Yeah but AI would have to have a country themed week - and even then, who knows... it's just so disappointing to see them come this close.

^ I feel your pain (even tho I'm thrilled by this fast rotation at #1 we are having: Tik Tok left such a bad taste).
But I think that for Rude Boy, it was this week or never, and most likely will be it's only week at #1.

And LMAO at the song with the cheapest looking video becoming the hit It's obvious that the people still want Rihanna, they just didn't wanted the dark Rihanna PS: I love Rude Boy, btw The video is what really made the song a hit, though.

^ I'm not hating on the video, in fact I find it one of her best.....simple, creative.
I was just pointing to the fact that, they tried so hard for her past 2 singles (with the new hardcore image and all) and failed.... then they went back to Rihanna we all know and love.... and bingo.

Unfortunately, the same goes for Taio Cruz last week. It just sucks that Lady A who worked so hard for it and waited patiently has to be THE ONE who misses out - why couldn't Rihanna have missed out, she's already had a bunch of #1's... or Taio Cruz even? It's always the one act I want to see do so well that has to be the one that misses out.

The video is what really made the song a hit, though. I don't know that I agree with this. The video was released so early on into the song's chart-run (literally, at the beginning) that there's no real way of determining whether or not the video made the song a hit. Personally, I think the song itself was going to be a big hit regardless of the video. It's certainly not a situation where one could say, without the video, the song wouldn't have been successful.

well, looks like b.o.b will get that #2/3 spot next week. Possibly #1. Don't count it out. It's airplay is only a little behind "Rude Boy" at this point, and he's selling more.

I see nothing wrong with that. It's already bigger than several #1's of this year, and at the end that's what matters. Peaks are just about timing, not about being really huge. See 'Crack a Bottle', that one made it to #1 and then quickly faded into oblivion. 'You Belong With Me' only made it to #2 for a week and it was easily bigger than '...Bottle'. Plus, NYN made it to #1 on airplay: Congrats RiRi! I really like that song and it was about time for her to get a new #1 after the so-so start of this era.

It's always the one act I want to see do so well that has to be the one that misses out. Two ways to look at it. On the one hand, Lady A really earned this through a long climb up multiple charts, and unless you count Carrie's Idol coronation song, we haven't had a country #1 since...well, upthread I guessed 1983, and nobody's mentioned one more recent. So, it would be cool to see a country act finally get that recognition. On the other hand, Hot 100 #1s aren't really as important to an act like Lady A as they are to a Rihanna or Taio Cruz, for whom that's about the most important credential they can collect.

If you define "country song" as a song that hit the country chart and was played at country radio, then there were songs more recent than 1983 Lonestar in 2000 is the most recent

Like "Need You Now," Lonestar's "Amazed" peaked at country radio before crossing over to other formats (though country radio still gives NYN a lot of play). Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" looks to be the most recent hit to climb/be near its peak at both the country and non-country formats simultaneously (didn't hit #1 on the Hot 100, just using it as an example of what I mentioned, which is rare).

I believe Love Story peaked at country radio before crossing over to other formats as well, did it not?

Lady Antebellum will just have to comfort themselves with having huge massive sales, almost a guaranteed best selling album of the year, and massive multi-format success (In other words, I think people place too much importance on hot 100 #1s sometimes-sometimes I think the overall success of the artist and cd matter more than snagging one week at #1)

Yeah, people place too much emphasis on the Hot 100 for whatever purposes. Lady Antebellum has a Platinum #1 album and #2 Hot 100 hit, while artists like Jay Sean and Jason Derulo have one week wonder #1 songs and terrible album sales. I think I would rather be in Lady A's position for sure. Besides some of the hits that never hit #1 are either bigger than some of these #1 hits or more memorable. Positions aren't always important.

But there is still huge inter and national prestige in saying you have a Hot 100 #1 hit. Most people who are upset with this are irritated at the lack of variety at the top spot. I find the song kinda generic, but my god - we can't have more than one country song at the top every ten years?!?

We may be attaching more emotion to the Hot 100 chart position of this song than the band themselves likely are

As prestigious as saying you have the #1 album for the fourth week (next week) and currently have the best selling album of the year? I doubt they are losing sleep over that.

I just miss the diversity that the chart had in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's ....

^ Oh me too. I've complained about not enough country and R&B songs topping the charts. I have a feeling that things will change within the few years. I don't see this generic Rhythmic/dance-pop stuff topping the chart for that long.

See, I don't mind the generic r&b stuff topping the chart as long as it is balanced. We're getting there slowly, but it is painfully slow
