How big is Target on album sales? Just read they aren't going to sell Frank's album. "NOT because he's gay, but because it was released early exclusively to iTunes." bulls**t. Hate to see that hurt him. Sounds like bulls**t to me, but they sold Trespassed, didn't they? I really don't think it's a gay thing(like you said they sold Trespassed). They are pissed that Ocean and his label gave Itunes the first stab at selling it. Although Target and it's big wigs are known to support anti-gay groups, so who know's.....

I think the iTunes thing probably angered them, plus him being gay put them over the edge. No one will ever know, though...

Didn't Target do the same thing after another artist did some kind of iTunes exclusive thing before it got a more widespread release? I don't think this is because Frank is gay/bi.

Zac Brown Band's 'Uncaged' Heading for No. 1, Frank Ocean Selling Big
July 11, 2012 | By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles
Zac Brown Band's "Uncaged" is aiming for No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200, while Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange" is selling faster than expected.
The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of July 18.
Chris Brown's 'Fortune' Album Debuts At No. 1 On Billboard 200
Industry sources indicate "Uncaged" could top the Billboard 200 with between 200,000 and 220,000 copies sold by the end of the tracking week on July 15. That number is a little larger than expected, thanks to Amazon MP3 sale pricing the set for $3.99. The retailer has discounted the title since it bowed on July 10.
"Uncaged" will mark the second No. 1 for the group on the Billboard 200, following 2010's "You Get What You Give," which launched with a career-high 153,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
While Amazon MP3 is helping Zac Brown Band, one title it won't be helping this week is Ocean's debut studio album, "Channel Orange." It may launch at No. 2 with a robust 100,000 to 120,000 copies -- nearly all from Apple's iTunes Store.
Target Not Carrying Frank Ocean's 'Channel Orange' in Response to iTunes Exclusive, Not Ocean's Sexuality
Ocean, an R&B singer/songwriter and a member of Odd Future, released "Channel Orange" one week early (July 10) to iTunes. The retailer is the sole digital seller of the album until July 17.
"Channel Orange" -- released by Def Jam and distributed by Universal Music Group Distribution -- is beating early, pre-release sales forecasts, which had pinned its start somewhere in the range of 40,000 to 50,000. That would have fallen in line with the bows of Odd Future's own debut studio set "The OF Tape Vol. 2" earlier this year (No. 5 with 40,000) and Odd Future member Tyler, the Creator's "Goblin" (No. 5 in 2011 with 45,000).
The album's CD version wasn't supposed to go on sale until July 17, but physical retailers have been told by Universal to start selling the album as soon as they receive it. Thus, some physical CDs will be in the mix when the album makes it debut on the Billboard 200 next week.

Frank Ocean has an outside chance of hitting number one in his second week, doesn't he? This would make him only the second openly not-straight artist to have a number-one album.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The itunes numbers will drop in week 2 and this is not being sold at Target. Other retail stores may already have it and selling it this week

Discount or not, the opening figures for the Zac Brown Band are excellent, considering they are a 45% increase from the opening figures of their second major label album, and the lead single "The Wind" was only released three to four weeks ago and has yet to reach the Top Ten in airplay.
I attribute their strong numbers to their open-mindedness in thinking outside the genre box, first and foremost. When you limit yourself to a singular genre, there's little room for error if you're aiming for commercial longevity. Everything is based on the success of your singles on one to three radio formats, and there's little room to grow.
Where the Zac Brown Band could have chosen to relegate themselves to loud, proud chicken-fried rock anthems about drinking, trucks and shaking their fists at city slickers, they've instead taken a more expansive career path in veering toward jam-band territory on "You Get What You Give", and now pushing the boundaries even further with a duet with Amos Lee, experimentations with New Orleans R&B on "Overnight", and straight-up bluegrass on their current single, just to name a few examples.
Much like the Dave Matthews Band have been rewarded for their musicianship and versatility that transcends genre labels, the Zac Brown Band are positioning themselves as the act next in line to enjoy relevance stretching beyond their first decade together. And they deserve it.
Namaste, lisping HIBISCUS

Zac Brown Band's tactics are brilliant: the new album will open well because of the name alone so it doesn't matter if there's a new hit or not. And when the new song becomes a hit, it'll soften the decrease in sales.
And amazing for Frank, although the album is not as good as I hoped (solid still) but neither was Tyler, the Creator's or OFWGKTA's.

Zac Brown Band debuts at #1 with its third Atlantic release, besting the first week of its previous album by over 70k. All four major distributors are represented nicely in this week's Top 15, with Sony having five titles for the lead, WEA next with four titles and UMG and EMI each having three. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*Zac Brown Band (Atlantic) 215-230k *Frank Ocean (Def Jam/IDJ) 125-135k Chris Brown (RCA) 45-50k Maroon 5 (A&M/Octone) 45-50k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 45-50k Linkin Park (Warner Bros.) 35-40k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 35-40k Adele (XL/Columbia) 35-40k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 30-35k Kenny Chesney (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) 30-35k Eric Church (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 18-21k Usher (RCA) 18-21k Luke Bryan (CapitolNashville) 18-21k MMG Presents, Vol. 2 (Maybach) 18-21k *Hank Williams, Jr. (Bocephus/WB Nashville) 17-20k
*Debuts (7/12p)

She's still discounted on iTunes and has a huge banner this week, which she didn't last week. Wide Awake is also a little bigger, which I'm sure helps some.

I think Frank's numbers will increase in week 2.
Physical sales still outweigh digital, and there is no reason to think that he would have the same kind of "typical" drop-offs as other artists who have established fanbases who rush out in week 1.

There is only Best Buy & Walmart, there is no Target.
There are also other internet & digital vendors of course.
Itunes makes up the majority of that and will see natural decline.
Some vendors who have stock now are already selling this week.
A week 2 increase does not seem likely

Well, we have a very recent example of an established artist doing a similar technique with Garbage's album. Their sales went up in week 2 when physical became available and they climbed the chart.
And this is an established artist where one would assume fans would rush out early.
Frank Ocean is in a similar position except he is not well known, and thus there is less reason to think there would be a rush to buy right out the gate.
Also, we don't know if AmazonMP3 will try to get in on the Frank Ocean buzz with a $3.99 promo or something once they can sell it, which could help.
I wouldn't be surprised if week 2 sees a 50%+ climb.

I don't get why some labels initially choose to release an album digitally and then physically. It's like they don't want higher peaks for their artists.
Looks like Adele will break Alanis' record after matching it last week.

^^I don't think this was planned...but it's working in their favor. I'm sure Frank is not crying over a #2 debut.

Well there's a reason why the albums are called an "iTunes exclusive" "Target exclusive" in these types of scenarios. It's because the record label struck a deal with one of the venders and is making some extra money from doing so.

Frank had buzz and their was demand that's why they released it early to Itunes(and also told retailers to start selling). Another reason why albums may be released digitally first is because of leaks. A #1 album is great bragging rights and promotion, but at the end of the day, record companies want money and sales.
