Wow! She really pumps them out! I'm all for it though :) I'm sure I'll love it, can't wait! She signed a 7 album deal right. Maybe she is just rushing out of the contract. At this point, she's probably re-negotiated her contract several times. Her advances per album are probably quite impressive. Keep churning out the hits, and selling that coconut water girl!

I love how some people think because they're sick of Rihanna that it's a mistake for her to release an album a year. Her last album scored 4 Top 10s, 3 #1s, and put her in a league with Madonna, Janet, Whitney, and Mariah in terms of #1s. It also had very solid global sales. So clearly most people aren't as sick of her as you may be.

I wonder what the direction of the album will be. I wish it's called Louder and is a full-on dance album. I'm predicting 500k debut week in the US and over a million worldwide if the lead single is a monster (which will most likely be).

I hope she doesn't go and do a full on dance album. The dominance of dance music has already been significantly attenuated since a year or so ago. She needs to be ahead of the curve.

Yeah, I don't exect a huge debut from her, she'll probably sell over time. Hopefully she can crack 300k this time.

All of her Cd openings have progressed every release. Hopefully this will match LOUD or higher.

I'm all for new music from her, but there seems to be so much overlap going on. I mean, at least finish your tour. The tour supporting RR became a push for Loud towards the end. If she keeps churning them out like this it's gonna be all the weirder when she, god forbid, takes a break. A couple of months isn't gonna kill her is it?? She's on a complete roll (and has been for years) so I'm not against consistent releases, but I'm beginning to lose track. No sooner has she released one album, we seem to get rumours about her next. Calm your shit RiRi.

She'll open the same as she always does in the US, but her opening week there has never been relevant to how successful she is.
Justjared Rihanna: New Album This Fall, First Single Will Surprise
Rihanna lands at the airport on Friday (September 16) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The 23-year-old pop star is in town for three concerts in the South American country before she heads to Ireland for some more shows.
Ri recently revealed some exciting news - her new album is due this fall!
“Rihanna’s been really busy touring,” a source tells JustJared.com. “But she’s so excited to release new songs. Her first single is going to surprise a few people. It’s definitely left of center.”
Asked by a fan on Twitter if she would take some time off, Ri replied, “Yes, when I’m tired!!!”

She needs to be ahead of the curve. This is exactly what made her so popular. Before there was Gaga, Rihanna was the edgy, hip, stylish pop star pushing Pop in a new direction. "SOS," "Don't Stop The Music," "Disturbia," etc were all very progressive songs which were way ahead of the dance curve and "Umbrella" spawned its own replicates and was extremely fresh at the time. People were worried about "Don't Stop The Music" flopping for being too "euro" and "dancey" - she was essentially one of the first major pop stars to bring the dance-pop craze to the forefront. It made her exciting and while Loud was hugely successful, I felt like it lacked that progressive edge a bit, sound-wise. I hope she takes us in a new unexpected direction with the next album because that's what she did best.

^^ I agree to an extent... Loud feels like the album that should have followed GGGB. RR is still a surprising listen (in a good way). I doubt her opening week numbers will be that different to previous. If she couldn't hit big after OG and WMN, when will she ever? Massive, massive songs.

Opening numbers will be as always: above-average but nothing spectacular.
She stays a singles artist.

She stays a singles artist. Loud has sold about 1.5 million in under a year in the US, and over 5 million worldwide and remains in the top 20. (Must note that not even a year prior she had an album go platinum and over 3 million worldwide.) The opening week does not define her. Compare her album sells to the majority of her peers and well....

Loud is one record, one that's about to die off pretty quickly if she's about to move along. People buy her records, sure, but looking at how her sales trend, people are clearly more interested in her singles by a substantial amount than the record as a whole. I simply find it odd that, as headofthepack pointed out, even after 'Only Girl' and 'What's My Name' her opening numbers failed to trend heavily upwards, hence why I highlighted opening sales. Either way, that's just how I look at it. Feel free to disagree!

Compared to her peers, her numbers aren't above average. They're average.

I doubt Rihanna's going dance again. It's already on its way out and I'm sure even dance queen GaGa will take a new direction for her next LP.
I also think Rihanna is rushing to get out of her 6 album contract so that she can get a better deal. With the songwriting bootcamp IDJ employs prior to each album a quick release is possible.

Loud is one record, one that's about to die off pretty quickly if she's about to move along. Well she could probably milk Loud more if she wished. It has continued to sell very well since it was released. But regardless, "dying off" with approximately 5.5-6 million albums sold is something that peers like Britney and Beyonce's latest sell half of (if that), and Katy and Lady Gaga are falling in the same bracket. Well that can applied to every pop star with the exception of Adele, no? And i'll never get the logic in applauding mediocrely performing albums, because their singles did even more poorly. It's just backwards. Right, but here we are near the end of the album's run, and we've seen that the album has sold multiple times over that. Therefore, highlighting the opening sales seems irrelevant. Particularly, as you pointed out her biggest singles came at the beginning of the era. If she was just shifting a few units on the back of singles, wouldn't she have had the majority of her numbers from the opening week? There is a disconnect with her opening numbers in the US to her popularity, but "singles artist" is not the correct term. What is causing it? I'm not positive, but personally I think her rate of releases has something to do with it. HOWEVER, while some may see that as a fault, from a business perspective selling 4-5 million albums a year with smash singles > releasing once every 2-3 years and doing almost the same.

If the album is released a week before Xmas or the week of Xmas, she might match these numbers.

This really doesn't have much to do with my point though. And, as Guy pointed out, she's not really doing that much better. and where was I saying Rihanna is the only singles artist out there? Hell, even Brit's proving to be one in this current climate. I'm just amused that her fans seem to think this is such a truly terrible label. not really. If she's as huge here as people seem to label her then it shouldn't be a problem to have substantial opening numbers, particularly after the promo and success of her leading singles. I really never argued this. I simply said her singles receive more attention that the actual albums. I was never trying to say that the disconnect is a substantial argument alone for her being a "singles artist," of course I could see why it did. Rihanna has a celebrity about her that people enjoy, yet I could guess they simply prefer the celebrity to the actual artist. Loud is proving an exception to this but still doesn't redefine her entire career.

Nearly a year later after it's at 1.5 million and we're talking about a 207k opening week? Come on now.
Rihanna is doing her thing. Her album and single sales are doing well. Give her credit.

Rihanna is a consistent seller, she is not known to have big debuts. I mean, I will never understand why people try to discredit her for that, since I'd rather sell over time than start selling big and going nowhere. You have to take a close look at her numbers to see that she has never opened with more than 200k but always ends up selling above 1kk (with the exception of MOTS, but whatever, she wasn't Rihanna then). If that's not impressive, than I guess we have different definitions for the word. I mean, look at Lady Gaga (love her to bits, hope to not cause a war here) she opened with 1kk but is having trouble reaching 2kk.

I really hope they can release it the week of Black Friday or the week after. I want her to get that #1 album and strong sales. Also, it is amazing how she can consistently put out records and yet I still don't consider her too overexposed or tire of her. I do think she should take a little break after this era, though. I imagine an October single release late November/Early december album release.
