I don't post here very often, but this is one of my favorite Carrie songs since perhaps her debut (eek!) and I really hope Country welcomes it. I would love to see this connect and become one of her "classics"

I have to say, it's not my favorite song from the album, two black cadillacs holds that position, but I'm ^^in agreement, this song will explode on country Radio

I like this song, voice is awesome as always, but gosh this isn't even close to country music.

That seems so far away. That would not have bothered me so much if it wasn't for the dang video teaser. I wanna see it now.

By adding the tornado to the video, I really hope that what happened to Pam Tillis' "I Was Blown Away" in the 90's doesn't happen to this song.

That was completely different in Pam's situation. The OKC bombing had just happened and she decided to pull "I was blown away" out of rotation just inside the top 20 so the line of the song wouldn't offend any sensitive listeners. The thing is Pam's song was a love song. She then replaced it with the beautiful "In Between Dances," the 5th single at that point from her "Sweethearts Dance" album.

The adds date doesn't seem far away to me; it'll give time for Good Girl's airplay to decrease properly before Blown Away takes over.

It will surely chart in the next couple weeks, and before the adds date. Unfortunately, I doubt we get the music video before the adds date, so we will probably have to wait for that a little longer than I hoped. I bet the video will come out fairly soon after the adds date.

Country radio has always been sensitive, and in some cases overly sensitive in adjusting station playlists to current events, and sometimes very dramatically.
The most dramatic example that I know of came in February of 2003; Mark Willis's '19 Something' had been #1 at R&R for 5 weeks, but lost 600+ spins in a single week after the Columbia disaster of February 1st, 2003, enabling Terri Clark to rise to #1 for one week with 'I Just Wanna Be Mad'.
'19 Something' bounced back spinswise and returned to #1 for a sixth & final week at #1 the following week before 'The Baby' replaced it in the penthouse, and it went on to finish #1 for the year.

For another example, Sara Evans' "Coalmine" stalled out at #37 on the country charts because of an unfortunately-timed coalmine disaster. I recall looking up the chart run for the song and I believe that it started out quite strong, and probably would've been another Top 10 hit for her like the two singles before it.
That's the obvious downside to having a genre relying so heavily on "real" stories, people, events, etc. I don't think Carrie is going to have to worry about any chart-stopping consequences with this song though, luckily for us.

Lets just hope we have no Category 4 or 5 Hurricane hit this year. I know this song is about a tornado, but "Blown away" could offend sensitive ears at the wrong time. Just think that this song been out when Katrina hit New Orleans what coulda happened to it.

Burned Like A Rocket just became Billy Joe Royal's first top ten hit in 1986 when the space shuttle Challenger exploded.

I definitely think the fact that many families have been devastated by a tornado and many have lost loved ones from such storms may come back and bite this single, but I wouldn't wish it to. I think Two Black Cadillacs is a superior song and single and paints the villain in a much darker light than a "mean old mister," which makes it easier to feel he got what he deserved.
I understand the VIDEO to this song will expand on the alcohol and I guess abuse hinted in the song, but the overall lyrics are pretty vague and helping him seek rehab may have been a smarter move than letting your father die in a storm.

Austin--I'm 100% with you.
'Two Black Cadillacs' is the one song on this CD that I've played over and over, and far more than any other song on this CD, and it gets my vote as the best song she's recorded to date.
Similarly, I also played the heck out of the flamethrowin' 'Songs Like This' from 'Play On', and I was really disappointed that it never became a single.
I also agree that 'Blown Away' isn't really a country single, but given the extremely wide range of music which somehow makes it onto country radio, and has for several years (Jon Bon Jovi & Jennifer Nettles anyone?), none of us should be surprised.
That said, neither myself nor anyone else should any more 'expect' Ms. Underwood to approach the quality and/or levels of respect at the format as it comes to making 'traditional' country music to the level of format icons such as Lee Ann Womack, Patty Loveless or Trisha Yearwood' than expecting a super-hot format star such as Jason Aldean to become the next Merle Haggard or Ronnie Milsap.
Trust me--if Carrie ever released a series of stop-you-in-your-tracks numbers as riveting and mesmerizing as 'The Fool'. 'Lonely Too Long', or 'The Song Remembers When' or any of the other numerous standout singles from those three format queens, the praise on this board and elsewhere would undoubtedly be extremely well deserved, and downright deafening.
And she'd certainly be very deserving of it.

helping him seek rehab may have been a smarter move than letting your father die in a storm. Because Midwestern, abusive, alcoholic single fathers are so likely to comply with going to rehab at the suggestion of their daughters?

