Oh wow, I didn't know it hit #5, how did I miss that. I thought it stalled at #6, that's cool! Now I'm not so upset that her airplay is on the decline, top 5 on the Hot 100 was better than what I thought "Alejandro" would ever achieve. There were some calculation errors and the Hot 100 was updated on Friday. That shifted "Alejandro" to #5 instead of #6, and pushed Ke$ha down to #6. Check last week's hot 100 thread, there were a few changes (but the "Alejandro" switch was probably the biggest, since that placed it in the top 5).

Wow thanks for the info! I didn't realize there were last minute changes, I thought for a minute l had lost my mind coz I certainly would have remembered GaGa hitting #5! Do you know what the miscalculations were?? This doesn't happen very often...?

The miscalculations don't happen very often. If memory serves this is only the second time it has happened and the changes are always minimal. This is the trouble with the internet age of instant chart info released to the public versus the age of printed charts.

Lowest peaking in sales, airplay, Pop radio... Hot 100 peaks are just a part of the song's success. Paparazzi was bigger than LoveGame and Alejandro, despite the lower peak. Alejandro has a higher spin-peak than LoveGame on Pop radio so just because there are 4 other massive singles on the radio right now blocking it from achieving a higher chart position doesn't mean Alejandro was spun any less than LoveGame. In fact it's been spun much more. Sales remain to be seen. Alej needs about 1m more to surpass LG. Alej > LG (even at this point) But didn't LG stay on the charts longer before starting to lose airplay?

Yep, also LG topped the Pop chart with less stations, so of course it had less spins.

The fact that If We Ever Meet Again struggled to even go top 40 on the Hot 100 makes me feel frustrated. It's as radio friendly as a song can get, plus it featured Katy Perry... it had everything to be a hit, but seems that minus the Justin collabos, Timbaland isn't getting any airplay soon. Is it the final single? Looks like it.
Drake is doing great! Might get close to #1 on the Hot 100 if the airplay keeps growing.

Did they change the Hot 100 formula this year, or the formula for the R&B chart? Because when Trey Songz's "I invented sex" went to #1 on the R&B chart but didn't crack the Top 40 on the Hot 100, it was the first R&B song to do that in 18 years. Since then, a three more R&B songs have done that ("It Kills Me" by Melanie Fiona, "Sex Therapy" by Robin Thicke, and "Everything to Me" by Monica).

^ No, it's just that digital sales are stronger than airplay right now and R&B hits don't generate many downloads, so they are more radio-driven.

Hey I agree with "If We Ever Meet Again". I really liked the song and I thought it was catchy. I have no idea why radio let it flop. It seemed to have steady digital sales (usually stuck in the mid-20's) and if radio had given it exposure, the song would have been fairly big. It was a top 10 hit in the UK and Australia, I have no idea why US radio passed on it? It was as pop-friendly as you could get, yet radio would rather spin the same Usher, BOB, Rihanna and BEP tracks endlessly? And you wonder why mainstream top 40 in the US is stale... It's like they won't play it if it wont cross over to urban. Look how long it took for Lady Antebellum and Train to go top 10 in airplay.. They literally had to have two months of 200k+ digital sales before radio gave them steam... Meanwhile trash like Rude Boy and OMG were flogged by radio right out of the gate. It's an unfair and BS system if you ask me.

Hot R&B /Hip-Hop chart is not really sales driven anymore (It is, but there are no real physical sales anymore and it doesn't employ digital info yet). It is a mix of mainstream & adult r&b radio.
So when rhythmic started playing more 'pop' fare (Gaga, Kesha) and the Hot 100 started relying on high digital sales, big r&b hits (that didn't cross over to CHR) have gotten kind of lost on the Hot 100. Rap still performs pretty well.

Does anyone know why digital sales aren't factored into the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts? It makes no sense to me.

Does anyone know why digital sales aren't factored into the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts? It makes no sense to me. Because when Billboard counted sales towards that chart there was a panel of R&B/Hip-Hop stores that carried CD singles for that genre. That way it was easy for Billboard to track sales that Urban/UAC radio airplay generated. With iTunes and other digital retailers, Billboard can't do that and the chart would be filled with faux Rap-Pop crossovers that don't represent what Urban radio plays. Plus, tracks are often given a wrong genre on iTunes, so they can't even go by that. Most R&B songs and album are labelled as "Pop" on iTunes, for example.

The R&B Hip Hop Songs chart has traditionally been in place to track the musical tastes of the Black community. It was easy to do with retail stores selling singles in African American communities, etc. Now they don't know WHO is purchasing Alicia Keys or Snoop Dogg digital singles on iTunes....
