A SECOND CONSECUTIVE BROWN-OUT ON THE CHARTS
Zac Brown Band Looking at Big Opening, Frank Ocean Storms Out on iTunes
July 11, 2012
We know it’s hot out, but two Brown-outs in a row on the HITS Top 50 Album sales chart?
Following up RCA R&B bruiser Chris Brown’s #1 debut yesterday, look for a very different act with the same name—Atlantic country-rockers Zac Brown Band’s Uncaged—to bow in the top spot on next week’s tally, with a total that looks headed for between 210-225k.
That number beats the group’s last studio album, You Get What You Give, which came out in Sept. 2010 with 154k in sales, by more than 45%. This is the band’s third album for Atlantic after two independent releases.
The week’s big story is controversial Def Jam/IDJ R&B hyphenate Frank Ocean, a member of the L.A.-based hip-hop collective Odd Future, who will open with a very impressive 110-125k as an iTunes exclusive for his major label bow, Channel, Orange. Ocean surprised everyone by Tweeting the album would be made available after his network TV debut Monday night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon singing “Bad Religion” from the release. With an appearance on Jay Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne album—that’s him introducing the disc’s “No Church in the Wild”—as well as a best-selling mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, Ocean is burning up the blogosphere.
Ocean’s tour begins in Seattle this Friday (7/13) and hits L.A. Wiltern next Tuesday (7/17) in what is sure to be the show of the year.

That's a great number for Frank Ocean.
I'm pretty sure I Am Not a Human Being opened with about the same number when it was released digitally prior to its physical release.

Is his Physical release next week? Yes, it will be out on the 17th (which was the original release date for the album; Frank/IDJ just decided to rush-release the digital). And yeah, I can't wait to see his physical #'s either...a few weeks ago I had speculated that he would open up with ~150k based on his following, so it will be interesting to see how he does when we add the two weeks together.

Damn those numbers are really good for Frank, even better than I expected. I wonder what his first week could have been if physical were included.

Who is saying the numbers aren't "that bad"? Are you kidding me? He is selling 110k based off of very small radio play and it is itunes exclusive AND on top of that it was announced just hours before it actually went for sale. It is extremely impressive

It is extremely impressive Not to mention we have people like Usher and Chris Brown who have released multiple singles and have been promoting for months opening with, what, only 20k more than this prediction? These sales are amazing for him.

Forget the bruiser, Frank Ocean doing 110k as an iTunes exclusive for a new artist is incredibly amazing!
And Zac Brown going over 200k and their single isnt even top 10 on country radio yet. DAMN

DAMN Well, it does help that Zac Brown Band's album is on (fire) sale for $3.99 on Amazon, mp3 version, in its debut week. This really cheapins (sp?) the debut number.

Why all the panties in a twist over the bruiser comments. He's going to be stuck with it for quite some time. Wow, great job for Frank.

And yeah, the sale is probably convincing a lot of casual fans to buy the album, hopefully winning them over as diehards.

This really cheapins (sp?) the debut number. $3.99 is hardly 99 cents although it is a steep discount. And there's no way of knowing how much of its % of sales are at that price or if those buyers would have/would not have bought it elsewhere if the deal wasn't in place.

LOL I don't think calling someone who beat a woman a "bruiser" is unprofessional. He IS a bruiser.
And holy crap for an itunes exclusive doing THAT much for a new artist? WOW!

Frank did a great job building up hype for well over a year before he released this album. Those numbers are incredible. I love when real R&B artists do really well.

Well, it does help that Zac Brown Band's album is on (fire) sale for $3.99 on Amazon Oh no, it's a FIRE .... sale. In all seriousness though, Frank Ocean's numbers are fantastic for an iTunes exclusive... also a smart decision to rush the album after he started garnering a lot of attention for coming out. Usher and Chris Brown should take note, people respond to authentic music that comes from the heart and that you can connect to, not just the generic stuff you release to try and get hits on the radio. Good for Frank. And they should take note that coming out of the closet could be a good career move. Oops, did I say that?

I hear he is a great song writer. If I hear a good song, I might have to cop the album. I just hope he doesn't turn into a Bilal or Tank or Joe where they had hype put didn't reach the levels of success like a Maxwell, usher or r.kelly

Amazing for Frank! The album is fire and it goes to show Urban fans will buy when the music is good.
Also great for Zac Brown Band! Lovely seeing two big debuts. And since Mr. Ocean's album get's physically released next week, it shouldn't drop as big.

How big is Target on album sales? Just read they aren't going to sell Frank's album. "NOT because he's gay, but because it was released early exclusively to iTunes." BULLSHIT. Hate to see that hurt him.

Hate to see that hurt him. Ew. Target is where the poor shop, I doubt Frank will be effected by it at all. In all seriousness I doubt it will effect him too much. Target probably sell alot of CD's, but it's not like he's going to lose out a whole lot. It's petty that they are doing it(and I believe them when they say it's because of the Itunes release---haven't they or other's done that before?), but business is business. Ocean will be fine.
