This negative view of Adam excuse would make more sense, but not much, if some of the stations that added the song and gave it a fair shot, had not dropped the song or considerably reduced its spins. Of course we'd also have to ignore that stations played both Whataya Want From Me and If I Had You.

^ WWFM would have done considerably better (easily top 5, maybe #1) if another artist's name had been attached to it. It took months to even take off and only then barely scraped #10 H100.
It's no secret that Adam has been treated differently at radio than most of his peers and that many PDs have expressed open dislike for him and an unwillingness to add his songs.

Didn't Adam have radio support during the FYE era? what happened that created a negative view of him afterwards? He had massive promo after idol, and fye sold well. Even then he had great radio support only for wwfm. iihy didn't get the same response. There were no other singles, and he waited 2.5 yrs between albums. His label tried to start the new era with btikm and almost no promotion. Trespassing in turn had little promo and no single, and has not sold well. None of that is helping ncoe. The gap was not 2.5 years between singles, and this is what counts in terms of keeping his name in people mind. There was only a little more than a year between the end of IIHY and BTKIM. If BTKIM had been a good single, it would have taken off anyway , may be just a bit more slowly, and if NCOE had been a good single, it would have saved the era. But it wasn't to be

I don't know if I agree about the negative view thing. I still feel it comes down to the music. The song itself sounds like something that would be played on the radio but honestly it's really not that good of a song, it feels like they went down a checklist. Dr. Luke check, Bruno Mars check, Uptempo check, dubstep check. Imo, the song is just ok.
Personally I listened to the album but my feeling is while there is quality in the album it's not instant or doesn't have a wide appeal, there doesn't feel like there is hit material on it. Maybe it's the album Adam wanted to make and that his direct fan base wanted but as someone who is a casual fan I can't say that I liked the album much.
People can say it's because of his image and what not but I believe that it has more to do with the music. He did get promo and financial support, maybe not Gaga levels but certainly more than enough to launch a single and album. The hype from his idol season is gone and radio in general doesn't want idols taking over, remember he was competing with Kelly, Carrie, Haley R, Stefano, P2, and Kris Allen.

We can pretend that isn't a factor and his detractors will tell you his songs suck but a song sucking is subjective. For every song someone thinks is a smash there is someone who'll tell you the song sucks. People can't buy what they don't hear. It's up to radio if they want to play him or not. They are the ones that make or break an artist. Adam got radio play his first time out because he just came of Idol and had the Idol buzz. They do that for all Idols coming off the show but come second era they don't want the market saturated with Idols.

He was a new unproven artist, and still is, there aren't a lot of new artists who will have their debut single race up the charts, or go top five. It did go top three on Hot AC, which makes more sense than it going top five on pop. Hot AC was a much better fit for the song, which is why it continues to to be played so much on that format, even though PDs hate Adam.

It's just weird to me bc all the buzz leading up to this album was positive...I recall several label people, journalists, and radio dj's tweetin' how awesome the new music sounded. Rolling Stone even went as far as to describe some songs as "Radio Gold" Really thought this era would be the one to break him considering how pop friendly the material is...I believe a conscience effort was made to make songs that sounds like hits. I agree that the single choices have been awful and "NCOE" is way to calculated.

It's a tough business anytime you receive success you will have fans and detractors. There we're a lot of factors contributing to his decline this era I don't think it can be isolated to sexual preference.

Considering no openly gay man has EVER successfully launched a pop career in the US before Adam, it's truly insane to say that it has not had an impact -- and likely been a detriment -- on his ability to succeed. P.S. Radio PDs are notoriously known as an "old boys club" with misogynistic and homophobic undertones and overtones.

What i'm saying is that this isn't black or white, of course him being gay has had some impact but it's not what stopped him from being a bigger star, not even remotely. There are so many other contributing factors that I don't think you can isolate one.

A few weeks back NCOE was played on a radio station and someone called and said if they ever play that male who is into other males again they'll stop listening to them. The general media is pretty liberal and it's why Adam gets support from them there but radio is run by conservatives who have to answer to their advertisers. Just take a look under Carrie's comments coming out for gay marriage recent articles to get a sense of the pulse of America out there. Then you have acts like Scissor Sisters and Gossip and Sam Sparro who are all getting critical acclaim for their albums and have music that fits radio but yet....

While that may be valid to a point, it's a go-to reason to bemoan and excuse the fact that Adam's isn't more successful. If he came out with better material and/or which is not connected to the tired glam image he projects, then he'd be more successful. But as it is, he isn't and it isn't just because he's gay.

