people who win don't necessarily go on to have these great careers." Critic Ryan said the softening of the show's ratings is not surprising, given the different viewing options available to television audiences. And even on its worst day, most TV executives "would give a body part to have 'Idol's' ratings," she said. (Fox's competition has referred to the show as the "death star.")
But this season may prove to be an interesting one, given that Abdul's departure marks the first time an original judge has bid goodbye. Ryan also said if Cowell ends up leaving, it could prove disastrous.
"If this is Simon's last season then it is definitely going to be the last time we see 'Idol' reach its level of hugeness," Ryan said. "For me, that would be the tipping point toward 'American Idol' being a very, very popular and important show, but not necessarily the show that slays every other show out there."
"American Idol" runs on personalities, and producers are banking on Ellen DeGeneres to fill the void left by Abdul. "Her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel," "Idol" producer Simon Fuller said in a statement when DeGeneres was announced.
Devoted "Idol" watcher Kerri Lynn Pleasant said the addition of DeGeneres to the show is generating plenty of excitement for her as a fan, despite the many negative comments she has heard from other viewers who question the choice.
"[DeGeneres] knows stage presence," said Pleasant, a teacher who added that she will miss Abdul as a judge. "She may not have the music background, but she's got the entertainment background and I think that's going to help a lot on 'Idol.' "
Cheryl A. Young is also rooting for DeGeneres on the show despite the naysayers. Young taught season two runner-up Clay Aiken when he was a student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
"She's funny and she knows show business," Young said. "She loves music and I think she will definitely be able to recognize talent."
If the adage that any publicity is good publicity holds true, even the debate over DeGeneres' suitability for the show might help draw in curious viewers.
Bob Payne, the editor for "Idol Confessions," Seattletimes.com's "American Idol" blog, said the show's producers have done well to exploit buzz. Last season, contestant Adam Lambert, who finished second, generated wildly differing opinions thanks to his "manscara" makeup and dramatic performances.
Payne said "Idol" occupies a unique position in television, and can always draw on that strength.
"It has a wide fan base demographic," Payne said. "There aren't so many shows that have such a wide age range in who can watch it, from kids to older people, and I think that's kind of the secret of its success."

Well, to be honest, I kind of hope AI is over, because there hasn't been a really interesting singer in the last two seasons, and aside from David Cook, none of them even reached platinum sales.

Well, I could say there hasn't been many interesting singers to be signed without appearing on AI, too (several artists who don't appeal to me in the slightest appear on the current CHR chart). I'm ready for the show to end, but not because of the talent that comes out of it (some of them could have been signed without the show, and many of them can sing far better than the average "artist"). American Idol is just a tired premise that has run its course.

I'm not over the show in theory. But they need to FIRE ALL THE JUDGES & RYAN. And start over. They are paying them like 60 million dollars, and they can't even remember the names of contestants, songs, and keep falling asleep. Fire them, please! I hate all the judges, they're utterly useless and seem to have very limted knowledge of music, and don't give a fuck about anything other than themselves and their paychecks. How hard is it to rember 12 people's names?! You should at leats know more than 20 songs if you're going to judge a freakin SINGING COMPETITION. I could judge better than these idiots! I like the show's premise, but its been carried out the wrong way witb the wrong players. Simon can go fuck himself gently with a chainsaw. And do it to Hairan Gaycrest too. And Randy "Dogg" Jackson. I want these fools off of my TV! Their egoes are so out of control! Talk about being a caricature of yourself!

^^ Er... I'm not a fan of the judges either (last season sucked in large part because the judges were the focus), but Ryan Seacrest is actually a good host, as long as he stops quipping with Simon, because that's so tired. Ryan remembers the contestants names; he remembers stuff about them; he generally does a good job of keeping the show moving. Yeah, I get tired of seeing him everywhere too with his 50 bajillion jobs, but there's a reason he has those jobs, and at least he's earning all his money.

^ Ryan is annoyiong as hell. I never liked him. Never will. I stopped watching E News because he invaded the place. Seriously. I don't get the hype about him, hes distinctively unlikeable to me. I want them all gone, Ryan included. End of story. I can't enjoy the show with these people messing it up.

Why exactly is this in the HDD thread? It's not really off topic. If you correlate it with current sales of AI singers and all....

Being on Idol won't help sustain a mainstream career, period, but especially so if the artist isn't mainstream to begin with. I think that is generally true. That is why I'm glad that Kat has gone the route she has. She simply fits better here and can excel and grow in that arena. She is not a Top40 Mainstream artist at least as it is configured today with the stranglehold that HipHop dance music has on it. But she has found herself now and she has grown as an artist. She certainly is talented and may very well be able to have a modestly successful career and keep working and making music and film. I think if you said that to her before she went on the show that it would end up like this she would have been very pleased. Idol found 3 real stars and gave a few others the chance to continue working in the career they never really would have had a chance to otherwise. I'm happy for her that she turned out to be one of the lucky ones.

YOUR FIRST 2010 WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW: While anything can happen over the weekend, it now appears that Ke$ha will be the one to unseat Susan Boyle from the top of the chart. Here's how the Top 10 looks headed into the weekend: Ke$ha (RCA/RMG debut) 120-125k Susan Boyle (Columbia) 100-105k Alicia Keys (J/RMG) 60-65k Lady Gaga, The Fame (Interscope) 60-65k Mary J. Blige (Geffen) 50-55k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 40-45k Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 40-45k Alvin & The Chipmunks, The Squeakquel (Rhino) 35-40k Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster (Interscope) 30-35k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 30-35k In related news, the head of RCA/Jive has just changed the spelling of his name to Barry Wei$s. At least Alicia isn't going down fast, despite her lackluster era as far as singles go. Good numbers for Ke$ha. Everything else looks kind of sad after Christmas sales, but I guess those are good numbers for Taylor, Justin, GaGa and BEP.

Justin Bieber needs to GTFO so that the top ten would consist of females (or female driven acts)

^ MJB and the Chipmunks would still be pushing big hard cock into the top 10.
And thank god, the chicks have made a mess of this industry.

Beautiful numbers for 'The Fame' considering the current single isn't on that album. I just wish TFM was around 50k but isn't it only available at digital retailers?
Kat's numbers are fine. She said herself that she wanted to get out of the 'organic' scene of the industry and create her own thing....so for not having a record out in YEARS and no single charting on radio (besides HIA at #21 on AC), those numbers are fine

McPhee actually is fortunate to appeal to 13K or so fans, as she was the runner-up in the worst top two finish of Idol's history. Other seasons may have had one lackluster finisher in the top two, but at least one of them had something going for them (at the time, anyhow).

Kat is not an indie artist. She's on Verve which is a division of Universal. What indie artist gets the Today show, Leno, Regis & Kelly for their promo. So considering all that I don't think 13K is anything spectacular for an opening week. Other Idols who've actually gone indie and had no TV promo at all have done about that or better. But still it's OK and at least she's not attempting another Pop album.
The problem for Idol is that nobody from S8 is matching the numbers from past seasons. Too bad SuBo goes down this week but at least she's still expected to sell 100K.

BEP is also a male-driven act -- 3 out of 4 are men and will.i.am is the driving force with most of the vocals. Fergie doesn't even appear on some songs of theirs.
Here's hoping Tra$ha drops like a rock.
