Cancelled Tours Suggest Brutal Summer For Touring ActsCancelled shows and tours by usually reliable marquee artists like Christina Aguilera, the Eagles, U2 (due to Bono's back surgery), Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair, Rhianna, John Mayer, Limp Bizkit, and the Go-Go's seem to belie the fact that the live music business is taking a beating this summer. Multi-act festivals like Bamboozle and the Country Throwdown Tour pulled the plug on some dates, while other tours by what were considered hot acts are experiencing slumping sales, among them Jonas Brothers and Kings Of Leon, according to sources. Rumblings of a tough year for touring began a couple of months ago, with predictions ranging from "mediocre" to "bloodbath." Two main culprits may be at fault in what is shaping up as possibly the worst summer for touring since the mid 1990s: ticket prices and traffic. At the center of the storm is Live Nation, which controls the majority of summer touring, particularly at the amphitheater level. Ticket prices have been a thorn in the industry's side for years, and ticket prices are a direct function of how much the act is being paid. Live Nation's detractors say the company pays artists unreasonably high guarantees in order to gain market share and keep its amphitheaters programmed and tap into ancillary revenues like concessions, sponsorships and parking. When an estimated 70% of touring traffic occurs during the warm months, ticket prices become more sensitive, as fans are forced to make choices as to which shows they will see. Another issue created by traffic is heavy schedules make it tougher for each show to get the kind of promotional attention necessary, whether it comes from the promoter's own efforts or media coverage. Also coming into play is the fact that many if not most Live Nation shed tours are negotiated and booked out of the company's West Coast offices, without a lot of local input about which shows are programmed and how much an act is worth in a given market. An act that's worth $250,000 in Boston may be worth only $50,000 in Cleveland, which should be reflected in local ticket prices. Another factor cited by insiders is ill-advised touring by artists who either don't have a new album or single out, or have made the rounds too many years in a row. Without a compelling reason to go see an act, whether it's absence from the marketplace or a hot album or single, fans may be deciding to sit this one out. Finally, there seems to be a level of skepticism from consumers toward the concert industry, much of it relating to numerous ticket add-on fees or high ticket and concession prices in general. There are live music successes. Coachella, Stagecoach, Jazzfest and Bonnaroo all have done quite well. Tours by acts like Lady GaGa, James Taylor/Carole King, and Roger Waters are performing solidly under Live Nation, as is its entire country roster of tours. AEG's Justin Bieber, Black Eyed Peas, Taylor Swift and Bon Jovi, are also doing sellout business. www.billboard.com/events#/news/cancelled-tours-suggest-brutal-summer-for-1004098666.story

I wish Tool played a couple shows in Michigan on this tour there going on but they are practically skipping the Midwest for the 2nd straight year.
I'm going to the Eminem concert in Detroit but I would be going to more if more people toured michigan more often.

Wait, Lilith Fair got canceled? I don't think so. They said shows and tours had been canceled. I haven't heard of Lilith Fair being canceled so they may mean one or a few shows originally slated in were canceled but not the whole event. Ok, they are exaggerating this a little, right? Possibly although it does seem clear tours have been struggling this year. LiveNation didn't lift their fee for a month just to improve their image with consumers. It was a business decision that imo would not have been made if sales hadn't been slower then normal.

Regarding Lilith Fair, I had read some things about how its ticket sales had been surprisingly low. Certain articles alluded to how it may end up getting canceled.

One great band who always does well year after year is Hanson. They literally tour round the clock, headline small venues like the House of Blues and sell them out, and put on this great, intimate show. Nothing fancy, just great music. They'll do 35 shows, then do several more in the cities they missed.

Ticket prices are the main issue for me. I mentioned this in the American Idol tour thread. I have to really love a performer to spend over $50 on a ticket. So when these bands show up and they want $40+ for the worst seats, $80-100 for good ones, plus insane fees from Ticketmaster and the facility, hell no.
I spent $57 a ticket for great Maroon 5 seats, which I thought was reasonable. I'm also going to see OneRepublic/Sara Bareilles and The Script, whose tickets were $25 each. Now that's more like it.

