Sade Adu is the singer who is always on the covers of their albums. So that may be another reason why so many people mistaken the band as just the lead singer. Pretty common. At the Grammys in 2001, Sade was nominated for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance as a soloist. So, I think it's interchangeable. But Sade Adu is undoubtedly the star of the band. Anyway, Can Sade get another week at #1? They are saving some of their promotion until next week. Is there any notable releases next week? If there are no big releases I could see it doing three weeks at #1.

Sade has even won grammy's before in the best duo or group categories That's a moot point because Sade was also nominated in Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, which is a solo award.

The 'duo or group' part of that award means even the industry ackowledges that Sade is more than one person
Sade Adu is lead vocal of Sade

The 'duo or group' part of that award means even the industry ackowledges that Sade is more than one person Sade Adu is lead vocal of Sade Honey, I know exactly what it means, and I know exactly who they are. My point is that Sade has been nominated as a soloist. Had "By Your Side" won that Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, it would have went to Sade Adu, not the band.

Exactly. I don't think it's common knowledge to the general public that Sade is actually a band and not just the lead singer. I think it's quite interchangeable. Regardless of that, Sade is driving force of the band given she is the one who is on the album covers and sings all of the songs. It's just a common misconception.

There are countless examples of bands out there where one person is the "driving force" however, they are not referred to as solo artists either

Honey, you're clearly missing the point as usual. But saying that Sade isn't referred to as a solo artist is not fully true. Otherwise, we wouldn't be having this debate. The fact is Sade is a band, but there are thousands of instances where Sade is referred to as a solo artist. Your weak argument about the industry thinking of them as a group was refuted with another argument about the industry thinking of Sade as just Sade Adu. It's just a common misconception.

You are 100% correct, I don't get it
If you know Sade is a band, why are you arguing that Sade is 1 person and not several?
I don't have the CD sleeves in front of me at the moment but if you open one up, I am sure you will see a listing of who is a member of Sade.

Because the fact you keep quoting and correcting folks over the simplest things is annoying. I know Sade is a band, but I also know that it is a common misconception that Sade is just Sade Adu. I'm not arguing that Sade is a solo artist. Your Grammy argument was a weak one considering Sade was also nominated for a solo performance as well. Quincy Jones won R&B Group for "The Dude" as well. It's almost interchangeable. Stop nitpicking. You do the same thing with chart arguments. That is all.
Anyway, congrats to Sade (Sade Adu, band, or whatever). Hopefully, they hit a half milli. :)

Sade is a group
I too, for the longest time, thought Sade was one person, until I read the inside of their CDs. Trying to prove that Sade is "commonly" referred to as 1 person & therefore not really a group is a little silly.
Not everyone knew when I first mentioned it in this thread either.
Might be good information to share, given the new album
If you are offended by that....oh well

So you think saying people think Sade is a solo artist is silly when you yourself thought she was? Riiight.

Well thank you for single handed-ly introducing the concept of Sade being a group to Pulse. Only like two of the twenty-odd people who commented thought they weren't a group before you took it upon yourself to correct them.

whatever
but yet...we still have had multiple posts saying that...
Sade isn't really a group because most of the public doesn't see it that way

i think the whole point of this argument is to say that, to the average listener/casual fan, Sade is a person, and not a group, but in reality, Sade is a group, so should be referred to as such.

Regardless of whether or not most people know it or not, Sade IS a group. The end.

Apparently even people in the industry are confused. 1985September - The video for "Smooth Operator" was nominated for 2 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Female Video and Best New Artist. 1986January - Sade was nominated for an American Music Awards for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Video Artist. 1989January - Sade was nominated for an American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist. 2001February - Sade was nominated for a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist. April - Sade was nominated for a Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Female Artist - R&B. August - Sade was nominated for a Soul Train Lady of Soul Award for Best R&B/Soul Album: Solo (Lovers Rock). 2002February - Sade won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album (Lovers Rock) and was nominated for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance ("By Your Side"). www.rockonthenet.com/artists-s/sade_main.htm

Thhheeerrreeee'ssss too much confusion. ;)
Industry has acknowledged Sade as a solo act, for whatever reasons.
A similar instance woulde be Daughtry. The lead guy is Chris Daughtry, yet the band is named after his last name. There's no confusion over the fact that Daughtry isa band, so there shouldn't be for Sade. Every album has had "Sade are" in the liner notes. I know Best of Sade has it as such. Do the other guys add vocals at all? many times, other band members sing "backup." Maybe that's what causes the confusion. lol

Sade is the reverse Pussy Cat Dolls. Nicole sings all the parts and the others ar just back-up dancer, but they always get labled a group.

I've always thought Sade was a solo artist as well. Has "the band" ever been featured in any video? Regardless of who Sade is (are) those are very strong numbers for her (them).

Don't underestimate Sade's legacy and fanbase. We grew up with their music and ALWAYS support the band. I was expecting 250K, but we're HUNGRY for the new music!
