The statement I was responding to was "does the public know or care what goes to #1?"
My answer is that anyone with an interest in reading entertainment articles or websites of an entertainment nature will have an interest since (at least the top 10) these charts are published everywhere.
Articles are written about #1 everywhere.
Now #3 or #17 or whatever, taht is a different matter

Yeah people like us are interested in it, but I doubt people who even watch shows like ET or whatever could say whether an album peaked at #1, #2, or #4. I think the general public has way, way less of specific ideas about sales and chart peaks than we think. I remember one poster on here claimed that "young people" still buy copies of Billboard magazine and then read and discuss them every week. LOL what? Maybe in the 1960s. I teach tons of college students and asked on the final exam who won Album of the Year at the Grammy awards this year and how much have they sold. Exactly 2 people knew Taylor Swift won and not one person was close to her total sales. Sure, all of them could have probably said Taylor Swift was really popular this year, but specifics aren't really something that the general public absorbs.
(The reason why I asked about the AOTY/Taylor thing is my students were begging for extra credit in the class so I did a "general trivia" section of the final exam to give them a break from the normal subject matter. I was honestly surprised at what they could and could not answer at times. No one knew what a Tardis was **weeps**)

Wow, that would be a really strong second week for Carole King and James Taylor given their debut numbers. Only about a 30-40 percent drop. They are playing 3 shows in LA this week. That could have something to do with it. And, they will be on Ellen next week as well.
Good to see B.o.B hold steady after his drop last week. That bodes well.
But yes, just terrible numbers overall. Very depressing.

Wow. 55-65K and #1. That's such a low number for a #1 Billboard 200 album. Would that that the least ever for a #1?

If it falls below 60,000, yes I hope it's able to sell at least 65k. It's a horrible total for a #1 no matter what, but I don't want them to break Dreamgirls ''record'' because it would be a shame. Is something big being released next week? I know Glee Vol.3 will pull more than 80k, so that could be #1 if there's not another big release.

Lady Antebellum Returning To No. 1 On Billboard 200 May 14, 2010 - Retail
by Keith Caulfield, L.A.
As predicted, Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" seems set to return to No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 albums chart, thus earning its fifth non-consecutive week at the top of the tally.
Industry sources suggest that the set may sell only about 57,000 to a little over 60,000 copies by week's end on Sunday, May 16. The last time we saw the top-selling album of the week sell less than 70,000 was back in January of 2009 when Taylor Swift's "Fearless" strung together three sub-70,000 frames.
If, however, Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" hits No. 1 next week with less than 60,000, it will mark the lowest-ever sales week at the top of the Billboard 200 since Nielsen SoundScan began powering the chart with its sales data in May of 1991.
Currently, the lowest sales week for a No. 1 album occurred when the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack spent its second and final week at the top in January of 2007, selling a handful of copies over 60,000.
But, with the weekend still in play, anything is possible. The final numbers for this sales week until next Wednesday morning (May 19).
The coming weeks will bring the Billboard 200 some hopefully-big albums. On May 18 comes the "Glee: Showstoppers" set and then on May 25 we'll see the arrival of the "Sex and the City 2" soundtrack and the new Stone Temple Pilots album.
After that, new studio albums are due from Jack Johnson (June 1), Christina Aguilera and Dierks Bentley (June 8), Sarah McLachlan, Young Jeezy and Drake (June 15), Miley Cyrus and Eminem (June 22) and the Game, Rick Ross and a Jay-Z hits compilation (June 29).

Well, that's good news for someone:
Christina does have a chance to get a #1 album. Even if she does around 85k, she should be a contender for top 3.

Lol@ thinking the general public can state the peaks of albums on charts. I agree, I never see Billboard charts published on the internet of any other media. People read entertainment/gossip sites, but I rarely see chart stats mentioned on either, and if they are they're usually misrepresented.

Wonderful for the National - brilliant album. If they had to be at #2, I'd rather it have been behind Lady Antebellum. :( Twitter is no longer safe because of that #1. >:(

Charice also sold better than projected - good for her. Highest Asian singer on the album charts I think!

Not as high as they projected for Carole King and James Taylor, but still, they had less than a 50% drop, even with Mother's Day in the clear for this week.

IRON MAN 2 soundtrack is holding incredibly well. But I guess it makes sense since it passes as an AC/DC greatest hits album after all.

Well, horrible week for sales. Is Bieber the new lowest #1? Dreamgirls sold *just* over 60k for the lowest recorded sales week for a #1, so as long as Bieber sells as much or more as his HDD total, the record is unbroken.
