Michael Jackson Album Sales Update;

With 7 albums charting inside the BB200, Michael Jackson has sold around 54,000 albums in US this week. That's 11,000 more than the previous week.

With this week's 54K sales his rank go up from #18 to #16 on N/SS's list of the best-sellers in its history (which dates to 1991).

Michael Jackson was the savior for music sales last year. 2009 will be the last big year for record sales because of his passing. Only now are people realizing how big he was for album sales. 33 years after the death of Elvis, the music of Elvis still sells well. A greatest hits album from Elvis just a few years ago moved 4 million copies.

We have a ways to go yet but, if Michael Jackson is still selling albums in 2040 then , the impact of his death could be compared to Elvis.

I just hope I can get Relapse numbers this week or next because it's so close to 2 Million. I know it did no more than 7 K this past week so it still is probably 7 K off from it.

If you read my post correctly, you'd see my point was that SoundScan didn't exist back when Elvis Presley died in 1977, therefore, stating that his death had a bigger impact on sales can't be proven since a precise comparison is not possible.

The best you can do is rely on Billboard and other world charts for information and so far nothing's ever been produced to show he broke the multitude of chart records MJ broke immediately following his death. And nothing's ever been produced to show Elvis sold 35 million units worldwide one year following his death.

HMV (which has operated since 1921) also backs up my assertion. (business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article6607989.ece )

And since you're such a fan of facts, let's not forget these about MJ:

- First artist to sell more than 1 million digital tracks in one week (selling 2.6 million)
- Scored 49 of the Top 200 titles on Hot Digital Songs (holding down 6 of the Top 10 slots)
- Owned the entire Top 3 albums in the USA in one week (Number Ones, The Essential, and Thriller)
- For seven weeks, three of the five best-selling albums in the U.S
- For two weeks, six of the ten best selling albums in the US
- Scored four top 20 albums of 2009
- Scored nine of the top 200 digital songs of 2009.
- Forced Billboard to change its long-time policy of excluding catalog albums from The Billboard 200.
- Top grossing concert film/documentary in history
- Biggest recording deal in history

Those statistics back up that people downloaded his music in droves the year following his death.

You got me on that. Not one person downloaded an Elvis song in 1977


Anyway, I agree that Michael Jackson's death had a big impact on music and generated a big interest in his music.

It is the biggest death to hit music since John Lennon and Elvis.

I would not necessarily say that it was bigger.

Get back to me if Michael Jackson is still selling music in 2040, 30 years after his death.

No one can deny the fact that MJ's post death album sales are uncomparable. Even in Billboard Chart Watch column they wrote it as something that they have never seen happened in music industry. It's uncomparable specially considering the fact the industy was in it's worst state ever when the surge of MJ sales occured. Can you imagine what would have been the state of last year's album sales in US without 9 million MJ albums!
Everyone knows John Lennon died just before tha digital era began. And he doesn't even come close what MJ has achieved since his death. True the death of Lennon as a person is a huge lost to music but his death couldn't boost record sales like MJ did.
I think only Elvis Presley as an artist had such uproar in industry world wide. I think he is the only act who come close. MJ not only had record sales in US he also had astounding international success. True Elvis died long before but I think even he couldn't had such uproar in sales wise. And not to forget MJ did all this with having only 6 studio albums to his name.

This is what Billboard Senior Chart Manager Keith Caulfield said; “Last year, when we saw the instant response from consumers wanting to purchase Michael’s albums, there was nothing to compare it to,” “This particular situation is unique – the reaction from fans, the reaction of the marketplace – all of that was uncharted territory,” “Michael Jackson existed on his own plane – in sales, in artistry — there was Michael, and then there was everyone else,” Caulfield said.

In 30 years or not one thing is sure no one will have such huge album sales that MJ is going to have within 3 years after his death. It doesn't matter if he is going to remember like Elvis after 30 years but he will certainly outsell everyone with his upcomming album releases. Any person can remembered if media is there to notice it.,but the huge commercial success is the real bench-mark to convince one's appeal to the public and MJ has proved it within one year already. That is the impact he has on public. Which is uncomparable.

It's difficult to compare the impacts of MJ and EP's deaths on the music world considering they died 32 years apart. The industry is completely different now than then.

In the not everything is available at the touch of a button era, John Lennon's album 'Double Fantasy' went to #1 and his single went to #1 immediately following his death. His subsequent singles went top 10. Tribute songs from other artists followed that also charted high. John Lennon's solo work is not at the same volume as Michael Jackson/Jackson 5. In fact Double Fantasy was his first album since 1975.

News reports about the premature death of a Beatle was just as big news 30 years ago as the premature death of Michael Jackson. A 40 year old member of the Beatles being shot in front of his apartment building, generated similar news coverage.


Again, regarding Elvis, in a not everything is avaailable at the touch of a button era, saying "Elvis is the only artist to come close to Michael Jackson's impact" might need to be reversed before I can buy into it.


We are taking an era where numbers are readily available and comparing to an era where numbers are not readiy available and going see....of course Michael is bigger than Elvis.

Everything is available at the touch of a button now, back in the old days, you used to have to drive to a record store to purchase an album


Of course, at least here, Michael Jackson is always going to be remembered more fondly and be considred a bigger star than Elvis or John Lennon, since he just died last year and these other deaths occured 30 years ago

Yeah.,John Lennon did have success but not 10% of MJ's achievements.
Only Elvis Presley is having such a huge impact after death. I wouldn't compare Elvis & MJ since they were in different eras, but the post death achievements of MJ is something no one can even imagine.,specially considering given negative publicity by the media when he died.,but suddenly they all turn around. I think that speaks the enormity of MJ the musician.
Elvis Presley is uncomparable to anyother artist even today.,same goes with Michael Jackson too(there is no other performer like MJ) Though I think it's safe to say he is the greatest entertainer ever considering his multi talent singing, dancing and writing.
In Lennon's case he is never a great singer like Elvis.,he never had the success he once had with the Beatles nor Mr. McCartney. As a solo artist and performers Elvis and MJ are in their own league.

Where do you get 10%? You can't compare Michael Jackson to Elvis in terms of numbers for the same reason you can't compare Michael Jackson to John Lennon. You couldn't instantly download John Lennon's catalog in 1980 any more than you could download Elvis catalog in 1977
