I gather that they all will be featured on the upcoming program. It sure made a global list out of this, which is cool. The U.S. heavyweights are represented. edition.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Music/07/28/icon.music.vote/#fbid=9oHZLh49KDTCNN's new arts and culture show "icon," in conjunction with music magazine "Songlines," has shortlisted 20 globally renowned musicians from the past 50 years. Vote for your favorite artists and we'll reveal the top five in "icon's" interactive gallery at cnn.com/icon when our music show airs on August 25. (listed in no particular order, just as they appear on the site) Khaled Miriam Makeba Youssou N’Dour Asha Bhosle Nusrat Fatch Ali Khan The Beatles The Rolling Stones Oum Kalsoum Bob Marley James Brown Bob Dylan Elvis Presley Aretha Franklin Madonna Michael Jackson Ceilia Cruz Gilberto Gil Juanes Leslie Cheung Teresa Teng

I've heard of Juanes, but not being in Latin America, I'm not aware of the scope of his iconography. Perhaps some Latin Americans can enlighten?
Most of the "no..." inquiries (some of which were not serious, I'm aware hehe) posted would not be near the level of musical iconography as the U.S. acts listed. Tina Turner would be the most legendary/notable, but even still, not at that same level. Eminem is on his way.

Seriously, there's only 20 slots to be filled. Who would you remove from the list to make room for Beyonce, or Eminem, or Rihanna?

She has one of the best voices this generation and amazing performance skills. Eminem and Rihanna should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as "icon".

Gilberto Gil? ??? If they want a Brazilian artist they should put Tom Jobim, Roberto Carlos, or Elis Regina on the list Even Caetano Veloso (Gilberto Gil partner) is more iconic than him

yeah Juanes is a pretty big deal in Latin America from what I've heard (and experienced watching the music channels during my time in Costa Rica). "La Camisa Negra" is one of the biggest Spanish-language hits in music history.

I guess maybe some of the people on the list are on it more for their iconic status than anything else. And I have to say, it's nice for once to see other countries more represented in this particular list. Too often these kind of lists are too US/UK centric, and they ignore a lot of the other great talent that exists out there in the world.

I'm so sick of these types of lists...seriously, what's the point of releasing multiple ones every single year when the same deceased legends are on them...
I'd be more interested in reading an article on the most iconic/influential artists of the past 10, 5 years.

Madonna does play guitar. But, really, she is usually on these features because of her music, what she has done via her music in terms of challenging gender/racial/religious/sexual mores, and the incomparable performance standards that she has set. Eminem probably would be the standout among acts to emerge in the last 10+ years- Rolling Stone had him on its list of Immortal Artists, and he's been the most critically acclaimed act to emerge in that time period. Among females to emerge in the last 10+ years, Beyonce has had a few singles that have racked up acclaim- as has Britney Spears- but neither of them are really seen as great musical artists (for instance, their albums have not racked up a whole lot of acclaim). Same for Rihanna- a few singles that have racked up decent acclaim- but no album that would be approach a WOW moment. Beyonce and Spears have had iconic moments, but none of them have done anything that is remotely comparable to the great icons of the last 50 years. Plus, aside from those legendary acts' iconography, both their singles and albums have been revered.
