The medley she did in 94 at the AMA's (I Have Nothing, Porgy & Bess + And I'm Telling You...) is one of the greatest vocal performances I've ever heard. No disrespect to JHud but Nippy OWNED it first (of course after Jennifer Holiday)! Maybe I'm biased, but I much prefer Whitney's version even over Jennifer Holliday's. ;) Let's revisit this epic performance again PERFECTION. I remember reading a story about Jennifer Holliday being very upset that Whitney sang "her song" at the AMAs, she was hating big time. An interviewer told Whitney about Jennifer Holliday's remarks about being upset at her singing the song, and Whitney just replied with, "Girl, please." lmao

The Whitney album made a surprise appearance on NME's 500 Greatest Albums list. I say surprise, because it usually doesn't appear on these things, especially over the debut.

-Holds the record for winning the most American Music Awards, twenty-six in total.
-Ranked #61 on VH1's Greatest Women of Rock N Roll
-Her #1 hit "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" was ranked #86 on VH1's 100 Greatest Dance Songs.
-Her powerful rendition of "I Will Always Love You", from The Bodyguard, was ranked #65 on the American Film Institute's list of "The 100 Years of The Greatest Songs".
-Once "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" hit #1 in April of 1988, she was honored as the first artist in history to ever have seven consecutive Billboard number 1 singles. An accomplishment that she still holds to this day.
-Almost received the role of Sondra Huxtable on "The Cosby Show" (1984). The role went to Sabrina Le Beauf, whose theater experience won her the role.

I'm a day late on this, but the classic that is the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack had its 18th anniversary yesterday. Waiting to Exhale: Original Soundtrack Album is a soundtrack for the film of the same name. Released on November 14, 1995, the soundtrack became a huge hit featuring appearances by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Whitney Houston, Brandy, Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, Faith Evans, Patti LaBelle, Mary J. Blige, SWV and TLC. The soundtrack is unique in that it consists of African American female R&B artists only. The album remained at number one on the US Billboard 200 album chart for five weeks and Top R&B Albums chart for ten weeks, going 7× platinum, on Sep 4, 1996. It spawned the #1 hits; "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" and "Let It Flow", the #2 hits "Sittin' Up in My Room" and "Not Gon' Cry" and the #8 hit "Count on Me". ("Exhale (Shoop Shoop)", "Let It Flow" and "Not Gon' Cry" all topped the R&B hits chart.) All songs were written and produced by Babyface, except for "My Funny Valentine". That performance of WHY DOES IT HURT SO BAD is by far my all time favorite performance from her. It was the perfect mix of emotion, vocal, and sweat. She felt it. That was her first attempt at a goodbye to Bobby. LAWD!

Yesterday, the iconic The Bodyguard soundtrack turned 21 :o Happy Anniversary to the best selling soundtrack album of all time! The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album is the soundtrack to the film of the same, released on November 17, 1992. It features songs from Pop/R&B songstress Whitney Houston and other artists, including the #1 hit, "I'll Always Love You". Co-executive produced by Houston and Clive Davis, The Bodyguard has become one of the best-selling albums of all time. The soundtrack was the first album of the Nielsen Soundscan era to sell 1 million copies in a week. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Album of The Year and was certified 17x Platinum on November 1, 1999. It has sold over 45 million copies, making it the best-selling soundtrack and album by a female artist of all time. "I Will Always Love You", a song originally by Dolly Parton, was the biggest hit from the album and of Houston's career. The single spent 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the longest number one single at the time. It was also a huge #1 hit worldwide, topping the charts in almost every territory including the U.K., France, Switzerland, Austria, and Norway. It won the Grammy Award for Record of The Year and Best Female Pop Performance. It is the best-selling single by a female artist, with over 12 million copies sold. "I'm Every Woman", originally by Chaka Khan, peaked at #4 on the Hot 100, #1 on the Dance Club Play Chart, and #5 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop singles chart, becoming bigger than the original. "I Have Nothing" was released as the 3rd single after the huge success of the first two singles. It peaked at #4 on the Hot 100, #4 on the Hot R&B singles, and topped the Hot Contemporary charts. This made her the first artist to have 3 songs inside the top 11 of the Hot 100 chart in the same week of the Soundscan era. It was nominated for many awards, including an Oscar for Best Original Song. "Run To You" was the fourth single. Although not as successful as the first three singles, it reached the Top 40 on the Pop and R&B charts, peaking at #31. It was nominated for Best Original Song along with "I Have Nothing" at the Oscars. "Queen Of The Night" was released as the last single. Co-written by Houston, the song is an uptempo pop track. The song peaked at #36 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. Since it wasn't released as a commercial single, it wasn't eligible to chart on the Hot 100 at the time. The song samples "Dirty Diana" by Michael Jackson. Houston cleaned out the 1992-1993 award season, helping her to become the most awarded female artist of all time. Highlights: •8 American Music Awards (Houston's eight wins tied her with Michael Jackson for the most AMAs ever won in a single year. At that time, she also tied Kenny Rogers on the all-time list with 19 total AMAs.She won her fourth "Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist" award and tied with Olivia Newton-John for the most AMAs won in this category.) •11 Billboard Awards (Houston is the co-holder of the record for the most Billboard Music Awards (11 awards) won in a single year since the award show has been held in 1990 - the awards with marks were honored to her on the show and without marks were not, but her extra #1-ranked-categories on Billboard year-end charts. She became the only artist to grab the top spots of Top Billboard 200 Album, Top R&B Album, Hot 100 Single and Hot R&B Single simultaneously in the history of the charts. She is the only artist to win Top R&B Album three times in the history of Billboard Year-End Charts to date, after Whitney Houston in 1986 and I'm Your Baby Tonight in 1991. In addition, Houston is the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Top Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly "Top Pop Album") on Billboard magazine year-end charts.) •3 Grammy Awards (Houston won her third "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female" award, which is the second record behind Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand, both received the award 5 times.) •5 Japan Gold Disc Awards •5 NAACP Image Awards •20 RIAA Awards •3 Soul Train Music Awards (At the 8th Soul Train Music Awards, Houston received Sammy Davis, Jr. Award for her outstanding achievements in entertainment during 1993.) •5 World Music Awards (Houston holds the record for the most World Music Awards (5 Awards) won in a single year, tied with Michael Jackson.)