Seems like they're are inflating this for a story. The recession of course has taken a toll on everything, but look how many artists are still selling out shows.

^^ Add Carrie Underwood to that list. She's having an uber-successful summer. :) Let's not overstate Carrie's success. She might be selling out some 8-10,000 seat arenas but she's also had problems selling out 7000 seat arenas. Carrie's doing OK only.Nothing compared to country acts like Strait,Chesney,Paisley and Flatts--now that's uber-sucessful touring numbers.

Carrie is doing quite well actually. Of course she is not at Kenny or George Strait's level yet, as she is just starting out as a major headlining act. But she is also playing twice as many dates as George Strait, Brad, or the Flatts... so in the end, she will do pretty great.

For being a female country act Carrie is doing very well. She's not selling like Chesney and Paisley would but they've also been putting out hits longer

Wait, Lilith Fair got canceled? The only show that was canceled was the Phoenix show, and that was more in protest with SB 1070. I wish Tool played a couple shows in Michigan on this tour there going on but they are practically skipping the Midwest for the 2nd straight year. I hear ya, especially with the new setlist they're doing. Oh well, whenever they put out a new album I'm sure they won't skip us again.

The A.R. Rahman world tour has just been postponed indefinitely (he did the Slumdog Millionaire soundtracK). His tour was about to begin its U.S. leg this past weekend but because of a major accident which destroyed some of the stage and set, they cannot continue at this point. The show had elaborate aerial and acrobatic acts in addition to the singing and they didn't want to compromise that integrity of the show. Wait, Lilith Fair got canceled? The only show that was canceled was the Phoenix show, and that was more in protest with SB 1070. There have been other artists' shows which have canceled in that particular place too for the same reasons.

Further proof that the 2010 summer concert season is taking a beating came late Thursday afternoon when the Nettwerk Music Group announced the cancellation of 10 upcoming Lilith concerts in North America. The cancellations include previously scheduled concerts at Usana Amphitheater in Salt Lake City (July 12); Bell Centre in Montreal (July 23); Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion in Raleigh, N.C. (Aug. 4); Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Charlotte, N.C. (Aug. 6); Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Fla. (Aug. 10); 1-800 Ask-Gary Amphitheatre in Tampa, Fla. (Aug. 11); Verizon Wireless Center Birmingham in Pelham, Ala. (Aug. 12); Austin, Texas (Aug. 14); the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in the Woodlands, Texas (Aug. 15); and Superpages.com Center in Dallas (Aug. 16). Refunds for the canceled dates are available at points of purchase, according to the news release. Some of the artists who were set to appear at the canceled Lilith shows may appear on other dates. Further information can be found at Lilith.com. "We are in the midst of one of the most challenging summer concert seasons with many tours being cancelled outright," Lilith co-founder Terry McBride said in a statement. "Everyone involved with the tour would like to apologize to the fans and artists scheduled to play in these markets, and express appreciation for all the support for the festival's return. Lilith remains the only tour of its kind, and we are confident that fans will be amazed by what each date has to offer." Lilith organizers previously canceled concerts set for Phoenix and Nashville. After more than a decade, the revamped Lilith tour launched June 27, with a lineup including Sugarland, Erykah Badu, Sheryl Crow, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Colbie Caillat and Sarah McLachlan. The trek is scheduled to conclude Aug. 8 at the Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood in Atlanta. Live Nation is producing the majority of the Lilith dates. As previously reported, a number of other artists are experiencing canceled or postponed concert dates, including U2 (due to Bono's back surgery), Christina Aguilera, Lilith Fair, Limp Bizkit, the Eagles, Country Throwdown, Rihanna, Bamboozle and the Go-Go's. Rumblings of a tough year for touring began a couple of months ago, with predictions ranging from "mediocre" to "bloodbath." Ticket prices have been terrible here in Charlotte! For alot of shows they have doubled what they were last year and yes they are all at Livenation's Verizon Ampitheater! Shows at other Charlotte venues have had good prices but almost all shows going to Livenation's are only selling half the seats or even less and thats cause their prices are outrageous! For example, last year the Jonas Brothers came to our downtown arena and top prices even up at the stage were only peaking around $80. They sold out in 30 minutes over 20000 seats. This year they are playing the Verizon Ampitheater and seats in the front 3 sections are $250 and the back 3 sections $95 with even the back and grass seats $67. It has been on sale over 2 months and they have only sold maybe 8000 of 18000 seats if you look at the seat map on Livenations site. I mean last year a front frow seat at the arena $80 compared to $250 at Livenations Amitheater this year. This exact same senerio is happening to the American Idol tour here too. Livenation is bringing down touring artists by overcharging fans and killing their ticket sales. That company needs to go!

