ROSS IS BOSS, JOSS IS NEXT Def Jam/IDJ Rapper Will Easily Top Chart
August 1, 2012
Rick Ross returns this week’s HITS Album chart to a semblance of sanity.
The large and in-charge rapper continues Def Jam/IDJ’s recent dominance of the marketplace with God Forgives, I Don’t, which will debut next week with between 200-220k in sales, easily going #1. His last album, Teflon Don, sold 176k upon release in July 2010. Previous label winners include Nas, who debuted at #1 last week, and newcomer Frank Ocean, with a #2 bow last month for his acclaimed debut, channel ORANGE.
S-Curve soul diva Joss Stone’s The Soul Sessions Vol. 2 reunites her with Steve Greenberg, and it’s on tap for between 21-25k, based on one-day sales reports from those music retailers not summering at their homes in the Hamptons or Laguna.
Emblem/Reprise/WB country music group Gloriana’s sophomore album, A Thousand Miles Left Behind, is looking at first-week sales of between 18-21k.
Veteran Nuclear Blast Berkeley thrash band Testament’s tenth studio album, Dark Roots of Earth, is looking at between 15-18k.
RCA’s Sparkle soundtrack, featuring the last recorded music by the late Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks, is looking at 13-16k, in front of the movie’s Aug. 17 opening.
Album sales were down 9% vs. last week, down 15% vs. same week last year and down 3% year to date.
Track sales were down 3% vs. last week, up 2% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.
TEA sales were down 7% vs. last week, down 10% vs. same week last year and down 1% year to date.
That's enough to put a chill in the air.

Joss Stone still has a solid fanbase.
Lower numbers for Gloriana than I expected. Don't they have a big country hit?

Holy shit Ross. He probably could have done 250-300K easy with a strong first single.

Holy s**t Ross. He probably could have done 250-300K easy with a strong first single. Yeah. He barely has anything out now. TNY is ok, but nothing major.

And people want to talk like hip hop is dead when we have these big hip-hop debuts all the time...

Lower numbers for Gloriana than I expected. Don't they have a big country hit? "(Kissed You) Good Night", the 2nd single from the album, is #2 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs and has gone Gold, approaching 700k in digital sales. Doesn't look like it'll hit #1, though...it's got a chance, but it has been on the chart for 40 weeks and Kenny Chesney's "Come Over" is only about 12 weeks old and looking strong at #1. Plus, Love & Theft is now in the mix and actually snuck up to #2 on Mediabase today, bumping Gloriana back to #3, despite similar AI gains for both songs. Could be a 3-way battle for #1 on the next country chart and I just don't know if Gloriana's song has enough life left in it. But yeah, I guess I spewed out a lot of info there--the simple answer is yes, they have a big hit right now, by far the biggest of their career. 20k isn't too bad, but I was hoping for numbers in the 30-35k range.

I don't think Rick Ross would have done that much better with a big hit or not. Rap is very different in terms of sales. Ross just has a dedicated fan base that would have bought the album whether or not he had a hit. I think a lot of the people are "casual" fans as well that just like Ross. He is often on many radio hits and people know he has an album out without him having big singles on the radio. Either way, it is always so strange when people see these hip hop numbers and act so shocked and flustered LOL I would have always predicted a 200k+ opening for him.

Gloriana's last album opened with like 47k. Odd that they have an actual hit this time around and are selling half that.

Rick Ross easily debuts at #1 on a very top-heavy chart next week while contributing to a possible four in the Top 10 for IDJ. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend:
*Rick Ross (Def Jam/IDJ) 210-220k Zac Brown Band (Atlantic) 35-40k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 35-40k Nas (Def Jam/IDJ) 30-35k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 30-35k Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 30-35k Adele (XL/Columbia) 27-30k Maroon 5 (A&M/Octone) 22-25k *Joss Stone (S-Curve) 22-25k Frank Ocean (Def Jam/IDJ) 19-22lk *Gloriana (Emblem/Reprise) 19-22k Linkin Park (Warner Bros.) 17-20k Chris Brown (RCA) 17-20k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 17-20k Kenny Chesney (Blue Chair/Columbia Nashville) 17-20k

Comfortably too. Seems like the low sales of summer are taking their grip on the chart.

They dont have the blond girl Cheyenne, who I think was the most famous member of the group and maybe has something to do with less sales for this album. Um, no, I highly doubt that. Cheyenne does not have a very big following at all, certainly not big enough to cause half of Gloriana's fans to not buy their new album, when she left the group, LOL. It's just the industry. Gloriana had one top 15 hit, "Wild At Heart", from their debut album and it was actually did a lot for album sales. They've had 3 singles since then, in roughly 3 years, and none of them did much, so a lot of the fans that they might be geared toward are probably instead still buying Lady A, Rascal Flatts, or Eli Young Band albums, etc. I'd say it's that, and the fact that album sales are declining, that would combine to result in lower sales for Gloriana. Still, the album may do well enough over time. "(Kissed You) Good Night" has locked in a #2 peak on the country chart and continues to sell well...it could get close to Platinum status by the end of the year. And the album is a good one, so the right single choices could keep the album going steady, even if it's only selling a few thousand copies a week.

Comfortably too. Seems like the low sales of summer are taking their grip on the chart. With lack of new releases and some of the album cuts now getting airplay, it is not out of the question that Adele could return to #1 sometime soon

I doubt Adele will fall out of the top ten until September when we see many more new debuts.

I doubt Adele will fall out of the top ten until September when we see many more new debuts. But even then, she will likely have her baby and the press coverage alone could caused a sales increase for the album? In terms of the album getting back to #1, I would love to see that happen, but I don't think it will.

Interesting BB article talked about how AAA playing "I'll Be Waiting" and how Top 40 is starting to sample "Turning Tables" so TT might turn into a hit and get album sales back up again...

Interesting BB article talked about how AAA playing "I'll Be Waiting" and how Top 40 is starting to sample "Turning Tables" so TT might turn into a hit and get album sales back up again... Triple A have been playing it for months! It's spent over 200 days on the chart already and has only peaked at #23! On mediabase anyway. I would like to see TT rise up HAC maybe. But Adele's recurrent play is really strong, so any airplay TT will get will be hurt by that. And the fact it isn't being pushed or has an adds date.

I doubt Adele will return to #1. We also doubted she would go Diamond and look where she's headed. Not saying another week at #1 is likely but I'm never going to count her out

Exactly, I did not say it WOULD happen, I said it was possible
No major releases for a while. The #2 album is around 35K. Radio is starting to play other tracks on the album even though the label is not promoting a 5th single. A slight bump from the extra radio exposure could bump this up to 40K and #1

I based my statement on the release schedule.
Aug 7 is Now 43. That will debut at #1 or Rick Ross' 2nd week will be #1.
Aug 14 has weak releases.
Aug 21 is Trey Songz. He'll be #1.
Aug 28 will be Trey's 2nd week at #1.
Forget September. Lots of major releases.
