Can a mainstream pop artist go gold without a hit ? Please, artists with Top 5 singles, like: Jay Sean (with a #1 single) Kid Cudi (with a #3 single) Jeremih (with a #4 single) you get the point ;) can´t even reach 400,000 copies sold of their albums. I wouldn't call Hudson´s album a flop. I bet it sits at 700,000 plus copies nowadays. U forgot the biggest one: Flo Rida Low and Right Round were #1 for 10 and 6 weeks, respectively and Low was the biggest song of 2008. Here's a quote from a Chart Watch article by Paul Grein, posted at the end of last year. "Flo Rida is what used to be called a "singles artist." "Low" and "Right Round" have sold a combined total of 9,378,000 downloads. But Flo's two albums, Mail On Sunday and R.O.O.T.S. (Route Of Overcoming The Struggle), have sold a combined total of just 663,000 copies."

Yeah, pop artists have the toughest time to sell albums. Lots of r&B, soul, ac, rock acts can sell lots of albums without a hit but when it comes to pop, you need your song on the radio and downloads blazing.
Of course these "names" are already famous and with a big fanbase but even when you apply that to pop, there`s trouble. LOL.

A commercial, mainstream pop artist ? Can you name a few that have done so recently ? Recently maybe not. Britney had a hit with her last album but I suspect she could even without one. Justin probably could. Others like Gaga it's hard to say. She hasn't been in that situation since the public discovered her. Of the new pop stars she's probably the only one I could see maybe doing so.

Many albums used to do that years ago. No one really cared about first week sales as much, just overall sales and longevity. Boy has time changed...

That is primarily because how an album fares in the first 4-6 weeks can determine how much push a record company puts on the artist. I think record companies believed more in their artist to develop them and give them more chances...now if you make one or two wrong turns it can be a career kill

Rude Boy's been taking off, I suppose. I think they also aired a pre-taped performance of Rude Boy from the week before on Ellen.

This week again, the top 10 albums sold more than the top 10 from last year by at least 2,000 copies.

What caused Eminem's surge? I have no clue. Maybe the false rumors of him getting back with Kim, IDK. My guess is it's for no paticular reason though.
