Can anyone give me an example of a song that turned into a hit using the strategy of working small markets before sending it for adds at major stations? Randy Travis "Three Wooden Crosses." FYI: this is #18 on this week's Music Row chart after just 9 weeks. It's not Billboard or Aircheck, but 1700 spins from 92 stations is still very good. www.musicrow.com/charts/chart/

I'm sure the label knows what they are doing. So I'm not worried, this is her best single released. And I can't wait to hear it every time I turn on the radio..

I think they've handled things as good as they can so far. "Tough" underperformed, and most labels wouldn't even put the album out if the lead single hadn't gone top 20. So I don't quite understand the whole "label is screwing Kellie over" argument. They're working this song to secondary radio first, because ultimately, it probably would've performed the same or worse than "Tough" did. They have to be very careful...they want this to be a hit so I feel like they're really investing in it. It's top 30 on the Indicator chart, ahead of labelmate Casey James and also ahead of songs like Gloriana's latest. And it's #20 on the Music Row chart. If it continues to do well, it will likely go to major radio stations.
The album's not selling well and it's not going to sell well unless they get a hit. And to me, if they had just thrown a song out there after "Tough", it would've have done much regardless of quality. She doesn't have the momentum. So to me, it would seem as if that's what they're trying to do...build her momentum by starting with secondary radio. Sort of a "grassroots movement" with this, by starting small and working up.

^ This. Can ya'll stop bashing the label for not just throwing a single out there and hoping that it doesn't flop? Thanks. I love the reference to "Three Wooden Crosses." If this were to end up like that, I will be very pleased.

I think the last two posts are right. It's a difficult task for the label when they have no margin of error. They probably see this as Kellie's last chance -- maybe that's too dramatic but if this one fails, the path to big album sales gets very complicated and very difficult -- so they want to work it carefully.
Throwing a song out there and praying would be the worst move. There's no guarantee that any move would work, but I think they have to plan carefully and work really hard to set this one up for a slow, steady run to the top 10. There's some irony here in that her material has improved so much -- but that doesn't translate into a guarantee of commercial success, so they still have to tiptoe.
Nobody ever got rich by assuming that high-quality material guarantees success. You need an established base, something along the lines of what keeps Alison Krauss and Union Station commercially viable. Pickler doesn't have that yet.

Her label is definitely doing plenty for her if all these television appearances are any indication. I hope she sings 100 Proof as well, and I'm hoping that they start pushing this to the big radio markets soon, but I can understand the wait and I concede that it is probably the best way of approaching the single, since 100 Proof is the type of song that needs the special attention if they want to tap its full potential. That said, I think it could be huge for her, so I've got my fingers crossed that ends up happening.

The song took a hit this week on both Billboard's Indicator and MB's Acticator (lost quite a bit of points here). So hopefully she can make some of that up next week.
I try and request this song but everytime I do they play her older stuff, even "Tough." And I live at her hometown stations. So if they aren't playing "100" who is? They usually are the first to add her for anything.

They usually are the first to add her for anything. Probably because the main stations on the reporting panels haven't been sent the song. Yeah, they could get a copy of it probably, but the hometown stations probably won't play it because if they were the only ones doing so, and it somehow made the 50's of the main chart, it wouldn't do much and that wouldn't look good (people would think it flopped). HERE is a list of the Mediabase-monitored stations playing "100 Proof". These stations are all on the Country Aircheck Activator panel, and as you can see, they are small in market size.

That link takes me to Taylor Swift "Safe and Sound" but I know how to find it on there. Taylor's song was actually the last thing I looked up so my tracking cookies took me to her song. I am always on that site. Thanks tho.

I can't seem to figure out how to work that link that you posted, jhomes87. ???
I do know there's a station that I get in the Wichita area that plays 100 Proof, because I've heard it twice. I love that!

Very weird. It works fine for me. Well, if you want to see it, from the Add Board page, you have to click up top in the yellow where it says "Switch to Activator Reporter Mode", and then in the drop box (top left), change the week to 3/7/12 (that's last week, and the last week Kellie got an add), and then scroll down 'til you find "100 Proof". Click on the "18" in the far right column (Total Historic Adds) and it should show you the 18 Mediabase Activator stations that have added the song. There aren't any Wichita stations there, but it could be that the song got a spin on a bigger station there, or a smaller one which isn't monitored. If it did get spins on a bigger station (from the main MB or BB panel), it's probably not getting near enough to come anywhere close to charting.

I hope so. The label is frustrating me so much right now. I listened to both her older albums this week and can honestly say 100 Proof is her strongest, most cohesive album overall yet.

That article says that Kellie's already had 1 hit single from her current album...good for her...but I didn't know that. That being the case then, what's the hold up on putting her songs on the bigger stations?
Somewhat related, but how high on the charts does a single have to get before it's declared a hit?

Somewhat related, but how high on the charts does a single have to get before it's declared a hit? It's subjective. For someone like Brad Paisley or Keith Urban, anything short of the top 5 will likely be considered a dissapointment. Kellie has never had a top 5 hit, and while I'm sure they wanted "Tough" to do better, it at least made the top 30 and now I think they want to do better, so they're setting up the groundwork by pushing "100 Proof" to smaller stations first. Really, the term "hit" can mean anything. Some artists/labels might call anything that goes top 20 a "hit". But often times the word is just used to describe a song...ie, song A was a top 20 hit, but song B was only a top 50 hit.

^ Pretty much this. Especially the last part. 'Hit' is often just used as a way to describe where a song peaked, so they can pretty much get away with calling anything a hit if they want to. And like jhomes said, Kellie Pickler hasn't had a lot of big hits yet, so a Top 30 hit (although tied w/ MMFILA for her lowest chart finish) is still not seen as quite the failure it would be for another artist of a higher rate of success.

hopefully. I'm rooting for a top 10 or even better. I'm loving this more traditional side of her. Although "Tough" did never got into me, Where's Tammy Wynette and Stop Cheatin On Me and this are wonderfully performed tracks.

Very glad to see this get an adds date. I had a feeling we may be able to hear this over the summer, so hopefully we will. I know I'll hear it a bunch since I'm not far from Kellie's hometown. I'd also prefer to see a slower climb up the charts peaking in maybe August or September. The adds date really isn't that far away, now that I think of it.

Yes! I'm so glad they finally sent it out to radio. It's about time! I wish this song would smash, but I hope it at the last gets Top 20. This song is too good not to!
