it just occurred to me that many of you may not know who is pictured in my current avatar...any guesses? Danny Elfman. The song "Pain" appears on Boi ngo.

yup, of course he's become so successful with The Simpsons & his soundtrack work that most people aren't familiar with the band where he got his start Interesting enough, I know nothing about his work on Simpsons music, but I know he did soundtracks for Tim Burton's movies. Oingo Boingo was pretty much a discription of KROQ in the 80's. Can you imagine if he released "Little Girls" in this day and age? One of KROQ;s most played songs of 1981?

Elfman only did the main theme for The Simpsons, though his Oingo Boingo bandmate Richard Gibbs did the in-show music during the first season.

Going back to the discussion on the last page...
My taste in music is largely defined from the oldies (late '50s to early '70s) my mom played in the car when I was a kid, the grunge and mid-90s alt sounds I listened to in middle school (along with some dance and pop stuff), and the indie-leaning music I got into in college. Whereas my nu-metal phase in high school was just that - a phase. Although I do maintain an affection for the '90s/early 2000s hip-hop I also listened to during those years, as well as a few select bands like Incubus and System of a Down.

Found this to be pretty interesting considering this band.
I would change the name to "6 reasons why I have lost interest in 30 Seconds to Mars". Comments?

I agreed with most of what Jon mentioned. I have seen them live two or three times and in each show, Jared did go up on the roof of the amphitheatre and sing like it was some amazing thing. A lot of the fans adored it and screamed at the top of their lungs while they could have played a couple of other songs during that time.
I happen to like the newer songs. Maybe not as much as in the past, but I give them credit them for trying new sounds. I do think from what I've seen in interviews and such that Jared can be kind of a dick. They're not one of my favorite bands by any means, but I am looking forward to hearing their new material in some way.

He will probably try to Walk on Water, instead of using that time to play a couple of other songs?

I've heard a lot of sexual assault allegations about Jared Leto. Not sure if they're true or not but they certainly paint him in a different light.

This band has decided to adopt TOAD"S rejected sound. Seriously is this guy lipsyncing to Tyler? I do like the song tho.

So I was listening to WSFS for the first time in like three months on Friday, and within a span of 30 minutes, they played "Counting Stars" by OneRepublic and "Don't You Worry Child" by Swedish House Mafia. What the actual f**k? I guess the former has the excuse of being vaguely rockish and charting on a rock format (AAA, though that still shouldn't really excuse it), but that excuse does not apply at all to the latter.
Are there any other Alt stations that even play these songs as recurrents?

What the actual f**k? There might be a reason for this. Were you listening in the evening/night time on Friday? I know at that time, they don't play their regular playlist then and have some DJ remix everything where it's just a portion of each song. I've heard "Counting Stars" on there during regular hours, but "Don't You Worry Child?" That's totally out of nowhere.

According to it's leaders on AllAccess, KYRK in Corpus Cristi plays Counting Stars as well.

I don't have a problem with some dance music being played on Alt radio, but of course they picked the biggest pop hit dance song from Swedish House Mafia. But I think artists like deadmau5, Kaskade, Above & Beyond and Skrillex have songs that can fit the format well.

Yeah I don't either -- there's a reason I wasn't opposed to Sofi Tucker and Odesza charting on alt, at least in the bottom half. Hell, I'm not even opposed to songs like Counting Stars being played as a recurrent occasionally, it has a prominent guitar line and doesn't sound too far off from something that would have charted 5ish years ago. But there's 0 alternative about DYWC, and unless it's during a special program or it was on one of those weird alt-pop fusion stations then there's no excuse for playing it.

Go96 plays Counting Stars...I completely missed it when it was new & I'm really liking it. This station used to play a lot of pop stuff too (Gnash, Jon Bellion) but they have started to move away from that & toward a more typical Alt sound (although they do still play Sofie Tukker)

I still think OneRepublic's music fits Alt (and AAA for that matter, where they have done well).
In an alternate universe, had "Stop and Stare" been the lead single and it did well on rock formats, then "Apologize" came in, I think they would be having a healthy career on Alt radio.

