Eminem's commercial power is undeniable. Even when digital sales look like they're stagnating, his track sells a whopping amount out of nowhere. And this is a clear-cut chart debut, correct? The rack didn't appear on Bubbling Under or anything last week, from what I recall.

I think Eminem has established more than just immense name recognition..........he has branded his career on his exceptional communicative skills with his audience, both in and beyond his music.........and that has made him a viable-than-ever face in a format permeating heavily with also-rans. I don't think "Crack A Bottle" deserved to go #1 as it was just a puerile, second-rate effort to me, but I'm glad this single did. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus |

^Surely you know what that's about, 2m. ;) "I'm Your Angel" did appear on its first Hot 100 chart at #1, but Billboard does not regard it as a Hot 100 debut, as it showed its "last week" position from the test chart in the "last week' column. Which still is somewhat odd, as it cannot disregard positions for all tracks that did appear on the printed Hot 100 the prior week. Nonetheless, debuted at #1, peaked at #1- all the same, in the end.
RE Eminem- his track didn't have any airplay exposure before its release, and it sold almost 100K more in its first week. It probably won't sell as much in the long run, though., unless airplay fares decently.
And, those two "Idol" singles entered at #1 in the digital era. They just didn't do it on the strength of digital sales, but rather physical sales.

Did Kelly Clarkson's 52-1 move with "A Moment Like This" break the previous number one leap record held by the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" or did "I'm Your Angel" officially hold the record? I remember reading both when Clarkson set that benchmark. That December 5, 1998 chart will always be an odd asterisk in chart history books. |

December 5th, 1998 had to be "I'm Your Angel"s debut week since it had not been available as a commercial single until that week. As for "Not Afraid" it will probably go down in history as the song that interrupted "OMG" at #1. That song sold a vary respectable 213,000 copies and is exploding at radio. |

Maybe because IYA appeared in its peak position on the 12/5 chart, whereas something like "Wide Open Spaces" did not? Who knows.

Chart runs included the test charts though |

So, Billboard regards "Wide Open Spaces" as peaking inside the top 40? Maybe it does; of course, the Record Research books only looks at published charts in regards todebu dates, peaks, etc.
