'We Are the World' gets a 2010 update for Haiti Posted: 10:52 AM ET Quincy Jones is pulling together another all-star team for a remake of perhaps the most well-known charity song, "We Are the World."
So far, Jones has Wyclef Jean, Rickey Minor, Justin Bieber, Jason Mraz and Lionel Richie on deck for the millennial remix, not to mention Sugarland, Anthony Hamilton and Julianne Hough. The recording session will take place on Monday, February 1, in the exact same A&M Records recording studio as the "We Are the World" recording did in 1985. All proceeds for the album will go towards Haiti's relief efforts.
Richie co-wrote the original record with Michael Jackson for African famine relief, and the single was a massive success. MJ and Richie were joined by Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder, among a host of others.
Jones hasn't released the complete list of performers yet, but more information should come after Monday's studio session. One person who will not be there, however, is Taylor Swift.
There were Internet rumors circulating Thursday that Swift and Kanye West would be able to join hands and sing together for a charitable cause, but Swift's representative said that wasn't true.
"It will be a wonderful event, but Taylor is flying out to Australia the same night as the Grammys, right after the show, to start her tour," her representative told CNN.

The original was cheesy, for a good cause. This will be just as cheesy, and for a good cause, but likely will not be as enjoyable. I mean, it has Justin Bieber. on it, for cryin' out loud. Well, maybe he won't be one of them ain voices (like how LaToya Jackson wasn't for the original).

so..every cheap and mid-famous singer will be on this version that will be NOTHING near the original..i mean..no problem with katharine, julianne, miley and any of the singers who will give his voice..but they aren't that big like the stars who made the original..i mean..the big stars from now seems to be very busy..We Are The World 2010 would be totally different with real stars..the only really famous singer in the new version seems to be Miley Cyrus and in some way Julianne Hough, Justin Bieber, Jason Mraz & Mya..the rest is totally meh..what happened with people like Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Madonna, Eminem, Faith Hill, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Janet Jackson, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Prince, Timbaland, Mariah Carey, Kesha, The Black Eyed Peas, U2..i mean..any of them and some other really stars could made a worthy new version of WATW..this version will be completely irrelevant in six months..

'We Are The World' Remake Brings Lil Wayne, P!nk, More Together For Haiti Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Barbra Streisand and even Vince Vaughn unite for the epic recording session. LOS ANGELES -- The energy was electric Monday night (February 1) at Henson Studios as more than 80 of music's biggest stars gathered for a charity remake of "We Are the World" in support of Haitian earthquake relief. "I feel like a kid in a candy store," Wyclef Jean said, speaking to the press about the idea of remaking such an iconic song, which is getting production help from RedOne and Will.I.Am. "What's bigger than a contribution is that you lend your voice," the Haitian native said earlier in the day to his peers while trying to inspire them during the session, which began around 3 p.m. and was expected to last well into the night. Among the voices in the 81-member choir were Pink, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Nick Jonas, LL Cool J, Robin Thicke, Celine Dion, Akon, Rob Thomas, Wyclef, Jeff Bridges, Vince Vaughn, Barbra Streisand, Jordin Sparks, Good Charlotte's Madden brothers, Tony Bennett, Josh Groban, Snoop Dogg, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Keri Hilson, Jamie Foxx, Tyrese, Katharine McPhee, Sean Garrett, Will.I.Am, Carlos Santana, Melanie Fiona, Enrique Iglesias, Toni Braxton, Jason Mraz, Miley Cyrus, Busta Rhymes, Nicole Scherzinger, Nicole Richie, Usher, Julianne Hough, Raphael Saadiq, Zac Brown, India.Arie, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, Musiq Soulchild, Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson, Fonzworth Bentley, Kid Cudi, Iyaz, Bizzy Bone, Nipsey Hussle, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, Trey Songz, Faith Evans, Mya and Gladys Knight. (At press time, the full list of participants was not yet available.) Kanye, wearing a red jacket with sparkling gold crisscross accents, stood center in the front row, between Wyclef and Hudson. Among the soloists whose sessions were screened for journalists at press time were Bieber, Dion and Groban. Weezy also came out and humbly noted that he recorded the solo originally sung by Bob Dylan. The inspirational lyrics were laid down over a track that had a more modern Southern hip-hop bounce to it. The recording session took place almost 25 years to the day since the original song for African famine relief was recorded. "The experience was out of this world," said Bieber, who sang Lionel Richie's original opening line. The video for the song, which is being shot in 3-D, will debut February 12. www.mtv.com/news/articles/1631018/20100202/lil_wayne.jhtml

Where is Beyonce or Lady Gaga? Weren't they announced to be part of this?
I don't care if this is a mess. It's for a good cause and that's all that should matter anyway.

They oughta just write a new song. This is like a big metaphor for the state of the music industry. "We Are The World" wasn't even all that good, but it was listenable, well-intentioned and in tune with its time. Can't they find anybody in the industry to write a song like that for today?

This really shows the state of this indsutry...This is irrelevant...I'm glad they're trying to raise money, but I'd rather the artists just donated money instead of ruining this old song...

Janet to take part in 'We Are The World' remakeJanet is expected to participate in a new version of "We Are The World" that is being recorded for Haiti earthquake victims, according to a report from Reuters. Most of the singers participating in the song, which included Barbara Streisand, Kanye West, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, LL Cool J, will.i.am, and Josh Groban, recorded their vocals together on Monday at the same Hollywood studio where the original version of the song was made. Janet, however, was not present at the session on Monday but rather is scheduled to sing her lines from a studio in Atlanta on Tuesday. As was reported yesterday, Janet is in Atlanta right now to film promotional materials for the release of Why Did I Get Married Too? More than 70 celebrities lent their voices to the re-recording of the song. None of the singers of the original song were invited to participate in the update, which was recorded once again under the oversight of Quincy Jones and the song's co-writer Lionel Richie. Richie confirmed to MTV.com that Janet will be singing Michael Jackson's lines from the song. janet-xone.com/

I'd rather that someone had written a new song for the occasion. I ask again, is this remake really to draw more attention to the tragedy in Haiti, or are they using the tragedy as an excuse to remake this song and pay another tribute to Michael Jackson (who co-wrote it with Lionel Richie)? I'll repeat what I said in the same thread in the General Music News section: As charitable as Michael was, I don't think he would approve of this at all, because it smells of something so sickeningly opportunistic.

I have seen the picture and the names of the people involved, and I am sad to say that, except for a very few (Streisand, for one), on the whole this roster is by far a more undisciplined bunch than the original.
