Lead track from the new album from Billboard. I was really surprised out how deep their debut CD was. I've only heard a part of this. I hope they can continue to build on their reputation. Big things heading their way.

are they sending this to alternative?
I don't think this is going to get any play outside of the more indie-leaning stations like WFNX. Shame though, this is a very good song.

I don't like the singer's voice. He sounds like the creepy dude at the bar that everyone laughs at because he thinks he's awesome with the ladies but really he couldn't get laid by the hot girls "ugly friend" they always bring along. Even she has standards.

How do you know what those creepy dudes sound like?

How do you know what those creepy dudes sound like? Because they were usually my friends....or me after way too many drinks.

This song is great, very Arcade Fire-ish, would be shocked if it hit Top 40.

Me too. But I would've said the same about several recent singles.

Allaccess says this is going for adds on April 20
Looks like they were sending this to alternative after all.
I don't remember ever seeing a National song ever being sent for adds, although I remember WFNX played "Mistaken for Strangers" and "Apartment Story" a couple times.

I really like this song; it's a prime National record with the strings and the piano and Berninger's voice remaining as idiosyncratic as ever. It seems like everything just took a turn for the better since Boxer for them; very well-deserved.

Boxer is probably the best CD that nobody else but you and I here have heard. Sadly, I've yet to hear this song aired on radio.

Boxer was a great album. Was in my Top 10 of 2007. Their album before that, Alligator, was also a very good album.

Heard this on the radio yesterday. Hadn't been interested enough to check for it myself, but it's quite good.

Excellent song. I'm hoping this seems some success, but I don't think it will. It sounds more fitting for Triple A.

The National performed Afraid Of Everyone on Late Show this week. Another great song in my opinion. I need to find this CD this weekend.

For some reason Live 105 actually added this, despite never adding anything that's not already Top 10 or 20...maybe 30. Love it.

I've got a couple friends who are really into this band. One of 'em burned me a mix CD of all his favorite stuff of theirs. 18 songs. I must've listened to that thing 6 or 7 times by now, including just last night, while reading along with the lyrics online for the first time. If I don't see what the big deal is by now, I'm pretty sure The National are just not for me.
No memorable melodies, to speak of. The drum patterns are unnecessarily complex, usually. So much so that they're distracting and take away from the song. I've found myself hearing less busy rhythms that would complement the songs so much better, for my taste. There isn't much in the way of compelling instrumentation or sounds other than the occasional somber ambience. Some songs end before I feel they've ever really gone anyplace, just when I'm really ready for them to do so. Other songs go on for too long. It's a struggle to understand what dude is singing half the time because of his monotonous 3-note voice. (Seriously, I tried imitating him and it's as if the corners of his mouth are weighed down. He might as well be a ventriloquist.) And while he does have some clever lines and interesting visuals occasionally, they're not straightforward enough for me to have a good idea what he's talking about.
They're not bad, but I just don't see what the big, critical fuss is about with these guys.

I've tried several times to listen to their stuff but nothing has lasted more than a couple spins.

I was amused that a local radio station had the balls to use this as background music for an advert for a blood drive.