I've heard "Counting Stars" on there during regular hours, but "Don't You Worry Child?" That's totally out of nowhere. Nope, this all happened at about 4 PM. Here's the playlist for that hour as proof: No Roots Alice Merton 5:01 PM
Don't You Worry Child (feat. John Martin) Swedish House Mafia 4:57 PM
Thought Contagion Muse 4:54 PM
Insane in the Brain Cypress Hill 4:50 PM
SOBER UP AJR [F: RIVERS CUOMO] 4:46 PM
You Worry Me Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats 4:38 PM
Viva La Vida Coldplay 4:34 PM
Feel It Still Portugal. The Man 4:32 PM
Say It Ain't So Weezer 4:27 PM
Best Friend Sofi Tukker 4:24 PM
COUNTING STARS One Republic 4:20 PM
Doubt Joywave 4:11 PM
My Friends Over You New Found Glory 4:07 PM
Wish I Knew You The Revivalists 4:02 PM
Dumb Nirvana 4:00 PM
(For the record, I'm not quite opposed to Alt playing electronic music either, but it has to fit the format in some way - and DYWC does not fit at all. As for "Counting Stars", it just feels way too polished and poppy to me to have any place on Alternative. Then again, I do feel like that applies to plenty of stuff that has had success on Alt...)

In an alternate universe, had "Stop and Stare" been the lead single and it did well on rock formats, then "Apologize" came in, I think they would be having a healthy career on Alt radio. I suppose you could make an arguement for that applying to many of the mid 2000s soft rock acts like One Republic, Gavin DeGraw, The Script, John Mayer, etc. On one hand they really aren't too far off sonically from alt staples like Imagine Dragons or Coldplay sonically, but their production is certainly poppier and most of those acts ended up going in a poppier direction down the road to better fit in with their target formats (though you could argue it's a chicken and the egg type thing where they would've made a point to sound more alternative if they were aiming to chart on that format). Imo for acts like those it's easiest to just go on a case by case basis. As I said before, I wouldn't have a problem with Counting Stars charting in the lower half of alt, but there's nothing alternative about Good Life or If I Lose Myself. Hell, while the situation you mentioned could very well have happened, I would argue that Timberland's production on Apologize makes it far too poppy for alt.

So whatever happened with Incubus releasing a second single? I thought "State of the Art" was decent enough, but oh well.

Would anyone be interested if I posted the new rock-related album releases every Friday? I'm not sure if that violates any terms of the board or not.
I figure there's a lot of artists out there that either never make it to radio or don't get played on it anymore that many of us would be interested in new music from. I can also include similar artists to each to see if they look appealing to check out.

Alrighty, so I guess with the amount of "likes" my previous post received, enough of you want me to post the new album releases every Friday. Again, if this is not allowed, mods can feel free to delete my post. If there are any others that I left out and you think I should have included, definitely post them below! It's a pretty light day in terms of new releases. March 30, 2018 New Album Releases - Echosmith - "Inside a Dream"
(similar to Smallpools, Misterwives, Bleachers, Atlas Genius, etc) - Escape The Fate - "I Am Human"
(similar to Falling in Reverse, Eyes Set To Kill, Black Veil Brides, Atreyu, etc) - Frankie Cosmos - "Vessel"
(similar to Car Seat Headrest, Adult Mom, (Sandy) Alex G, etc) - Kate Nash - "Yesterday Was Forever"
(similar to Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, Ida Maria, etc) - Mount Eerie - "Now Only"
(similar to Sun Kil Moon, Xiu Xiu, Car Seat Headrest, etc) - The Republic of Wolves - "Shrine"
(similar to Manchester Orchestra, As Tall As Lions, All Get Out etc) - The Vaccines - "Combat Sports"
(similar to Kaiser Chiefs, The Fratellis, Bombay Bicycle Club, etc) - The Voidz (formerly Julian Casablancas + The Voids) - "Virtue"
(similar to Car Seat Headrest, Grizzly Bear, CRX, etc)

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus apparently have a new album out today too called "The Awakening."
I've always been a big fan of theirs, so this gets me super excited to listen to in the near future.

So instead of doing a ranking of 2010s alternative singles like I originally planned, I plan to review them one by one. (I have decided to include first listens) The thread for the reviews can be found here, and if you want to see how they stack up so fat, watch out for this post here.