Whitney released a lot of albums in November. The "My Love Is Your Love" album also celebrated its 15th anniversary on November 17 this was probably my favorite Whitney era as a fan. I was old enough to experience it as it was happening, I absolutely loved the album, plus I got to see her in concert for the very first time. On November 17,1998, fans ecstatically received Whitney's first non-soundtrack related studio album in eight years, "My Love Is Your Love", which she produced with Clive Davis. "When You Believe", duet with Mariah Carey, was released as the lead single of the album on November 2, 1998. The RIAA certified it Gold for shipments of 500,000 copies on March 24, 1999. Unlike in the United States, the single was a success on the world charts. It reached the top five in the U.K. with 260,000 copies sold. Whitney proved her ability to stay absolutely contemporary with the second single, the #1 R&B/#2 Pop "Heartbreak Hotel" featuring Faith Evans and Kelly Price. The single sold over 1,400,000 copies in the U.S. alone, becoming the third best-selling single of 1999, and was certified Platinum by the RIAA on March 2, 1999. "It's Not Right, But It's Okay" was released as the third single from the album on January 25, 1999. On the Hot 100 chart, the single debuted at number eighty-seven, the issue date of May 8, 1999, and after the regular-length cassette & CD configurations had hit stores, peaked at number four, selling 522,000 copies in the United States. The RIAA certified it Gold on June 29, 1999. It was also successful in the United Kingdom. The single reached the number three on the singles chart, making it her twelfth top ten hits, and sold over 510,000 units, ranked at number twenty-five in the list of UK's best-selling singles in 1999. The title track, "My Love Is Your Love" was the fourth single from the album. It was a massive hit worldwide, becoming another signature song for Whitney. Firstly, the single was released in each country of Europe from June 1999, prior to the United States. Upon release, the song was popular immediately across Europe, and became a bigger hit during her My Love Is Your Love European Tour. In the U.K., it went straight to its peak position, number two, on the singles chart, the issue date of July 3, 1999. The single sold 525,000 copies, becoming the twenty-second best-selling single of 1999. In Germany, it peaked at number two and was certified Platinum for shipments of 500,000 copies by the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI. Likewise, it was a hit in the United States. The song debuted at number eighty-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in September 1999 and peaked at number four in January 2000, becoming her 22nd top ten hit. The single sold 1,100,000 copies and was certified Platinum by the RIAA on December 14, 1999. Worldwide it sold over 3 million copies and became her third best-selling single ever, behind "I Will Always Love You" and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)." "I Learned from the Best" became the fifth and final single to be released from the album on February 22, 2000. The song debuted at number eighty-three on the Hot 100 and peaked at number twenty-seven. According to the Nielsen SoundScan, the single sold 352,000 units in the United States alone. The success of "My Love Is Your Love" kicked off a phenomenal year for Whitney. She stole the show at VH1's second annual "Divas Live 1999", with a performance characterized as "invincible" by Jon Pareles in the New York Times. Sharing the stage with a lineup that included Cher, Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige and others, Whitney emerged as the star. VH1 announced that the show was the highest-rated telecast in its history. At the same time, gold, platinum and multi-platinum album sales were certified in every corner of the globe: Austria, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Spain, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore and more. In late-June, as "It's Not Right But It's Okay" became the 17th Top 5 Pop hit of her career, Whitney commenced a successful world tour playing 16 cities in North America. The tour concluded in Europe in November. At the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards in February 2000, 15 months after the album release, Whitney received her sixth career Grammy, as "It's Not Right But It's Okay" was voted "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance". Winning her first R&B Grammy Award in a category that included Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Faith Evans and Macy Gray was extremely gratifying for Whitney Houston. Released November 17, 1998 Recorded August–October 1998 Genre R&B, soul, pop Length 60:44 Label Arista Producer Babyface, Kelvin Bradshaw, Lloyd"Spec" Turner, Clive Davis, Jerry 'Wonder' Duplessis, Missy Elliott, David Foster, Lauryn Hill, Whitney Houston, Wyclef Jean, Rodney Jerkins With its commercial success, My Love Is Your Love received rave reviews from many critics, regarded as one of her best works. At the 42nd Grammy Awards of 2000, the album got seven nominations including Best R&B Album and two Best R&B Songs, and won one of which, Houston's sixth Grammy Award, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance My Love Is Your Love was present on the Billboard 200 chart for 75 weeks and on Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for 79 weeks, peaking at number seven. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the album 4× platinum on November 1, 1999, for shipments of four million copies. According to the Nielson SoundScan, the album has sold 2,753,000 copies. Across Europe, it was more successful than in United States. In early times of its release, the commercial response for the album was short of expectations. But its sales rose sharply during the European leg of the My Love Is Your Love World Tour, which was the highest grossing arena concert tour of 1999 in the continent, and consequently My Love Is Your Love became the second best-selling album of 1999 in Europe behind Cher's Believe, spending more than one year on the charts in many countries. In the United Kingdom, it reached number four on the albums chart and was certified 3× Platinum for shipments of 900,000 copies of the album by the British Phonographic Industry(BPI). In France, the album peaked at number two on the albums chart, was certified 2× platinum by the Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique (SNEP), selling 700,000 copies. In Germany, it climbed to the number two on the albums chart on its 35th week and has sold more than 670,000 copies. The album reached number one on the albums charts in Austria, Switzerland and Netherlands, and the top five in Belgium, Denmark, Norway and Finland. My Love Is Your Love was certified 4× platinum by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) for shipments of four million copies of the album in Europe. I remember this fierce performance is what helped this single and the album become huge overseas. Everyone was shocked at her new sound and new image. What a great era this was.
Another FANTASTIC and fun performance

