(the broadcast I'm listening to hasn't finished yet) I hope that was just a gaffe. I'm already disappointed that we didn't get a full top 100 from Mediabase. That'd just add more insult to injury.

Well, that's what he said. I think he mentioned it early in the show too, but he definitely said that next week we will count down the top 40 hits of the year. I hope so too, I love hearing the top 100 in descending order, all the suspense, etc..

Rick Dees isn't doing a Top 100 of the year either. As far as I've heard, the only one who is this year is "American Top 40 - the 80s."

I wonder why, and what's in store for the following week. Maybe not enough people listen to a show with 100-51? It was the only week without a number one song.

Yeah, that is weird. The first chart after the yearend will be so boring.
Surely they aren't THAT into playing only the BIGGEST most OVERPLAYED songs that risking playing 51-100 would lose that much interest....

We've been spoiled w/ Top 100's. The first 4 yrs of the Show it was either a Top40 or Top80 year ender, but starting in 1974, a top 100 has aired every year except 1979 (top 50) and 1999 (top 40). Allthough you could make an arguement for 1994 when Shadoe only did a top50 and no AT40 year end after that till 1998, but Caseys top 40 did year end top 100's all those years and throughout the 90's.
A new decade, a new direction perhaps?

And last year they had 3 weeks of specials: the top 100 of '09 and the top 40 of the decade (plus 6 extras). Technically that top 40 was the first weekend of 2010.

I'm wondering if maybe playing the lesser hits (100-51) might be too risque on the familiarity front and that is actually the reasoning behind it. If so... it's pretty bad that CHR doesn't want to play those songs without having a lot of their Power Rotation songs amongst the group.

Because heaven forbid someone might have to listen to Secrets or Animal while waiting to hear Airplanes and Dynamite for the 9999999th time. I agree it's really bad if that's the reason.

One one hand, it's annoying that Seacrest once again ignores tradition and is doing whatever, in another attempt to completely alienate the base of the show.
On the other hand, at least he won;t be charting songs from 2007.

I'm pretty sure that's what it is - a lot of new stations this year that are probably "edgy" about playing songs that peaked in the 20s and 30s six months ago

This is becoming a bit of a joke.
First, Mediabase only showed the top 50 songs and now AT40 will only be doing the top 40 songs.
What is going on?!? >:(

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason really is the obsession (read: Clear Channel's obsession) with playing the biggest, most overplayed songs again and again. Just gotta get that extra spin, no matter what it takes...

You'd think they could at least do a top 50, since that's what the second half of the year-end countdown usually is. I just sent an e-mail to AT40 asking (nicely) for an explanation of all this.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason really is the obsession (read: Clear Channel's obsession) with playing the biggest, most overplayed songs again and again. Just gotta get that extra spin, no matter what it takes... Ding ding ding! Yeah, when you look at this in the context of stations allocating more and more plays among fewer and fewer songs, then never letting them go after their peak, it only seems logical that year-end shows are gonna trim the fat further by going from 100 to 50 or 40. Why play songs during a year-end review that listeners probably forgot about months ago when you can just play "Take It Off" and "California Gurls" yet again, then get back to playing the regular top 40 one week sooner? Of course, I agree it's a disappointing move, but it's probably not a surprising one given present circumstances. And you have to give them this: the last couple years, I think one or two songs actually made the top 100 despite never reaching the top 40, at least on AT40. Probably seems a little embarrassing to call a song one of the top songs of the year when it never actually made the chart. I would argue that you fix that by simply shortening it to 80 songs over two weeks, but that's probably just one component that went into this decision. And no one's mentioned that after the year-end show, whenever it ends, shortly into the new year we get Kesha as a guest host. At least they gave us fair warning for that one, so I'll know when to sleep in that particular Sunday.

At least they gave us fair warning for that one, so I'll know when to sleep in that particular Sunday. Very good and very sad point. I love the top 100 because I hear them play those older lesser hits that I've totally forgotten about, which can be good nostalgia at some points. "Teenage Dream," "TiK ToK," "Love the Way You Lie" and all those overplayed massive hits can do without a spin for one week!? On the not making the top 40 point, it was only one song ("21 Guns") last year, and I'm pretty sure none in 2008. Last year, they cut out about 4 songs from each half, which I'm pretty sure they announced, but then just didn't play. "Dead and Gone" comes to mind for that, which was strange as it was so high (#12 I think), but yet that's what they did. They can choose what they feel are the worst songs to play and just skip them altogether if they must, or rather just play 30-60 seconds of those songs so we still get to hear a bit, but not taking 3-4 minutes of "precious" airtime.

Kesha will be hosting the second weekend in January.
Ryan said before he played #1 that Rihanna is now tied with Britney Spears for the most top 40 hits, 22, this century.

You'd think they could at least do a top 50, since that's what the second half of the year-end countdown usually is. I know it's not quite the same, but there will be four optional segments (hopefully from 2010) and possibly 2 to 4 extras. We could be hearing 48 songs of 2010.

We have no confirmation bar what Ryan said, and our theories. I imagine it will be a regular show, except it could be recorded 2 weeks in advance when he "has time." It's possible that it could be guest hosted by a lesser celebrity (than Ke$ha) though.

No I'm pretty sure I know what will happen. If you remember back in 1999, when CK was still host, he only did a Top 40 of 1999 countdown. The week after was an Top 40 of the 90's countdown. My guess is that next week will be a best of the decade 2000-2010 countdown hosted by Ryan. Does anyone know, is Seacrest doing new years with Dick Clark again? Plus, Pink should have the first #1 of 2011 with Raise Your Glass and Rihanna will fall a notch to #2.

Gang, here's the word from Seacrest's people:
Dec 25th-26th - TOP 40 OF THE YEAR, VER 1 (same for both CHR and Hot AC) Jan 1st-2nd - TOP 40 OF THE YEAR, VER 2 (Fresh Material - same for both CHR and Hot AC) Jan. 8th - 9th - CHR & HOT AC: Regular Show with guest host: KESHA
Explanation Ryan used to do a top 100 over two weekends. Apparently, no one wanted to hear songs 50 to 100 . So this year they are doing two Top 40 of the year shows – same songs but different interviews/content. So it is not the same show but each show will feature the same top 40 songs that everyone wants to hear.

So, other than different "filler", we're getting the exact same chart two weeks in a row? That's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard. >:( Explanation Ryan used to do a top 100 over two weekends. Apparently, no one wanted to hear songs 50 to 100 . We'll I did. And, evidently, so did everyone else who responded to this thread. Apparently, we're nobody. So this year they are doing two Top 40 of the year shows – same songs but different interviews/content. So it is not the same show but each show will feature the same top 40 songs that everyone wants to hear. Complete bull, I say. The 100-51 half of the year-ender has always been my favorite part of the show because (a) the rankings are less predictable and (b) most of the songs haven't been played to death a million times over. Is the "average pop radio listener" really that brain dead that they have the hear the exact same overplayed songs over-and-over-and-over again? (Clearly, the answer is "yes", but I'm being rhetorical) (Sorry for the rant, but I needed to vent...still bitter though. )
