Are there any songs that got played so much in your city/area that if you didn't know better, you would have thought they were major hits? In other words, got far more airplay than their chart peaks would indicate?
Also, say where you're from
I'm from the NYC metro area in New Jersey
Here's some big local hits: Bon Jovi - It's My Life Bon Jovi - Thank You For Loving Me Bon Jovi - Misunderstood Dave Matthews Band - Crush Dido - Here With Me Lara Fabian - I Will Love Again Reina - No One's Gonna Change You Modjo - Lady (Hear Me Tonight) Amber - Yes! Tanto Metro & Devonte - Give It To Her Tanto Metro & Devonte - Everyone Falls In Love

In Connecticut:
Tanto Metro & Devante's "Everyone Falls In Love" got played all the time. I still here it a lot.
KC-101 plays a lot of Bon Jovi too. They have been playing Live's "Heaven" a lot as well.

I remember these songs being discussed more in Denver than in the average city...
"Big Girl" ~ Angela Ammons "A Toast to Men" ~ Willa Ford "Simply Being Loved" ~ BT "Think Twice" ~ Eve 6, (did well, but we made it out to do great!) "Never" ~ Roc Project "Sandstorm" ~ Darude "Lovin' Each Day" ~ Ronan Keating "Eyes Closed So Tight" ~ Vi3 "Objection (Tango)" ~ Shakira "Girl All the Bad Guys Want" ~ Bowling for Soup "Roll out" ~ Ludacris (Pop) "A Praised Chorus" ~ Jimmy Eat World "Sweetest Sin" ~ Jessica Simpson "With You" ~ Jessica Simpson "Damaged" ~ TLC "Hollywood" ~ Madonna (Hot AC) "This I Swear" ~ Nick Lachey "All I Need" ~ Lindsey Pagano "Dumb Girls" ~ Lucy Woodward "Everything" ~ Stereo Fuse (Hot AC) "Into You" ~ Fabolous ft. Tamia (Pop) "Come into My World" ~ Kylie Minogue "James Dean (I Wanna Know)" ~ Daniel Bedingfield "Tell Me" ~ Smiles and Southstar

Add that to my list for NYC area also. Where in CT are you? Do you get NYC stations? Right now, I'm down in Fairfield, so I get NYC stations. I still prefer KC-101, but will listen to Z-100, BLI and PLJ on ocassion. I still do hear TM&D on Z-100, but Kiss 95.7 beat that thing to death a few years ago. You would have thought it was #1 for months back then.

Seattle stations liked these songs:
Vendetta Red "Opiate Summer" (KNDD stopped playing "Shatterday" once it starting rising on the alt chart) The Postal Service "Such Great Heights" The Pale "Gravity Gets Things Done" (actually got some airplay on my hot AC station) Mudvayne "Not Falling" (after it went recurrent, anyway) Jack Johnson "Wasting Time" (it seems to be getting considerable airplay on my hot AC station) Santana with Chad Kroeger "Why Don't You And I" (apparently nobody in Seattle liked the Alex Band version >:()

At last check, KHTS is the only CHR station playing "Sweet Honey" by Slightly Stoopid. They were also the only CHR station playing Brian McKnight's "Coulda Woulda Shoulda".

Power 106 plays several songs from rappers that are only big here. And they play them all the time. Like "Gangsta Nation" by West Side Connection, "Way I Am" by Knocturnal, "Say My Name" by Xzibit feat. Eminem & Nate Dogg, amongst other songs

I don't know why it went away after I edited my first post, but I'll just add it here for the NYC area.
Luther Vandross - Dance With My Father (was in heavy rotation at Pop, Urban, Urban AC, Rhythmic, AC, and Hot AC.... that's 6 formats = you couldn't escape it the month of August)

In Detroit:
BT "Simply Being Loved" Roc Project "Never" Fabolous f. Tamia "Into You" (I'm SO sick of this, they didn't play "Can't Let You Go" very much... Simple Plan "Addicted" Wayne Wonder "No Letting Go" Angie Martinez "If I Could Go" (They played this SO much, I probably would have thought it hit #1 if I wasn't familiar with the charts)
96.9 WBTI in Port Huron used to play EVERY Uncle Kracker song in high rotation for months and months. (Actually, they still do, even though they changed formats)

Another Kiss 95.7 favorite in Hartford was Ashley Ballard's "Hottie". Constant airplay when it came out.
They also play a ton of Simple Plan, but that song seems big everywhere.

