Merge Records Act’s Third Album, The Suburbs, Will Challenge Eminem for Top Spot
August 4, 2010
The HITS album sales chart is about to get some Canadian content.
Red-hot Montreal band Arcade Fire’s third Merge Records album, The Suburbs, will challenge hip-hop superstar Eminem for the #1 spot on next week’s Top 50.
Based on one-day sales reports from those retail contacts foolish enough not to take a summer vacation, the band should do between 125-150k, which should beat out fellow indie band Vampire Weekend’s chart-topping total of 121k back in January. Arcade Fire’s last album, 2007’s Neon Bible, debuted with 92k. The band’s new release has been accompanied by much hoopla, including a four-star Rolling Stone rave and an adulatory Jon Pareles N.Y. Times Arts & Leisure feature.
Interscope’s Lady Gaga heads the list of the week’s other newcomers with a “remix” album that is on target for between 35-40k.
Rap-a-Lot/Fontana’s Bun B, the surviving member of the group UGK after the death of partner Pimp C, releases his solo album, Trill OG, which features contributions from his ex-bandmate as well as Young Jeezy, Yo Gotti and Gucci Mane, along with producers J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Drumma Boy and Boi-1da. The disc looks on target for between 30-35k in sales.
Eleven Seven L.A. rockers Buckcherry return with All Night Long, the first release for the Grammy nominees since 2008’s Black Butterfly, and slated for between 25-30k, the same total as Silver Arrow’s Black Crowes album, Croweology, featuring mostly acoustic rearrangements of some of the band’s greatest hits.
Glassnote’s Secondhand Serenade is the week’s other debut, with a total between 8-12k for their third album, Hear Me Now.
The market was down 1% vs. last week, down 13% vs. same week last year and still down 12% year to date. You may now resume following our own viral phenomenon Lenny Beer (www.twitter.com/cliprboy) on Twitter (with thanks to Justin Bieber).