I understand the VIDEO to this song will expand on the alcohol and I guess abuse hinted in the song, but the overall lyrics are pretty vague and helping him seek rehab may have been a smarter move than letting your father die in a storm. Based on my understanding of the song, not only was he an alcoholic, he was abusive. I think they'll emphasize this in the video. While some would rather she seek him help, that would make for a horrible song. The revenge aspect is much more invigorating and relatable. I doubt daughters often successfully convince their abusive fathers to seek help. So the former option of revenge seems much more realistic. I think the lyrics perfectly portray the message, and I don't find them vague. But I do agree that TBC has even stronger lyrics. I doubt people listening in the car will say, "why didn't she just take him to rehab?" A huge part of the song is the revenge aspect. While most are all for the honest solution to things, some might also imagine what revenge would be like. That feeling is what this song is about, at least that's what I think it's about. Whatever the case, It's very possible people will take offense, but I hardly think that'll affect the song's chart run. The song has already sold near, or over 200,000 downloads and it hasn't even been released as a single. That to me has HIT written all over it! I also don't think people will take offense to the use of the tornado as revenge. It's not like she's mocking anyone who ever died in a tornado, nor is she making light of the situation. In the context of the story, the tornado is evil, and so is the father. It's a case of evil versus evil. She's not mocking tornados, or their severity. So I have a hard time seeing why people would have a legitimate reason to take offense.

I get the sarcasm, and it's warranted, but what I am saying is the song itself doesn't really spell out that he is abusive to the extent it should to really reinforce he got what he deserved, especially when it touches on something as sensitive as a natural disaster. I am just saying what people may get from the song when they hear it for the first time on the radio. Just because you're a mean old mister does not mean I should purposely and intently aid in your death, whereas Cadillacs goes out of it's way to show the married man was very nasty and lied to both women, who build up a revenge plot of their own.

I don't think this song is too dark for country radio. Martina McBride's signature song consists of a young woman witnessing as her mother sets fire to the family home while the abusive father/husband perishes within. And we have other country staples like Goodbye Earl and Gunpowder and Lead, too.

I'm all about dark. I am just stating an opinion on this particular song. I don't find it "dark" really, just underdeveloped and pretty weak for a single. Independence Day talks about daddy leaving bruises on the cheek, and people in the town knowing what is going on. Fancy talks about Reba doing what she had to to LITERALLY survive and Gunpowder and Lead talks about an abusive boyfriend just getting out of jail coming home to make Miranda a punching bag yet again. Goodbye Earl missed the Top 10 when the Chicks were at the top of their game, so it may not be the best example. Anyway, I will not clog this thread up anymore, just was offering an opinion on some backlash that MAY come from this single.

I'm not questioning whether you enjoy dark songs or not, but its definitely less of a concern on my radar than your's, especially since songs like this tend to be huge successes for female country artists. Goodbye Earl missed the Top 10 when the Chicks were at the top of their game, so it may not be the best example. Though at the top of their game, it was their most successful in single sales. It was only matched by the Gold peak of Landsilide a few years later, and later bested by the Platinum Not Ready to Make Nice.

I don't really think the song is weak or underdeveloped. I think to me it's obvious through the lyrics "mean ole Mister" and Every Tear Soaked Whiskey Memory Blown Away" that something very bad happen to this girl. I don't think it's vague at all. I also don't think MOST people will have a problem with the result of him being Blown Away. Child Abuse is one of the few things that most people don't have Tolerance for.

There's not enough rain in Oklahoma to wash the sins out of that house...
That line alone justifies the daughter's decision, for me, at least.
I really don't get how the lyrics are vague unless you're looking for like a total rundown of the abuse that she suffered. Personally, I'm glad they didn't take it in that direction. There's a lot being said here in a relatively short amount of words and I love that.

Just putting this out there but wouldn't Two Black Caddilacs have more 'controversy' with it than this song. With Blown Away the lyrics make it obvious to me that the dad was an abusive father who deserves whatever is coming to him while Two Black Caddilacs makes no mention of whether or not the guy abused either woman just that he cheated (not that I give a lot of sympathy for cheaters). If anything TBC would be the song IMO that would get more people talking about whether the two women were morally just to kill the cheater.
Either way I'm proud of Carrie for going against the grain and releasing material that is more than just the typical party, love, or breakup songs that are currently on the country airwaves. She really is taking many more artistic risks which I think in the end will pay off!

I think this song will be just fine. There's nothing that suggests to me otherwise. Musically it's no less "country" than anything - ANYTHING - Lady A have put out recently, and lyrically it's no darker than anything country has been handed before. It's a well-sung and well-crafted song and I don't foresee any obstacles standing in its path to #1.
That said - I LOVE Two Black Cadillacs and would LOVE to see that be released as well. :)
