Funny how sales-wise, Airplanes and OMG are even with each other, yet OMG was the #1 hit. Well for the other half of the equation, I don't think Airplanes was #1 on any radio chart. Unrelatedly, looks like that quite bad Not Afraid is going to go T20 airplay.

Well yeah, OMG had the advantage in airplay.. but if radio were to go upon what the public were actually buying, they would have given Airplanes the same airplay, yet OMG got more rotations.

On the other hand there was a period of over 6 years in the 80's and early 90's (1985 to mid 1991) when NOT one #1 song stayed on top for more than 4 weeks. God I remember that week in 1991 when Paula was # 1 for a fifth week and we were all thinking, Man, nothing has been this big since January 1985! Lol! I was thinking that same thing while reading this thread then you say it. Hahaha

... and then Bryan Adams did it again like two months later. It was like there was this sudden shift.

It's not as clear cut as that. Usher has sold way more albums than B.O.B. so OMG's digital sales would suffer as a result. For this reason (and some others) radio's playlists don't mirror the iTunes chart/digital sales.

Unrelatedly, looks like that quite bad Not Afraid is going to go T20 airplay. Pick a chart, any chart. Odds are "Airplanes" peaked at #2. Pop songs? #2 Rhythmic? #2 Radio Songs? #2 Digital Sales? #2 Hot 100? #2.

Those concerned about Uncle Kracker's absence should be assuaged this week. But it looks like its digital sales must be nowhere near its airplay to only rank at #33.

I still don't understand why so many people think digital sales is the only - and perfect - way to measure a song's popularity. They completely disregard album sales, streaming, internet buzz, etc.

Wow, good to Smile back! So it was SUPPOSED to be #25 last week?!?! Wow, that's a huge oversight. Nice to see it's still in the Top 40 at #33 though. That means Rob Thomas' #100 entry last week would have been pushed out or does it still count (considering it has gone again this week)?

Ohhhhh gotcha.... so it's a RE-ENTRY at #33. Still not bad considering it was wiped from the Hot 100! A top 40 hit for Uncle Kracker!

Yay for Billboard charting "Smile"- you're welcome, all. Kary Perry probably will hit the top 10, at least, with "Teenage Dream," I'd think.

Haha indeed. And, "Smile" was making such decent gains, that from the last time they checked it, it was below the top 50- but, like they said, things change quickly. :)
Notice the ranking difference between Mediabase and BDS- because "Smile" is getting a lot of country play now, that accounts for the difference, as Mediabase usually (or always) has higher totals for tracks garnering strong country play.

Did Billboard bend their rules with Smile? Because #33 is pretty high for a re-entry. It would've made the Top 50 last week surely?

Did Billboard bend their rules with Smile? Because #33 is pretty high for a re-entry. It would've made the Top 50 last week surely? They had just forgotten to track it, since it had already (erroneously, really) been moved to recurrent status. Thanks to HolidayGuy pointing out that the song was still gaining and would be at a higher peak than its previous #43 position, they factored it back into the Hot 100. It likely would have been Top 40 for a couple of weeks now. At least they caught it in time! As it's still gaining at country, it probably hasn't reached its true peak position yet.

I said "likely" before I looked at iTunes and saw how "Teenage Dream" was doing- yah, it definitely should jump to top 10 next week. And, it debuted at No. 75 on this week's Hot 100 Airplay/Radio Songs chart.