Amber: Songs Jersey Boy didn't name La Rissa: "I Do Both Jay And Jane" Melanie C: "I Turn To You (Remix)" Son By Four: "Purest Of Pain (A Puro Dolor)" (a big Spanish hit for those who don't know, on Z100 for 2000 it beat the Billboard Hot 100 Number 3 for the year "Maria, Maria") Jennifer Lopez: "Let's Get Loud" were local hits were local hits WKTU still plays "Turn The Beat Around." WQHT may have been one of the leaders for "Unfoolish." More Dave Matthews Band: I've also heard "The Space Between" and "Ants Marching" I wonder if the New York City stations played thye new Gloria Estefan. There are also songs that Z100 was early on. They played "Never Let You Go" early (maybe not, it's hard to tell without seeing 31-50). Z100 and WKTU played 'N Sync's whole album a week before it came out and "Bye Bye Bye" and "It's Gonna Be Me" were on the request countdowns at the same time two months before "It's Gonna Be Me" made the Billboard Hot 100.

Ugh how could I have forgot that. That song was torturous. Also torturous is NYC's obsession with Marc Anthony. One would have thought "My Baby You," "I Need You," and "I've Got You" all spent multiple weeks at #1. Trash trash trash.

Detroit for some reason loves LiL kim and will swallow anything she releases.

The Immigrants "Holding Onto This Somehow" was played in Northern Ontario, but nowhere else... it was pretty popular too.

Let me shift this to a different level for a moment. I remember living in Mt. Pleasant Texas working for a 100,000 watt CHR station (in a town of over 12,000 people with a really bad economy!), we played this song called Moonlight on Water by an unknown artist (who signed with Atlantic) named Kevin Raleigh. Unlike all of the CHRs in 1988 we get requests for it (all they knew lyrically was "sex on the beach") and what was also unusual, we were one of the first to put it to #1 in one big area of Northeast Texas that others couldn't touch. It wasn't shown on any national chart at the time and i guess it was a local favorite. Although this was way before or after your time, it was one crazy experience.

Deborah Cox: "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here (Remix)" WBLI plays "I Never Knew" also. Z100 played Eve: "Gotta Man" for a long time (song did not chart on CHR-Pop). They also played "Roc Ya Body Mic Check 1, 2" close together for a song that isn't on the chart.

Whoa! This station sounds a lot like Denver's. They absolutely loved all those songs! They also didn't play "Can't Let You Go" at all! Man, but they were obsessed with Angie Martinez, and even when it went recurrent they wouldn't let it go! As for Simple Plan, the began playing it 80-90 times a week as it started falling! They still had it at that much when it went recurrent. They just knocked it down to 30 spins a week, finally!

WHTZ used to play it quite a bit as well. And KTU.... practically all of Deborah's dance songs are big NYC hits. I'm betting that now that "SHOTWTH" has been #1 on KTU for so long, Z100 will add it sometime in December/January... giving her another big NYC hit.

Obviously, all Detroit stations play the heck out of Eminem. I also heard "Beautiful" and "Fighter" ALL THE TIME when they were popular (although I didn't hear much of "Dirrty").
Another thing, I never heard "Harder To Breathe" until it hit the Top 10, now I hear it a lot.
96.9 in Port Huron, on the other hand...they always played John Mayer, Uncle Kracker, and the Dave Matthews Band. I actually heard "Everyday" in early 2003 on that station...the song peaked at #40 over a year before! Now they're all Hot AC with lots of 80's stuff, which is why I listen to Detroit stations instead of the local stuff.

Both the Active Rock and Hot AC stations played Sense Field's "Save Yourself" lots last year. I sure wasn't complaining.

Lose Yourself had to be the most overplayed song in the history of Detroit, at one point if you combined the totals from both pop stations and both urban stations, it was being played over 400 times a week. And to top that off the 2 Pop stations were also EACH playing "8 Mile" 80 to 90 times as well, so that means i heard Eminem over 550 times in the month of November/Decmeber. For two whole weeks Both songs were even #1 and #2 on DRQ's Phat 5 at 8.
"Beautiful" did get overplayed, but that was everywhere. Figher-Not nearly as much as it should've, and not nearly as much as CHUD. If you look right now on Mediabase on the top 20 stations playing CHUD, both Detroit stations are in the top ten i believe.
Songs like "Harder To Breathe" and "Unwell" were never heard until they reached the top ten, and "Unwell" is still overplayed even though it's pretty much over.

KMXV and KCHZ both at one time were leaders for T.A.T.U. "All The Things She Said" I remember we were playing it 60 times a week before the song even reached 20 spins anywhere else. VI-3 and "James Dean" were played a lot at KCHZ. KMXV has had "When I'm Gone" in their Top 10 for 9 months!! Talk about overplayed, I use to love the song, but now I could care less if I ever hear it again on the radio.
