WB Hardcore SoCal Metal Act Challenges for #1
July 28, 2010
Veteran Warner Bros. Huntington Beach metalcore act Avenged Sevenfold looks like a real contender for the top spot next week with the release their fifth album, Nightmare, the first since the death of their longtime drummer, James “The Rev” Sullivan, last December.
The Rev wrote several of the songs and his vocals remain on the album. Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy finished up the disc on drums, and will join the group on tour, where they are part of the CAA/Live Nation Uproar Festival with Disturbed, which starts Aug. 17 in Minneapolis, sponsored by Rockstar Energy Drink.
Dedicated to The Rev’s memory, Nightmare is on target for the band’s best-ever first-week with a total of between 160-175k. Its only challenger for the top spot is the resilient Eminem, whose Shady/Aftermath/Interscope album Recovery enters its sixth week in the Top 50 after five straight weeks at #1 (at least on that other chart).
The only other debuts of note include Strange Music’s indie rappers Tech N9ne (17-20k) and Kedar Entertainment’s veteran R&B star Dru Hill (12-15k).
The market was up 1% vs. last week, down 15% vs. same week last year and still down 12% year to date. And you thought pigeon droppings on your head meant good luck.

Hopefully Eminem snatches the top spot again. Nah, A7X deserve this one. Eminem's had a good run at the top. It's time for somebody else to have a go.

We haven't had a rock album at No.1 for a while now. The last one was Godsmack back in May.

I want Eminem to get 9 Straight Weeks at #1. So, no, Eminem needs that glory. Disturbed will hit #1 when that albums is released so they will break the no rock #1 spell.

Maybe so but Disturbed have already had 3 No.1 albums. A7X have not had any so far and this is probably going to be their best chance of getting ones. Besides, Eminem will be No.1 the week after anyway. 8 non-consecutive weeks at the top would still be pretty damn good so let him step aside for a week.

I like Avenged Sevenfold, but I'm much more of a Eminem fan, so I want him to stay at the top! Plus, Recovery is an amazing record, probably my favorite ever from him!

No matter what those are still very good numbers for avenged. really good compared to there first week sales for there last record. I guess i was right Avenged would be the biggest challenger these next four week. So Eminem needs another real tiny drop to hold on to #1 it seems.

This is the first time I've been so happy about an album staying atop for so long in years.

I'm no huge Eminem fan but I have to agree, these sales are the most exciting thing to happen to the industry since Lady A and Susan Boyle. I'm hoping with the holiday sales and potential future smashes off the album it will make it to 5xp when said and done

That is, if the label ever certifies it!

It is frustrating though, the thought of the potentially highest selliing album of the year remaining uncertified indefinitely for all we know

It bothers me as well. Obviously though it doesnt bother Em. I would love to use the "Em has two diamond album" argument but can't because the label won't certify MMLP or TES. The other albums why i wish were certified up to what they are i mainly just wish MMLP and TES were certified first and foremost. For Music Historians and etc.
But of course i wish they all were certified up to par but i want MMLP and TES to be certified diamond.

I'm shocked at Avenged Sevenfold's numbers.
Their self-titled predecessor didn't even sell six-digits in its opening week. I was raising that point in the "Nightmare" single thread in arguing how they don't stand a chance against Eminem in claiming the top spot of the Billboard 200.
I may very well have egg on my face come Tuesday.

I think it would be really cool if Avenged would take it. I generally like when we have lots of #1s compared to one artist dominating #1 though even if I like the artist that is dominating.

This is there first album without there longtime drummer so the grief angle has been highly publicized. Also, Unlike Rick Ross who had albums in the passed that sold well that made us think he could challenge Em...Avenged Sevenfold has nothing in there past that even comes close to this. As i type Recovery is back up to #2 and #3 on iTunes. Avenged is #1 & #4. Earlier today Recovery was #2 and #4 while Avenged was #1 & #3. While Digital sales are only part of the equation (1/4 or 1/5) if Recovery outsells it digitaly then i think Em will take #1. He outsold Ross digitally. He took #1. We will see.

Eminem being at 2 & 3 could be enough to tie/beat Avenged even if they are at 1 and 4.
Let's say that #1 is 1000 copies
#2 is 750 copies #3 is 500 copies #4 is 250 copies
I know those are not the values (and they are probably way off) but that doesn't matter for this point. all that matters is that is each position down is a lower number of copies.
If avenged has #1 (1000) and #4 (250) they would have 1,250 copies
Em #2 (750) and #3 (500) he would also have 1,250.
Basically, the point of all this is, Eminem has a great shot at #1! =)

Another possible factor in explaining A7X's projected sales is that the drummer on this album is Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy. DT are a band that only has one Gold album (compared with A7X's 3) and their last 4 albums have averaged 136,000 copies in the US. However, they are bigger outside North America and headline arenas throughout Europe and South America. They could probably do the same in the US and Canada if they only did a 12 date tour but even here, they still play the odd arena or amphitheatre on their tours. DT fans will take an interest in anything a band member does outside the band and the stuff Portnoy does in particular. Therefore, I'm sure quite a few DT fans, who wouldn't normally take an interest in A7X, are buying this album just because Portnoy is on it and they have to own everything he's ever been involved with. And since DT's last album sold 40k in its opening week, that would be a significant percentage of Nightmare's 1st week sales.

I hope Avenged Sevenfold takes the top. They really deserve their first #1 album, especially after the passing of The Rev.

The A7X album is not being received very well critically. It may be their worst reviewed album yet. The fans don't seem to care though.

www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiYOUR WEAKEND TOP 17 CHART PREVIEW: Thanks to Eminem’s continuing roll and now Avenged Sevenfold’s rabid fan base, the dog days are a feeling bit less enervating heading into the first chart of August. As for next week’s #1, even though the numbers suggest otherwise, it's still too close to call between front-running Avenged Sevenfold and steady Eminem heading into the weekend. I hope A7X makes it. Not a fan of this album at all, but they had good material in the last ones and I'd like to see a new #1 already.
