If Britney Spears and Lady Gaga were to release their first singles from their upcoming new albums to both radio and iTunes on the same day, who would debut higher on the Hot 100?

Britney will debut higher (most likely at #1), but GaGa will sell more overall.

Prediction: Britney's. I'm thinking Gaga's will last longer.
But, idek. It'll be Gaga's first single after an extremely successful era and radio will be hungry for her, as will music buyers.

Completely depends on the material at hand, but I'm assuming GaGa's will be bigger just because of how huge TF era was. Stranger things have happened though.

I think the material matters more for Gaga than Britney. Britney will sell well, period. Gaga's can be huge and sell more than Britney with the right single coming off such a huge era, but if it's weak she will have more backlash to worry about than Britney. Right now I'd guess Gaga will come out on top, though.

Who will come out on top? Based on past history: Gaga in the long run
But to answer the question of who will debut higher: Britney.

Britney will debut higher (most likely at #1), but GaGa will sell more overall. This sums it up.

Based on past history: ... debut higher: Britney. Really? Besides '3', what's Britney's debut history?

Cause I actually feel the opposite of Danny. I feel like quality of the song matters less in Gaga's case just cause people will still hop on anything she releases. I'm not really familiar with Brit's debut history but I feel like 3 was a rare exception.

'Circus' got to number 3 on the album release, and had radio not picked up 'Womanizer' when it did, it would have had no problem debuting at number 1. She's a digital monster, but then again Gaga is too. I just think Britney will have a bit of an edge there.

As for Hot 100 debuts, 3 was a rare exception but that's only because her recent songs have made a Hot 100 debut based on airplay alone, so...

It depends on when the song leaks (or is released) and when it's released to digital outlets.

Nobody (other than Mack) is saying that Britney will definitely debut @ #1 but there's no question that Britney opens very well digitally. 'Gimme More' 'Womanizer' 'Circus' '3' ...and a slew of album tracks have opened up with strong numbers. It isn't going out on a limb to assume that she will, again, debut with strong numbers.

Sorry for misquoting Mack. :) ...but that's still a big assumption so my point remains. Nobody is really saying that it's likely for HIAM to debut @ #1, but it is likely that this debuts with high digital numbers.

I think the material matters more for Gaga than Britney. Britney will sell well, period. Material matters for both of them - most people in this world aren't stans - they're not gonna waste money on a song they don't like As far as first week numbers though, I'd say Britney (unless the single leaks early and it's terrible)

If Britney's fans can have "3" debut at #1, I'm sure that this lead single will too. I expect them both to do very well, but Gaga will last longer on the chart.

'3' is a great example of a song that, while it was good, wasn't anything new or spectacular but still managed to have a monster debut. The thing is though, I don't think "material" is an object here since both ladies will put out spectacular cuts, I'm sure.

I just think it matters more for Gaga. Britney is notorious for big, front-loaded sales because she has a substantial fan base that will be there when she releases material, basically no matter what. Whether or not that's enough to beat Gaga depends on how good Gaga's single is.

I don't think GaGa's will be an immediately catchy single, whereas Britney's will be. Britney will debut higher, but GaGa's will most likely be more successful in the long run. Both will be massive, but don't underestimate Britney.

Probably Gaga because she's had a HUGE past couple of years, but Britney would be close behind.
