I gather that they all will be featured on the upcoming program. It sure made a global list out of this, which is cool. The U.S. heavyweights are represented. edition.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Music/07/28/icon.music.vote/#fbid=9oHZLh49KDTCNN's new arts and culture show "icon," in conjunction with music magazine "Songlines," has shortlisted 20 globally renowned musicians from the past 50 years. Vote for your favorite artists and we'll reveal the top five in "icon's" interactive gallery at cnn.com/icon when our music show airs on August 25. (listed in no particular order, just as they appear on the site) Khaled Miriam Makeba Youssou N’Dour Asha Bhosle Nusrat Fatch Ali Khan The Beatles The Rolling Stones Oum Kalsoum Bob Marley James Brown Bob Dylan Elvis Presley Aretha Franklin Madonna Michael Jackson Ceilia Cruz Gilberto Gil Juanes Leslie Cheung Teresa Teng I'm baffled Juanes made the list, but not Julio and Enrique Iglesias, as well as Shakira! I can't argue with any of the others, though. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

The American/English group of artists that are on this list have careers that go back to at least the 80's or before. Maybe someone like Mariah is too recent to be considered for this type of list just yet? That would explain the lack of other more recent artists on the list as well.

peigan and others- Mimi Carey usually does not fare well on these kinds of lists, as neither she nor her music has ever been a major critical success, or iconic. I mean, never mind the greatest/most important artists, greatest music, etc. features, for which she has not fared all that well compared to others; when Rolling Stone had the 100 Greatest Singers list, she didn't even fare that well (Christina Aguilera placed higher).
If it were a list of most most commercially successful acts, then, yeah, Mimi would have a good shot at appearing.

Taylor has made a couple of decent albums, garnered some critical kudos (but not overwhelming) and has done very well, commercially- but I can't imagine anyone using "iconic" to describe her or her music- at least as of now.

This thread is so cringeworthy because 99% of posters are being sarcastic, but everybody thinks they're the only one.

No Taylor Swift????? What kind of list is this??? In what possible way is Taylor Swift a world wide icon on the same level as the Beatles or Elvis Presley? None. Next someone's going to suggest Justin Beiber should be on this list.

It changes with the times. Lady Gaga was on it this year. Haha yeah the people-not-getting-other-people's-sarcasm thing is getting annoying. So let's just drop the facetious "Where's *name?*" thing, 'kay?

Madonna is grateful she is off that list. ;)

^Indeed. That was a mess of a list. Miley is very popular, obviously, but not exactly one of the first that comes to mind when thinking of "influential."
The U.S. acts featured among the 20 on this it, like I said, are usual suspects, who have fared very well over the years on best/greatest/most important, etc. lists, whether it's as artists themselves or for their albums and songs. The most acclaimed mainstream acts to emerge in the last 20 years probably would be Nirvana and Eminem- and they've fared very well on best/greatest/mot important features, too.

Juanes is the biggest surprise for me - I mean, he came out in the early 2000's, he must be the youngest of the whole list. But there are other latin musicians and singers much more iconic than him, such as Luis Miguel and Julio Iglesias.

I didn't know wtf they meant by Khaled until I realized they mean Cheb Khaled... the only reason I feel odd about Juanes being on here is that he's so much younger than the other people. That, by the way, is the main reason most of these names you're all mentioning aren't on here-- these people have been (or were) huge since the 60's and 70's. The only valid one I heard on here was Elton John I think, but they did have to keep it down to 20...