Here's another report, although it's of no surprise really: news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100707/ap_en_tv/us_american_idol_tour;_ylt=ApCHZ3S3QoDyCz35on25kIZxFb8C;_ylu=X3oDMTJxcTdhOWRoBGFzc2V0A2FwLzIwMTAwNzA3L3VzX2FtZXJpY2FuX2lkb2xfdG91cgRwb3MDNwRzZWMDeW5fYXJ0aWNsZV9zdW1tYXJ5X2xpc3QEc2xrA2lkb2x0b2VuZHN1bQ--'Idol' to end summer tour early; 8 shows canceledLOS ANGELES – The summer tour starring "American Idol" finalists is being cut short. Eight shows on the American Idol Live! Tour have been canceled while others have been changed, according to a revised schedule released Tuesday by tour organizer Live Nation. The tour featuring the ninth season's top 10 singers was originally planned to end Sept. 16 in Portland, Maine, but is now scheduled to stop on Aug. 31 in Indianapolis. Live Nation spokeswoman Liz Morentin confirmed the changes but declined to comment on the reason behind the move. The canceled stops include Portland, Ore.; Omaha, Neb.; Kansas City, Mo.; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Toronto; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Cleveland. Shows have been moved up in cities such as Des Moines, Iowa; Minneapolis; Chicago; and Toledo, Ohio. The Fox singing contest, which has long been TV's top-rated series, faced falling viewership during its ninth season and at times was bested by ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" in the ratings. A total of 24.2 million viewers watched the final duel between Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, compared to the nearly 29 million viewers who saw Kris Allen win over Adam Lambert last year.

Pollstar reports concert tour revenue downnew.music.yahoo.com/various-artists...-down--62002992AP, Jul 8, 2010 8:00 pm PDT The recession has finally caught up with the lucrative concert touring industry. The industry trade magazine and website Pollstar says gross revenue for the top 100 tours in North America in the first six months of 2010 is down nearly $200 million from last year. That's a 17 percent drop in an industry that seemed impervious to the weakening economy just a few years ago. The total haul of $965.5 million was the lowest for the first half of the year since 2005 when gross revenue was $730.9 million. Ticket sales also were off. The top 100 acts sold an average of 6,951 tickets per show, down about 9 percent from 7,639 during the same period in 2009. Declining ticket sales have been evident in the number of cancellations this year for usually bankable stars. Major acts such as The Eagles, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and the Lilith Fair have canceled or curtailed tours, but Pollstar editor in chief Gary Bongiovanni said others — including Lady GaGa, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Muse — aren't having problems moving tickets. To compensate, promoters have been offering discounted tickets, which some say has created more problems for the industry. The top-grossing show this year was Coachella. The California festival drew 225,000 fans who paid more than $21.7 million for tickets. Bon Jovi has the top North American tour in the first half of 2010 with $52.8 million in grosses. James Taylor and Carole King are next at $41 million and Swift is third with $34.2 million. The tours of Paul McCartney ($31.6 million) and George Strait ($29.8 million) round out the top five. AC/DC rules ticket sales worldwide with 1.8 million. No other act has reached 1 million. The band has grossed $177.5 million. Bongiovanni says the recession appears to be hitting larger shows the hardest, with club-level acts still seeing respectable ticket sales. ___ Online: www.pollstar.com
