"I Gotta Feeling" likely will conclude with a better chart run than the other track from the 2000s to spend 14 weeks on top ("We Belong Together")- i.e. how Billboard ranks tracks by inverse points system. Terrific run for it- the track is inescapable.

Why, thank ya- but, not sure how it's a back-handed compliment. I didn't say anything one way or the other about Mimi's song- just that the Peas' track looks like it has had a better chart run. Since they both spent 14 weeks on top, it's a perfectly valid comparison and observation. :)

I'm glad to please y'all that are actively looking for "backhanded" compliments- don't want to disappoint now. Gosh forbid someone compares to big chart hits that spent the same number of weeks on top of the Hot 100. In any event, Mimi's having a good time introducing WBT as the "Song of the Decade" in her current tour, so I'm sure she's not bothered by IGF having the stronger run. The point is, is that IGF is a bonafide smash (there were some that thought the 14-week run would never be matched, recall). It's been some year on the Hot 100 for BEP.

"I Gotta Feeling" may end up surpassing "We Belong Together" as the number one song of the decade. The tie has been broken by weeks in the top ten..."WBT" logged 23, and so far "IGF" stands at 22. After weeks in the top ten, the tie is broken by weeks in the top 40. "IGF" is all but certain to surpass "WBT" for top 40 weeks, so if it scores just one more week in the top ten it will bypass Mariah for the number one song of the 2000s.
This one's a nail-biter in overtime folks!

One problem - the decade is over That's irrelevant. When Joel Whitburn publishes his next "Top Pop Singles" book he won't break up "I Gotta Feeling"'s weeks in the top ten when determining the number one song of the decade. Santana's "Smooth" spent several weeks at number one in 2000, but it's entire 12 weeks on top are factored into it's 90s ranking.

How is a songs performance in 2010 relevant at all to the best of the 00's?
Billboard has already published those charts
Now if they do a best of the century chart some time later, then perhaps

I've read it all. I wasn't saying anything in any sort of way bad about Mariah Carey. In fact I hope she retains the crown; I think having the #1 song two decades in a row is amazing. But for ANYONE to say "I Gotta Feeling" not counting because the decade ended is ridiculous. "One Sweet Day" wasn't the number one song of 1995 because most of its weeks at number one were in 1996? No. "Smooth" wasn't the biggest number one hit of 1999? If "I Gotta Feeling" spends one or two more weeks in the top ten then it will show up in all future chart books as the number one song of the 2000s. Is anyone debating that fact? All "best-of" lists are subjective in one way or another. Longest chart run, most airplay, most sales, etc. But the FACT stands that "IGF" will possibly show up in all future Record Research books as the biggest hit of the 2000s. It all comes down to how much longer it can stay in the top ten.

Strictly speaking about week-to-week trajectory, using an inverse point system, like Billboard does. IGF may end up with more points- that was the point. If a track peaked in a particular year, then all of its weekly chart rankings go toward that year (except for Billboard's year-end charts appear in December, of course). For Record Research purposes, Whitburn then would list by weeks in the top 10. But when assigning points based on week-to-week position, IGF could get the edge.
And of course I know a lot about Mimi- I'm a fan, we need light acts like Mim, and she does what she does well enough (oops, another backhanded compliment?) One does not need to be a super-duper-mega lamb to be considered a fan.

i'm not gonna get involved in this conversation about WBT vs. IGF, but what I do want to inform you all is that "Pants on the Ground" is currently at number 13 on iTunes!!!!!!! if that isn't breathtaking, then maybe the incredible single cover from iTunes will take your breath away lol. itunes.apple.com/us/album/pants-on-the-ground-single/id354184722This is sooooo off-topic but worthy of mentioning.

At this point I don't see IGF staying in the top 10 for a 23rd week. It returned this week because of Grammy performance buzz, but its airplay is down in the 30s...
