SIX-FIGURE TOPPERS COME TO AN END Lady Antebellum Looks to Return to #1, while Verity/JLG’s Marvin Sapp is Top Debut
March 17, 2010
The chart’s run of 100k+ toppers is about to come to an end. With only one release—Verity/JLG’s gospel artist Marvin Sapp—slated for more than 50k, it appears right now that Capitol Nashville’s Lady Antebellum will return to #1 for another week…at least until Island/IDJ’s Justin Bieber arrives next Tuesday (3/23).
Based on one-day sales reports from non-Irish retailers around this great nation of ours, Antebellum looks like it will sell in the 90-95k range for its platinum-plus Need You Now.
Sapp is the week’s biggest debut, outselling the next five challengers combined, with a total looking to be between 70-75k.
Third Man/WB’s White Stripes CD to their DVD documentary, Under Great White Northern Lights, should do around 25-30k.
ATO’s critically acclaimed, veteran Athens, GA, rockers Drive By Truckers make their label debut with The Big To Do, which is currently #6 at iTunes, with a total that should be between 15-18k.
Indie punk-rockers (and Martin Scorsese favorite) Dropkick Murphys celebrate St. Patty’s Day with a 12-15k opening week, while Universal Republic’s Denver rap-rockers Flobots are en route to 10-13k for their sophomore album, Survival Story.
Mercury/IDJ’s touted Utah newcomers Neon Trees are also making some noise in the marketplace.
The market was down 3% vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year and still down 8% year to date.
Now, it’s time to leave it to Bieber.

Good numbers for Lady A. even if they're not getting 100k again :)
Bleh, I really don't like that Bieber kid... but he looks like a lock for #1 next week.

Why are they saying with such certainty that the 6-figure sales for #1 is ending next week? If the one-day projection is 90-95k, it still has a decent chance at going 5k over that in the end, especially with Soundscan's numbers. I definitely hope they manage to scrape the 100k mark for next week.

www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiYOUR DRAB WEAKEND CHART PREVIEW: Lady Antebellum will regain the #1 spot on next week's chart with a total in the 90-95k range, marking the first time this year that the #1 album has sold less than 100k. By contrast, last year at this time, only four #1 albums had crossed that mark (Bruce Springsteen, 224k; The Fray, 179k; U2, 484k; Kelly Clarkson, 255k). Through the first 12 weeks of 2010, the #1 albums will have cumulatively sold 2.45m copies. Last year, for the same period, the #1 albums cumulatively sold 1.75m copies. Now if only the rest of the chart would catch up. Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 90-95k Marvin Sapp (Verity/JLG) 70-75k * Ludacris (DTP/Def Jam/IDJ) 55-60k The Edge (Razor & Tie) 50-55k *(Note: This will be mostly direct-to-consumer sales that we were unaware of yesterday.) Lady Gaga, The Fame (Interscope) 45-50k Sade (Epic) 35-40k Black Eyed Peas (Interscope) 35-40k Gorillaz (Virgin/EMI) 35-40k Jimi Hendrix Experience (Legacy) 30-35k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 30-35k The White Stripes (Third Man/Warner Bros.) 25-30k* Ke$ha (RCA/RMG) 25-30k Gary Allan (MCA Nashville) 20-25k Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster (Interscope) 20-25k Zac Brown Band (Atlantic) 20-25k Lil Wayne (Cash Money/Universal Motown) 20-25k * Denotes debut You may now return to the futile task of trying to pick the upsets in the NCAA Tournament. Marvin Sapp's opening #s are impressive indeed. I think his debut album opened up with 7k first week and went on to sell almost 700k overall. His success is impressive for a gospel artist.

What's up? A boring release schedule or disinterest in album sales?

SuBo needs to do some promotion. Do you all think she has anything planned, or are they just going to let the album slowly die?
