There is the speculation that based on what we know about Joel Whitburn's non-Billboard point system, that I Gotta Feeling has or will surpass We Belong Together in popularity

"I Gotta Feeling" has performed better than "We Belong Together" on the week-to-week basis- it's rather simple.

Again, it's Billboard's system, not Joel/Record Research- although via that system, "Feeling" also has more points, as it's endured on the Hot 100 longer than 'Together."

And, it doesn't matter if a track is declared SONG OF THE DECADE- we're talking about all-time lists, and if we're talking about tracks peaking within a certain era, all of IGF's points from 2010 would be applied to its status as a 2009 track. WBT did have the most points for the period used to cover the decade Hot 100 chart list (December 1999-November 2009)- that is not in dispute.

And, the two "Glee" gaga tracks debut a week early. The rare feat of "Glee" tracks advancing after debuting (I think it may have happened once or twice before- i.e. "Defying Gravity"?)

Doogie Howser has his first Hot 100 entry.

With no "Idol" performance, "I'm Everyone But Myself Tonight" has little to no shot at outdoing its original No. 23 peak.

How do you know Billboard's point system? Did someone from Billboard e-mail to you? Can you send me a copy?

The one they have been using in all-time charts recently gives different weights to songs released in earlier/different periods. Have you accounted for this? For example 2005-2006 digital sales can not be compared one to one with 2010 digital sales (different market)

Yes, in a strictly chart-run based Joel Whitburn/non-Billboard point system, the two chart runs are comparable but, doubt you will see any declaration from Billboard that one is "more popular" than the other.

How many times has a cover of a currently charting song appeared on the Hot 100? "Bad Romance" is on twice thanks to Glee.

I know it has happened before (probably even within the Glee repertoire), but I can only think of a couple.

I believe Kid Rock's "All Summer Long" had a cover version simultaneously, and perhaps some Idol tracks co-charted. ("Inside Your Heaven"? Although they may have debuted simultaneously, so it's not really the case that one was a cover of the other.)

The week Celine Dion dropped from 1 to 2 with her Titanic smash, dance act Déjà Vu debuted at number 78 with their version of "My Heart Will Go On."

Then there was "Macarena." The original Spanish version was moving up to its peak of number 23 when its cover by the same act, Los Del Río, was holding at number 1. Although the Spanish version was the original recording, the reworked bilingual version was the first to debut on the Hot 100, so I guess this is a very strange case in which the cover debuts first than the original, but then people become interested in the latter and both titles chat simultaneously.

Last in my list is another case similar to the one you mentioned, "Inside Your Heaven." In June of 1997, LeAnn Rimes debuted at number 89 with "How Do I Live." Two spots below, Trisha Yearwood entered the chart with her version of the song. LeAnn won on the Hot 100 and sold the most copies, but Trisha beat her in the country charts (and the Grammys).

IGF vs WBT is so useless. You can't compare IGF with a classic. WBT will be definitely remembered more than IGF although IGF has better chart run.

It is quite possible, given that they weight songs from different time periods differently, that We Belong Together will still rank higher on the next all-time list, regardless of how many weeks I Gotta Feeling spends between #35 and #50

Five new Glee songs; I’m impressed that the 2 Gaga songs debuted before anyone saw them onscreen. Dream On is the 4th-highest Glee charter. 13 T40’s, though Poker Face should join and maybe Bad Romance. Most of them have been in the back 9 episodes.

9 of the T40's have Lea on lead. And Broadway stars Matthew Morrison, Idina Menzel, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jonathan Groff now each have T40's under their belts.

Billboard did not weigh any years in the digital era differently than others, because the all-time list does not rank tracks' by their cumulative points on each week's chart- just by week-to-week rankings. If they were adding up the points a track had for each week on the Hot 100, then I could see weighing eras differently. But keep in mind that Billboard reduced the sales divider once digital sales started increasing big time, so it addressed that in another way.

The only reason Billboard now weighs other eras differently is that the the use of BDS/SoundScan resulted in much lengthier overall chart runs for tracks than the previous Hot 100 methodology, thanks to more precise tracking.

Anyhow, "Bulletproof" is faring well- but it may end up being a one-hit-wonder type of deal.

^It's been doing nicely at Adult Top 40. The bottom of the Hot 100 usually sees 2,000+ points- depends on the week.

BTW- for those interested- just to show I am not blowing smoke out of my arse, I inquired with Billboard and received conformation that "I Gotta Feeling" would come in as the highest-ranking track of the BDs/SoundScan era on an all-time list if it were published now. Also that tracks from 1991-present are weighted the same, for the reasons I stated.

Would you say it is a reasonable comparison to compare sales of We Belong Together equally with I Gotta Feeling.

We Belong Together sold 1 million and I Gotta Feeling sold 5 million, therefore I Gotta Feeling must be more popular?

This would require a different weighting anyway because of this.

I am not saying you are wrong, but just saying why would that last week at #41 or whatever make this song more popular than the other, so it is a bigger overall hit this week, when it wasn't last week?


Airplay and sales environments between two completely different time periods would require different weights for actual popularity which is why the annual ranking system they use did not apply to the decade system.


Shifts in market come into play here I think.

2m, it's not like comparing pre-BS/-SoundScan-era tracks; tracks from 2005-present chart under the same methodology. Two completrely different environments is why Billboard now weighs pre-BDS/-SoundSca-era tracks differently than those before it. Like I said, when digital sales were added to the mix, Billboard divided the sales by 5. When digital sales exploded, it went back to 10 as the sales divider, to address that difference. That helped take care of any market "shift." It's like any other time a new format rose to prominence- it takes time to reach a particular sales level. When singles sales started declining in the 80s, before cassingles took off- should Billboard weigh certain years from that decade differently? Of course not.

The big chart change came in late 1991, and every track since then receives the same weighting- and I imagine that's how it will remain, unless even stronger tracking technology hits.

In any event, for those wanting to dismiss "I Gotta Feeling," I wouldn't count on it disappearing from the airwaves, even after it ends its run. Not that it's one of the greatest tracks of all time (same goes for "We Belong Together," which gets strong recurrent play), but "Macarena," it ain't. :)