I loved TB era, But I was 17 when MLIYL came out, and Bojangles your so right, it was such a great era to be a fan of Whitney. 1999 was a great year! Also the lyrics in MLIYL also went hand in hand with it about to be 2000 (end of the world). I miss this woman so much. I really hope we get to hear some unreleased material. Especially from these 2 eras. I miss her so much

Bojangles - you missed "One Wish - The Holiday Album" - 10th anniversary yesterday. YES!!! Happy 10th Anniversary to "One Wish." I'm so glad she did a holiday album, even as much as I wish she would've recorded a full one around the time she recorded "Do You Hear What I Hear" or even released one in 1994 when The Bodyguard era was kind of fading away, I'm still glad she released one nontheless. The album featured the single "One Wish (for Christmas)", which reached the top twenty on Billboard's U.S. Adult Contemporary chart. The album spent six weeks on the Billboard 200 and as of January 2013 it had sold over 546,000 copies to date and certified Gold. Whitney Houston's first collection of seasonal music, "One Wish - The Holiday Album," will be released Nov. 18 via Arista. The 11-track set includes a duet with her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, on "Little Drummer Boy," and collaborations with producers Troy Taylor, Gordon Chambers and Barry J. Eastmond. Mervyn Warren, who previously worked with Houston on the 1996 soundtrack "The Preacher's Wife," produced eight cuts. "I've wanted to do an album of holiday songs for some time," Houston says in a statement. "I think these are some of the most beautiful songs ever written about such a wonderful time of year and I hope they appeal to everyone."Here is the "One Wish" track list: "Deck the Halls"/"Silent Night" "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" "Little Drummer Boy" featuring Bobbi Kristina Brown "Cantique De Noel (O Holy Night)" "One Wish (For Christmas)" "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" "I'll Be Home for Christmas" "The First Noel" "O Come O Come Emanuel" "Joy to the World" "Who Would Imagine a King" Personally, my absolute favorite 'new' song on that album (I say new because they included Joy To The World and Who Would Imagine A King) is "O Come O Come Emanuel" her vocals are amazing, especially during a time that wasn't so great for her, and the acapella sounding production is so haunting and beautiful Next up would be "Little Drummer Boy", duet with then 10 year old Bobbi Kristina. Love Love LOVE this one! It's fun, adorable, and also some great production "O Holy Night" would be my next favorite. The dark & haunting production combined with her vocals and lower register is enough to give you the chills

I love One Wish. It's one of the few holiday albums I listen to every year. Love that 'Who Would Imagine a King' and 'Joy To The World' were included.
'Do You Hear What I Hear?' is just EPIC.

Some of the new OW tracks would have been amazing when she was at her vocal peak. But, I do love her rendition of "O Holy Night," especially the production.
I also love that WWIAK and JTTW were included. :) "Do You Hear What I Hear" would have been a great addition, as well, but understandable given it's on A Very Special Christmas.

I'm not a big fan of O HOLY NIGHT or I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS but I love the rest! "Noel," the title track, "Emanuel," and DTH/SN are classics in my home!
