I'm praying Tony recorded a track with Donna Summer for the upcoming "Magic" compilation. Ultra Nate, Jennifer Holiday and Deborah Cooper are all fantastic, but ain't none of 'em can sing like Ms. Summer.

tony has several unused donna summer songs-"valley of the moon" being the most famous. i do not think any of them will ever be officially released. Donna Summer has a bunch of unreleased (and for the most part, unheard) tracks with Junior Vasquez as well. I think the most notorious unreleased Donna song with Junior is called "My Life." It's a shame he and Tony can't find a way either to release these tracks or use them on a compilation (legally, of course).

what era are the donna summer/jr tracks? I think they might be Sound Factory and Arena tracks, but that's just a guess.

Donna performed "My Life" during her VH1 Live & More Encore special back in 1999. It's presumably based on the original version. As far as I know, the original studio version has never leaked or been released (if such a thing exists, it may be in a vault somewhere). This is an edit of the performance from that special. I think this is as close to a studio version as we're going to get. Her vocals are totally spot on and could easily pass as a studio recording. what era are the donna summer/jr tracks? I think they might be Sound Factory and Arena tracks, but that's just a guess. I had read something about the Junior mix of "My Life" possibly being done during either Arena or Twilo at the last incarnation of the board (around 2006). He supposedly played the mix during his Black Party set last year. I did get a recording of the set, but it seems that particular part of the mix was not included or he didn't play it and it was just a rumor. That mix is high on my holy grail remixes list.

It's not part of the set that was publicly distributed.

@disco Cowboy- Thanks. I have the VH1 DVD and didn't realize this song was on it. Her vocals are magnificent- you're right.

Thanks, Joey, for the names of the 2 unreleased Donna/Tony tracks. I'm wondering if you ever contacted Tony's manager or asked him in the DJ booth if he plans on releasing them or if you've ever heard them while at a circuit event? I haven't...would love to get a copy.

The version that was sold on the Star 69 website has mysteriously disappeared and there is no mention of it on the site anymore. ??? I wonder if the three versions Digimark mentioned at the other board are based on the one that was in the YouTube video.

I think this song would have been so much better had Tony used a different vocalist. While Ultra's vocals have their place in dance music (such as the upbeat "Free" and "Love's the Only Drug"), her vocal range is limited. In my opinion, Destination, which I've listened to over and over at the gym (and at a couple of circuit events in the past 3 months), would have been much more enjoyable with a diversified, bigger-ranged dance vocalist like Debby Holiday or Deborah Cox or Kristine W or Wynter Gordon, etc. Ultra's take just doesn't seem to resonate emotionally; it's Tony''s strong production that makes the song enjoyable. For example, when he uses the vocoder (or whatever software) to manipulate her voice during the chorus when she's singing" Whyyyyy....can't we make it go beyond tomorrow. Tell me why...whyyyyy." If you listen carefully, her vocals are strained and a little flat. And the use of that vocal manipulation seems to be trying to cover the lack of vocal quality when she attempts to belt out. ehhh. And if there's no vocal manipulation, maybe her voice just naturally sounds that raspy and robotic? I'm hoping he gets the vocals re-sung like he did with Danielle Bollinger's strong (for Danielle) but ultimately lackluster take on "Surrender Me."
As much as I appreciate and admire Moran's music, I've noticed this is the second time in a row he's chosen a singer who used a limited range in one of his vocal anthems (vocal is the key word here!). The last was "You Are." While Frenchie's vocal performance was smooth and technically sound, it was lacking. It stayed safe predominantly within her middle register, which is less than enticing when you're out on the dance floor. "You Are" was a blip on the radar screen (here and then gone quickly), and I'm assuming some noticed that it under-performed. I believe mainly because Frenchie's name attached was initially exciting to dance music lovers, then after a couple of listens, the vocals were just not top notch. The song just didn't go anywhere vocally or resonate. I often thought how different this track would have been with Leona Lewis singing the vocals.
I hope this middle of the road vocal delivery is not a trend on his new compilation "Magic." I'm not generalizing Frenchie or Ultra as unprofessional singers: I enjoy both of them and support them by purchasing their products. I find that on both of these specific tracks their vocals are not necessarily flattering or contributing to the overall emotional delivery of the song or its story. And perhaps it could be the material in which they're working.
But Ultra is not known for her vocal prowess, and Moran IS known for his vocal anthems. So why would he pick such a vocalist to generate (or re-generate) excitement for his now almost one year delayed project "Magic"? It seems counter-intuitive. It's important for him to use different talent to constantly grow in the musical canopy. But please make sure they deliver the vocals for us to dance to! That's why we're here- to dance (i.e., dance music). With a vocal anthem, again with vocal being the key word, tribal thumping beats are not enough. We need our lyrics ,which Moran delivers. And more importantly, we enjoy a hot vocal delivery--and maybe someone who still has an upper register to hit the pretty notes.
Tony Moran is one of the few dance music producers in the U.S. gay community that consistently releases high quality vocal anthems and beautiful remixes to dance diva's tracks. Please don't get mired in mediocrity. Pick the talent that will deliver to your fan base. Two words- Donna Summer. I hope this massive, unexplained delay on "Magic" is because Tony's secured Donna for a track, and they're finishing it. That would be cause like no other to dance and sing all about. Then a dance music compilation targeted to the circuit crowd may actually breach the 1000 sales threshold! Wouldn't that be wonderful for us all :)

Oh well they are number one in my heart and provide the soundtrack to mY life Well said. It is strange the way certain song that seem like immediate #1's (Kimberley Locke's "Strobelight") don't make it there while others do. Just keep on supporting the music that "does it" for ya. As for "Destination," I'm not really wild about it. I think this is sort of mediocrity for both Tony and Ultra Nate, but hey, there's a place for it.

While Ultra's vocals have their place in dance music (such as the upbeat "Free" and "Love's the Only Drug"), her vocal range is limited. To some extent I agree with that. I appreciate that she utilizes what she has as well as she can. While I do love my big-voiced singers like both Deborah's and Jennifer's, Donna, Martha, Debby, Jocelyn, etc, I enjoy some who show some restraint as well. Ultra did showcase more of her vocal abilities on some of her earlier work during the 90's. "How Long" is a good example of that (I would have posted a link to the Farley & Heller one but it seems to have vanished from YouTube). The remixes were really good. I have always liked her music because of her lyrics and her delivery of them versus what kind of high notes she can hit. Regardless, I find her voice to be pleasant.
