Meanwhile, we are continuing to analyze test charts in preparation for the launch of Billboard’s first comprehensive country singles chart, driven by radio audience, paid digital downloads and streaming data. The new chart will employ a methodology similar to the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and will be positioned as the centerpiece of our country chart offerings in Billboard’s weekly print edition and on Billboard.com and Billboard.biz. Alongside fresh digital charts and other new content, the new comprehensive chart will be delivered midweek to Billboard Country Update subscribers. Although a launch date hasn’t yet been set, readers can expect a first-quarter debut.

Can someone post this week's chart?
As for "Country Hot 100", they need to be very careful about sales/airplay ratio. Otherwise, "If I Die Young" will be #1 for 15 weeks due to huge sales from pop fans.
I think something like 10 mil audience = 30k sales would work (divide sales by 3 then add airplay total). Here's an example of what'd happen with a huge sales #1 (digital sales from last week):
1. Toby Keith "Red Solo Cup" = 96k sales + 17.6 aud = 49.6 chart pts 2. Zac Brown Band "Keep Me In Mind" = 22.5k sales + 41.9 aud = 49.4 chart pts 3. Luke Bryan "I Don't Want This Night To End" = 47k sales + 33.4 aud = 49.1 chart pts
Here's an example if sales gap is smaller (digital sales from 2 wks ago):
1. Luke Bryan "I Don't Want This Night To End" = 52k sales + 33.4 aud = 50.7 chart pts 2. Zac Brown Band "Keep Me In Mind" = 20k sales + 41.9 aud = 48.6 chart pts 3. Toby Keith "Red Solo Cup" = 62k sales + 17.6 aud = 38.3 chart pts
I think this sales/airplay ratio might actually work. It'll be interesting what they come up with.

^I agree they need to be careful/smart if they are going to implement these changes in the chart. I hope the airplay-only chart still gets published, because a combination of sales and airplay doesn't measure much to me, except who is most popular on a commercial level. At least with an airplay-only chart, you can measure which songs are popular on the radio, and listeners have the ability to rate songs and request them. I know they don't get it perfect, but it's not skewed heavily in favor of those artists who can sell 50,000+ singles per week. Anyway, the Billboard Country Update did not publish this week (and it won't next week either) due to the holidays. However, the Billboard chart (audience numbers included) was just published HERE. This site publishes the chart each Wednesday, even through the holiday season.

Weren't they going to do a sales/airplay hybrid chart for country LAST year?

^Yeah, about this time last year they said it was going to come out but it never did and I think we all kinda just forgot about it. But now it sounds like they've done some more "work" on it and must be testing it or something like that, so it does sound like it will finally come out. I think it will be interesting, but at the same time I don't want to see the airplay-only chart become less important.

I think it will be interesting, but at the same time I don't want to see the airplay-only chart become less important. That's my thought. It will make for an interesting novelty chart, but it will be shambolic if the industry gives it any real weigh. It would completely re-define the industry, and not in a good way. Artists without cross-over appeal would be diminished, and future artists would be foolish to make music without cross-over appeal in mind.

^Exactly. I mean, songs that crossover can certainly be good songs, but usually they crossover because their sound allows them to...and I don't want to see all the different types of country sounds fuse into pop-oriented music. I like Lady A and Taylor as well, but I don't want to see "Need You Now" or "You Belong With Me" at the top of the chart for 3-4 months each just because their ridiculously high sales numbers are keeping them up there. You could have a song that a lot of country fans are buying, but 70% of its total sales could come from fans who never listen to country radio. So why should all those sales count for the song on the country chart?
I fear that artists like Sunny Sweeney would have even less of a chance at hitting the top 10. And also, songs don't sell nearly as well when they're the 3rd, 4th, or 5th single from an album, because by then a lot of people will already have bought the album. So it would be a lot tougher for artists to have a string of hits if their singles are selling less later in the album "cycle".
The more I think about it, the less I like this "hybrid" chart, and I guess I never really liked it in the first place. I thought it could be interesting but I just don't think it will be helping anything...I don't want to see a mandolin or steel guitar-laden song struggle just because it's not selling as much as a song laden with electric guitar and "pop" music beats. Those songs have a place too but I don't want to see them dominate the charts.
I know there's the Hot 100, but do any other genres (AC, Pop, Rock, etc) have any hybrid charts like this? I don't see the need for one at all. You have airplay and you have sales. One single sold at 99 cents is not equal to one spin on the radio and it doesn't make any sense to add them together. They're not even apples and oranges...they're things that are even more different than that. Measuring them combined doesn't tell us anything worthwile, at least in my opinion.

The 1/7 Billboard chart is now out. You can find it HERE. A few notes: All the Christmas songs will drop off next week and everyone will gain BIG, gaining back the airplay they lost over the Christmas weekend. There should be quite a few re-entries and debuts on the 1/14 chart.

I wonder if Tim McGraw's Christmas song might be able to chart for one more week, due to countdown spins. I don't listen to any of the countdown shows, so I'm not sure if they will play him, or maybe this is the week they do a year end countdown.

A couple of typos on the BCU pdf file. They messed up Sara Evans' entry, in grouping her name with the song title, then putting the audience total in the artist name column, the gain in the audience total column, and so on. Oops.
But the real doozy is on the Eli Young Band entry. Somehow, when they went to type in "Breaks", it came out as "Ovals", in the song name. How does that happen? The words only share two letters. Was there a goofy Theme Font enabled at that time, like Wingdings, and it got translated into that totally unrelated word? Weird.
Guess the proofread guy thought, based on last week, that Billboard was moving to a Tuesday night release of the BCU, and didn't show up to work today...

It's working fine for me. Maybe it's the file on your computer? Not sure.

I noticed the mysterious "A" as well, and when I clicked it I got an HTTP 404 error. The link that Fanofctrymusic posted works, though.

Wow I love that lead article about single climbing time and breaking new artists! How they charted it out since the 90s is brilliant.
