Did she perform her typical cover of "At Last" or did she tone it down? I really, really hate her traditional rendition of that song. It just completely sucks any life, emotion, restraint, and beauty out of the song for me. She has a very soulful, full voice and I think she could sing that song quite well if she sang it, not strangled it.

I wish she'd sing it like Etta sang it, without all those ridiculous runs and melisma.

I love her as an artist, and love her voice-- but she HAS to stop all the runs. It's annoying.

I wish she'd sing it like Etta sang it, without all those ridiculous runs and melisma. While that would have been lovely as well, I like hearing Christina put her own signature spin on it. I think she did a wonderful job! I thought Christina looked really good here.

I was going to say... there's way too much melisma in that performance for my taste but Etta herself used a lot of melisma in her performances, so it's fitting at least.

I don't think they've topped the original studio version - I guess that's just how I feel this song should be interpreted.

Although I understand why a lot of people may not be fans of the way Christina sings, it amazes me that people are still complaining about it. Christina has ALWAYS sang like the performance above, with lots of melisma and runs involved; what did you expect from a Christina performance? Christina is not a straightforward singer who wants to sing songs like the original; she has always sang everything in her own style.
Clearly Etta was a fan of Xtina, and I doubt she would've been so complimentary of her if she didn't care for the way she sings. Christina sang "At Last" the way she has always sang it, and Etta seemed to love Christina's unique style. Etta knew what to expect when it came to Christina, and I doubt she would've wanted her to sing it any differently, simply because that's HER style.

Yep, Etta herself had a lot of grit, runs, and melisma in her voice at times. It is an often disrespected way of singing now and it is possible Etta herself and many other singles would struggle nowadays with constant screams of "OMG OVERSINGINGF!!!!!" Sometimes I feel like Christina should have been born a few decades ago ha ha. Either way, very fitting performance, Etta herself loved Christina and I think would be happy with that performance. Hopefully, Christina is able to change how she sings because 2012 just doesn't like that style.

That's definitely not a recent trend. Mariah Carey frequently got lambasted by music critics back in the early 90s for all the melisma she used (and she didn't use nearly as much as Christina frequently does). As far as pop listeners go, I think a certain amount is fine. Artists like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston used melisma in many of their hits, but there is definitely a point that I think people become annoyed with it. When the melody is completely lost in vocal runs or the song feels like it's being dragged out by taking 3 syllable words and turning them into 20 syllable words, people just get annoyed. Beyoncé is a contemporary of Christina's who also gets criticized for her use of melisma. In both of their cases, it tends to be something more frequently found in their live performances than studio recordings though. In that case, I think it's fine.

I definitely think it is way worse now than it has been in any type of recent past though (like, past decade or so). Mariah may have had some detractors, but she was also one of the top selling females ever on the strength of her voice. Same with Whitney and both are (still?) considered some of the best female voices ever. Now, I feel like you literally cannot be huge if you have a big voice. Even the voices considered best today are people who are extremely controlled and very restrained when it comes to any type of runs or melisma. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it does amuse me how many legendary women would have never become legends if they were in this time just because everyone would be like OMG A RUN HOW HORRIBLE. Or how many legendary performances would have never been appreciated if they happened now. I still appreciate big voices. What can I say? I grew up listening to Etta, Aretha, many others and to some extent Whitney and Mariah as well. I will always have a soft spot for it no matter how many people loathe it in the world. I hope even if Christina controls it for live performances in most places she still occasionally just shrieks it out in concert or something

A tad oversung, but that's to be expected. She did a great job IMO. Looked spectacular, too.

Patti LaBelle and Al Jarreau, for example, and I like that they don't sing every song exactly the same way every time. Anyway, Etta was about expressing emotion. The blues is derived from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, etc. I think people now are so accustomed to autotune and lipsyncing that they lack a frame of reference.

This might be a controversial view, especially in a Christina thread, but in my experience (which is only my experience), people don't actually like over the top melismas and runs that much and say things like 'why can't they just sing the song properly' about most artists. It's almost become like some bad habit that singers seem to think makes them sound more talented the more they do them, but your man on the street doesn't actually like. I mean, all the divas seem to add more melismas when performing live - if it doesn't come that difficulty to them, why don't they include similar takes on record? Or do producers not use them because the public doesn't like it as much as the divas and their fans seem to think?