He hasn't projected a glam image at all this era. He's tone down his look/image this time around. I guess to try to appeal more mainstream. Which saddens me because if he isn't going to get radio play he needs to go back to his IDGF self. It's one of the reasons why I am a fan of his. If I wanted the typical MOR Idol I would have opt for that. I kind of miss the old Adam. I wouldn't care if he doesn't get radio play. Most artists I listen to don't.

Honestly I don't want this Adam or FYE Adam. If he had modeled his career after "Mad World" Adam (his best performance ever to this day) he would be in a much better place success-wise.

Is MJ's website broken or something? Adam should be releasing songs like Mad World? ??? We have someone that hasn't posted on this website since 2009 complaining that Adam's new album is Glam Rock? Have you even listen to Trespassing? ??? I'm not any kind of expert but it sounds like a few people that posted today don't even listen to current CHR radio? ------------------------- There was 3 adds this week. The general media is pretty liberal and it's why Adam gets support from them there but radio is run by conservatives who have to answer to their advertisers. And, for that matter, so too are the two biggest radio companies - Clear Channel and Cumulus - each in different shades (of conservatism, that is). RCA has kind of struck me as sort of a label counterpart to Cumulus's kind of conservatism, though. Cumulus seems to be the type who will take forever to add different given tracks to their stations unless they're absolutely wow-ed by them. Worst case scenario is, there's songs that they will never add ever. Same kind of story with RCA...unless there's a given artist and/or album that they're absolutely all for supporting, they'll give at best minimum support.

So what? You glossed over the most important part, the station played his song, and they aren't going to stop playing it because of one idiot.
Adam was gay three years ago too, and he still sold more than 800,000 albums. Not everyone will like him, but that's true for every act. Some people's reasons for not liking him are ignorant, but that's also true for a lot of musical acts. DJs will make fun of him, but DJs make fun of all artists. You are not going to listen to a radio show and not hear a dj slamming some artist.

The song's not very catchy and the tone of his high register is very polarizing. BTIKM had the same problem. That's all there is to it. The "never close our eeeeeeey-eeeeeeeeeyes" and the "better than I know myseeeeeeeee-eeeee-eeeeeelf" make some people switch the station. And PD's want to avoid playing music that has that effect. He has to adapt his voice, tone it down, like WWFM. In a way he did that on Trespassing/Cuckoo... I hope he gets one last chance to make it. I feel like the material is there, the album is more than good enough.

It's pointless to have this serious discussion here because Idol fans who are fans of others will not see the obvious. All your going to hear is "He's had the most promo than any other Idol in existence and if some other idols, that shall not be named got 1/10 of his promo they would be mega superstars and every artists get mocked by DJs for being gay not just Adam . No.big.deal.

MJ's and Idol fans did a good job running Adam fans of the board. Her comments went from 500+ to 20-30+ for Idols. Those other Idols are real popular there. Now that there aren't many Adam fans they are searching for him elsewhere

Confused. All I learned from that response is that you don't have an explanation for how your station playing Adam's song goes along with the argument that program directors hate Adam, so they won't play his music.

I think Adam suffers from the same typical sophomore Idol problem - he was never given the chance to figure out what sound works for him or what direction he wants to go in and was therefore never able to carve out an audience other than his Idol fans. His sexuality may play some part but I don't think it's the only factor.

WWFM did not take months to take off on POP at all, and although it started slowly on HAC, it is not the only song for which the push is concentrated on only one format initially. In the end the slow start on HAC didn't matter since it did very well and reached #2. And I don't know how we can imply from the fact that the song just reached #10 that it was Adam sexuality that held it back, unless we assume that Adam has a inbuilt right to have top 5 singles. It may be the case that some DJs have made anti-gay comments, but a few don't make a rule, and it does not explain why radio played WWFM and IIHY, and not the songs from the new era. Why would the HAC stations in particular, who played WWFM for a very long time, and may still have been playing it when BTIKM was launched, decide that they now hate Adam?

Lambert's singles were just not good enough to break through this cycle on radio. Spinning and all this reaching for an answer other than the songs sucked feels desperate. Lambert is in the same boat as everyone else trying to get establish. Maybe that bit of humble pie is a bit much for his fans to swallow. Welcome to reality. He's dead on radio, another single would be a waste of time. This era will go down as a pretty visible flop. Better luck next era for him.
