Wonder why there weren't any archive songs from the 1980s? Well....
AT10 Archives: #1 Songs of the Year from the 1980s:
1980: Call Me/Blondie
1981: Bette Davis Eyes/Kim Carnes
1983: Every Breath You Take/The Police
1985: Crazy For You/Madonna
1986: Stuck With You/Huey Lewis & The News
1987: I Wanna Dance With Somebody Who Loves Me/Whitney Houston
1988: Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car/Billy Ocean
Note that all of those year end #1's came from the Pop chart, although Casey didn't say that in any of the spotlite intros. It was a very interesting choice. The ones he left out were 1982 ("Open Arms" by Journey), 1984 ("Jump" by Van Halen) and 1989 ("Miss You Much" by Janet Jackson). The last two I understand, because they don't lend themselves to the AC format at all, but "Open Arms" would have been doable, wouldn't it? I mean, come on, did we really have to hear "Truly Madly Deeply" for the umpteenth time, not to mention "Forever And For Always" which fell out of the survey not long ago? Oh well, it's not like we don't hear "Open Arms" every day on Lite Rock and 80s stations, right?
I wonder if they'll have #1s from the 1990s in the near future? Most of the ones from the Pop charts would fit that format, too, since they've all been on the AC chart as well, except for "End Of The Road" by Boyz II Men, but I've heard that played on Lite Rock stations before, so actually, the 1990s would fit even more than the 1980s, since, as mentioned above, one of the years contained a dance/hip-hop song that would be unplayable on AC stations and 1984's top song was a hard rock number that the AT10 affiliates might get a lot of flak for playing. Anyway, we'll have to see what pans out.
The most interesting point on the countdown is the sudden 6-2 move by Michael McDonald's rendition of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell classic "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Of course, this may be a fluke; remember a few weeks back when Josh Groban suddenly recovered 8-4 and then fell back to 8 next week? Something similar might happen to "Mountain" next week, though it may not fall quite as far, but you never know. We'll have to wait and see next week.
Next week or the week after is when we're due for a debut song (as there's usually a new entry near the beginning of the month). What song do you think it'll be? And which song will fall out of the chart to make way for the song? Currently, it looks to be a toss-up between Josh Groban and Lionel Richie, since those songs seem to be flip-flopping near the bottom of the chart. Maybe both of them will fall out the same week and we'll have a rare two-debut chart?
Nah!
