HEY LADY! Capitol Nashville’s Lady Antebellum a Lock for #1 with Possible 400k Bow
January 27, 2010
This should heat things up a bit in the selling records biz.
With the Grammy telecast this Sunday, Capitol Nashville’s Lady Antebellum, up for a pair of awards after garnering a Best New Artist nomination next year, will bow at #1 on next week’s HITS Album sales chart with Need You Now. Right now that total looks to be between 375-400k, which, in a word, is HUGE for the country trio featuring Hillary Scott, Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley, whose cebut album cracked the mainstream sales chart, the first to do so since Dixie Chicks in 2007.
A tip of the 10-gallon hat to label head Mike Dungan, who’s also responsible for big EMI moneymakers Keith Urban and surprise country star Darius Rucker.
The Hope for Haiti Now album continues to sell through and should remain #2, with a second-week total heading toward 150k.
Capitol/EMI has the week’s other top newcomer in former three-time Grammy nominee Corinne Bailey Rae’s sophomore effort, The Sea, the U.K. singer-songwriter’s first album since the sudden death of her husband two years ago, on target for a debut between 50-55k.
Arista/RMG’s Barry Manilow returns with The Greatest Love Songs of All Time, in the 40-45k range, just in time for that special someone on Valentine’s Day.
Manhattan/EMI’s PBS perennial Celtic Woman looks to be between 30-35k, while the 1,876,456th edition of Razor & Tie’s cottage industry Kidz Bop Kidz should do 25-30k.
Sire’s Never Shout Never, the nom de band for midwestern 18-year-old singer/songwriter Christofer Drew, will see its major label debut, What Is Love?, crack the 15-20k sales mark after a series of independently released EPs that gained traction on MySpace.
The market was up 3% vs. last week, down 9% vs. same week last year and now down 6% year to date. And you can soon read all about it on your iPad.

Massive sales for Antebellum! :o Atleast one Lady act is going to #1. And great sales for Corinne Bailey Rae as the single is getting almost no exposure anywhere, it's mainly 90% word of mouth/fanbase!

Incredible tally for Lady A. I'm one of the few who is just not into "Need You Now," but the song has clearly connected far and wide, and now the album is doing the same. Congratulations to them.
Respectable tally for Corinne Bailey Rae, too, without an aggressive promotional push. Good to see.

^Given that Ke$ha's album is down to around 35K, I'd think 25K-30K.

I think Need You Now will also have a weaker than normal drop during the second week.

^Do you you mean a stronger-than-normal drop? (meaning, not as much as the norm) A weaker-than-normal drop would be anything above 70% these days.

Amazing for Lady A. Had it come out during the holiday season, 500K may have happened.

Lady A! Incredible. I was way off-base with my prediction, haha. I'm glad NYN blew up for them. I'm hoping Perfect Day and Hello World see release. Both are incredible. Other than, I'm indifferent, but still, wow.

I saw that big Lady A debut coming. The label has really done a good job of setting this band up. The band should be sending some really big gifts to their PR staff.

I didn't notice at first, but after reading Ent. Weekly's review of Lady A's album, I can hear the similarity between "Need You Now" and Alan Parsons Project's "Eye in the Sky." Both good tracks, I enjoy both. :)
The projection for Lady A. is great- superstar opening numbers for a January release is a good thing.

So we've gone the whole month of January with at least one album 100k+ every week (calendar month -- not BB month -- although that also had every week with at least one album 100k+). I think you have to go back to at least 2005 or earlier to see that happen during January.

That number is truly incredible. Especially since they're kind of a new act and it's January... Just insane.

Amazing results for both, Lady Antebellum and Rae, especially considering that both albums were released in January 2010...
