I have read alot of articles where people say that the older audience are the ones buying albums but how come it seems like alot of the chart toppers on Urban AC dont seem to sell nearly as many albums as the chart toppers on the other adult formats? Brian McKnight, Teena Maria, Patti Labelle, Vivian Green and Heather headly come to mind.

Because it's a much smaller format. It's average audience is about 15% of what the average pop audience is. If you were to look at Anita Baker scanning 500,000 and then weight that to pop, it would generate to almost 4M copies. So yes, the adults are buying the records, the audience just isn't as big.

Oh ok. that makes sense. So basically in order for them to sell more they would have to somehow find success at Urban as well as urban AC.

i think that was the problem with Tamyra Gray's cd not selling well. they only really pushed her single "Raindrops Will Fall" to uac and then not followed it up with a more uptempo song that either urban or top 40 could grab onto. if they had done that they might have gotten a video as well since Tamyra's label said a top 5 at uac would have gotten her a video. unfortunatly most uac type songs dont tend to get video's while a more upbeat song would have gotten Tamyra more airplay as well as video leading to more sales.
