2m, it's not like comparing pre-BS/-SoundScan-era tracks; tracks from 2005-present chart under the same methodology. Two completrely different environments is why Billboard now weighs pre-BDS/-SoundSca-era tracks differently than those before it. Like I said, when digital sales were added to the mix, Billboard divided the sales by 5. When digital sales exploded, it went back to 10 as the sales divider, to address that difference. That helped take care of any market "shift." It's like any other time a new format rose to prominence- it takes time to reach a particular sales level. When singles sales started declining in the 80s, before cassingles took off- should Billboard weigh certain years from that decade differently? Of course not. The big chart change came in late 1991, and every track since then receives the same weighting- and I imagine that's how it will remain, unless even stronger tracking technology hits. In any event, for those wanting to dismiss "I Gotta Feeling," I wouldn't count on it disappearing from the airwaves, even after it ends its run. Not that it's one of the greatest tracks of all time (same goes for "We Belong Together," which gets strong recurrent play), but "Macarena," it ain't. :) I stayed out of this argument for a while, but I think 2m makes some good points. Compared to five years ago, the digital era was a shell of what it was today. Back when WBT was popular, it wasn't common for the #1 digital song of the week to even come close to cracking 100k in sales in a week, but even when sales exploded to where they are today, Billboard still weighs them equally to how they did 5 years ago, when we routinely have popular songs sell upwards of 200k in a given week. So, IGF will probably end up earning more chart points because it has benefited from the explosion of sales. (Meaning it sells more copies per week, therefore it stays on the chart longer). Now, to its credit, it has to be a very popular song to be able to sell that consistently well, but 5 years ago, Mariah didn't have that advantage when airplay constituted a greater percentage of your overall chart points. Once programmers took WBT out of rotation and made it recurrent, naturally, WBT fell off the chart. Today, it could've been similar to the chart run that IGF has had. Who knows? And IGF isn't the only song to benefit from this. So has "I'm Yours," which now has the longevity record. But are we going to say that another song deserves the longevity record and this one doesn't because of what era it became popular in? No, we're not. It's just different and it's pointless to try and say one song is more popular than the other, or that one song is the "Song of the Decade" and the other isn't, because we just don't know. Back to the Hot 100 this week. I don't know if anybody has look at iTunes recently, but Katy Perry has had a surge in sales and has leapt ahead of Usher and B.o.B on iTunes. She could be back at #2 next week, possibly #1. We'll see how much she sells.

Is "We Belong Together" currently on the Hot 100?
Didn't think so.
It's fine to note when a currently-charting song achieves some sort of record or other accomplishment (as long as said achievement can be confirmed), but this is not the place to debate methodologies of compiling all-time lists.
Carry on.
EDIT: And anyone who's outright ignored other in-thread notes I've left for infractions in the past without actually making an issue of it needn't expect leniency yet again.

Alicia Keys ties her highest Hot 100 peak for this era. TSWABH & U(IR) both at #27, although U(IR) should continue going up.

Heh, Mediatraffic says this week the #1 song in the world is Monster.
But not, y'know, the Gaga one.

Had a PM about this post which makes me realize I was misleading in what I was saying, so I'm clarifying: I don't mind the actual discussion about how different charts are compiled and the unbiased discussion of one methodology's advantage over another. What I don't want to see are the posts to the degree of "All-time lists that use Criteria X are stupid because I want Song Y to be number one, not Song Z, and Song Z would displace Song Y is you looked at it that way." My edit was referencing a different issue entirely, and I probably should have separated the two thoughts better. Sorry for any confusion.

It's pretty amazing to see Michael Buble still on there. That song has been on the charts for 34 weeks and has just reached a new peak of #24. How odd is that? Could this be some sort of record for the latest a song has achieved its peak position in a chart run?

I posted this in the "Alejandro" thread, but I think I'd get a better answer here.. I was looking at Billboard.com and this is what it has for her "Weeks On" LoveGame: 42 weeks Paparazzi: 27 weeks Telephone: 26 weeks* Bad Romance: 25 weeks* Just Dance: 24 weeks Alejandro: 8 weeks* *Still charting Poker Face was messed up. It said it only charted for 4 weeks. LOL! And I'm really wondering if they messed up and put some of its weeks with LoveGame. Did LG really chart for 42 weeks? lol OH and how has Telephone been on longer than Bad Romance? Someone needs to send a message to Billboard. LOL!

Are these for the Hot 100? Here are the numbers for the Hot 100: Just Dance: 49 weeks Poker Face: 40 weeks LoveGame: 22 weeks Paparazzi: 27 weeks Bad Romance: 30 weeks Telephone: 26 weeks Alejandro: 8 weeks acharts.us/performer/lady_gagaBillboard's "new" site is broken and, after 1 (?) year, I have no faith they'll ever fix it.

Too bad billboard doesn't factor in how well a song sells an album into their singles chart data. WBT returned TEOM to #1 on the album charts and single handedly helped the album sell around 3 million copies during the summer before the re-release.

How would you even begin to factor in something like that? That popularity is represented on the album chart. Otherwise Thriller would have produced 7 number one singles.

It's not that difficult a concept, a song that can sell an album like WBT is highly indicative of how popular a song is with listeners and IMO makes a bigger impact than a song that just sells singles.

I see your point, and I too have thought it would be a cool idea, but how would they even integrate it into their point system? The only thing I've thought of is that maybe they'd look at each of the songs from the album and see how its doing in airplay, and split the sales up from that week accordingly. Like, if the artist had 2 tracks getting airplay, and 1 had like 50 mill AI and the other had 25 mill AI, then for each 1 copy of the album sold, song A would have 2/3 of the "sale" go its points and song B would have 1/3. Cause in all reality, you can't just have the album sales go towards the bigger hit since some people do buy albums based on the previous ones as well. So, lets say that this album sold 50,000 copies that week. That would mean song A just got 33,333 points added to its total and song B got 16,667 points added to its total. But even this "system" would probably still not work that well.

I guess at the end of the day there is no full proof way to really gauge how much of an impact a song has (at least chart wise). I just have a hard time swallowing that Billboard considers IGF a bigger smash than WBT. Everyone that was around in '05 knows what an undeniable smash WBT was (at least in the US, IGF shitted all over WBT globally).

I think that you mistook Bey's album sales for Rihanna's because Rihanna is only 1 million ahead, and lugus said that GaGa would surpass her not them both

I somehow thought lugus meant Bey. Yeah Gaga will surpass Rih provided Rih doesn't release some smash album in the next 12 months which I doubt she will.
