Nic, it's 10+ #1 hits in both the USA and UK. Counting pre-Hot 100 years, Elvis has 17 in the USA and 21 in the UK, the latter counting three reissues that hit No. 1 in 2005. The Beatles have 20 in the USA and 17 in the UK, and Madonna has 12 in the USA and 13 in the UK.
If we went back to pre-rock era, Bing Crosby has like 36 No. 1 hits in the USA. :) Stevie Wonder would have 10 U.S. #1s if "That's What Friends Are For" were credited to the three "Friends"- I think Billboard does credit him- were the "Friends'" names appear on the single credit, or was it just "Dionne & Friends"?
Those Japanese No. 1 hits- are they on the all-encompassing Oricon singles chart? Still can't believe that digital sales have yet to be mixed into the main Oricon singles chart (where non-Japanese acts do not fare nearly as well as Japanese acts).

HG, I believe Billboard does credit Stevie as well as Elton & Gladys for the track.

Does billboard include radio airplay from all the FM radio stations in the US, however many thousand that is, or does it not include genre specific stations in its radio airplay charts that make up a portion of the billboard hot 100. Is it only top 40 radio play that counts, or all radio play?

Yes, those #1s are from the all-encompassing Oricon chart. In fact, Ayumi Hamasaki accumulated all of those #1s in just a 12 year period.

You know I'm amazed that only 3 acts have gotten 10+ #1 hits in the US. No, The Beatles, Mike, Mariah, Elvis, Whitney, Madonna, Janet, Stevie, and The Supremes have all scored 10 or more #1's in the US. And it looks like at this rate, Rihanna will soon join that club.

Joel Whitburn had been crediting all acts involved in "That's What Friends Are For," but in the latest edition of Top Pop Singles, he removed it from the listings for Wonder, John and Knight. Billboard, I believe, does credit all involved, as d.t.m. stated (it recently credited Stevie Wonder with 10 No. 1 hits, which would include that track).
Nic, more than 1,000 stations comprise the Hot 100 Airplay panel- it consists of Mainstream Top 40, Rhythmic top 40, Adult Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Urban, Urban AC, Mainstream Rock, Modern Rock, Latin, Country, etc. Prior to December 1998, the airplay chart had consisted of just Mainstream Top40, Rhythmic top 40, Adult Top 40, Adult Contemporary and Modern Rock. When BDS started monitoring airplay in late 1990, the chart was "Top 40 Radio Monitor" and the count topped 100 stations (but was less than 130). When Billboard implemented the Top 40/Mainstream and Top 40/Rhythm-Crossover charts circa September 1992, the count was around 130- then, gradually, the count started increasing (declining every now and then in between until late 1998).

Paul Grein chart blog:
"Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem featuring Rihanna this week becomes only the third song in digital history to top 300,000 in weekly sales three times. It follows Flo Rida's "Right Round" and "California Gurls" by Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg, each of which topped 300K four times. "Love The Way You Lie" sold 352K this week (its heftiest sum to date), bringing its four-week total to 1,288,000.
"Love The Way You Lie" tops Hot Digital Songs for the fourth straight week. This is Eminem's longest run at #1 on this chart, surpassing "Just Lose It," which had three weeks on top in 2004. (Em's biggest hit, 2002's "Lose Yourself," pre-dated the advent of digital charts.)
As of this week, the tracks on Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster album have sold a combined total of 25,054,000 digital copies. That's more than any other album in history. Tracks from the Black Eyed Peas' The E.N.D. (Deluxe Edition) have sold a combined total of 18,112,000 copies. Tracks from Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded have sold a combined total of 17,081,000 copies.

The original single does credit it to "Dionne & Friends," but then it also has a notation under the title that specifies: "featuring Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder" ... so they are on there by name as well as the collective "& Friends."

Rihanna might land her 8th #1 with the upcoming Jay-Z collabo or at least with her next pop friendly lead later this year.

Eminem now has four #4's in the US. All as lead artist.
I believe it's now 10 counting 6 from the UK as lead artist.

It's either US #1's or UK #1's. For example, Rihanna's 'Don't Stop The Music' is an UK #1, but it reached just #3 in the US. Same for Britney who has more UK #1's. And Rihanna's #1 count has to include her featured ones. She was a big part in those songs (Live Your Life, Love The Way You Lie), as well as some other big hits with her name (Run This Town)
