Well, since HAC and AAA just split, I'll need a new thread to post that this is under Cool New Music for AAA now; it's currently within the top 20 on HAC and top 50 on pop. He's the latest American Idol winner, but the single's fairly akin to Mumford & Sons, so it could feasibly chart here as well.

I'm impressed by this song, but I'm unimpressed that he didn't write it.

Considering Idols rarely get any play on Triple A radio (although Haley and Crystal got a little play with their debut singles), this is pretty impressive, even if Phillip didn't write it.
Its sales are now approx. 1.2 million

Top 30 on AAA:
49 28 PHILLIP PHILLIPS Home 109 52 57 0.581
I wouldn't be surprised if a few alternative stations picked this up and carried it to the Top 40 of that chart.

A bit belated, but... Top 10 on AAA:
9 8 PHILLIP PHILLIPS Home 380 364 16 1.666
Aside from the AAA success, it's also getting played on two Alternative stations. And I kinda have mixed feelings about whether this should be played on Alternative (and AAA for that matter). I actually really like this song, and I think it fits the current state of the format aesthetically. But the fact that the song was written by two guys other than Phillips for the pop music manufacturing machine known as Idol will definitely work against its Alternative credibility. The fact that it's already shaping up to be a CHR and (Hot) AC hit may not help matters either, though that hasn't hurt some other songs recently.
Of course, Daughtry did have a top 20 hit a few years ago with "It's Not Over", a song that really didn't sound remotely Alternative to me, and that was co-written by others not in his band. Then there was also the top 20 success of Adele's "Rolling In The Deep". So who knows?

If Daughtry can chart, so can this.

Top 20 gainers at Alternative. I wonder if it being so high on Billboard's revamped Rock Songs chart has encouraged Alternative PDs to add it or increase its spins.

Top 50 on Alternative:
75 50 PHILLIP PHILLIPS Home 103 50 53 0.608
Should I thank Billboard's new methodology for that?

"Home" is #2 on AAA today. Still far behind M&S, but I wonder if there's a chance it can make it to #1 for Phillips' debut album release, less than 3 weeks away... :o

Who would have thought that a huge run at #1 from M&S would be ended by an American Idol winner? I'm impressed with the longevity this has shown (on multiple formats, no less) throughout the summer and fall. Hopefully that means good things for his debut album, out in two weeks!

This song is one of the main things wrong with Alternative radio today. Taking a song from Pop is no way Alternative. People complain about Active Rock songs on Alternative not being Alternative, but any song from Active Rock would be more alternative than this. At least they aren't played on mainstream radio.

I see this going Top 30 at best. I think the whole "American Idol" thing will indeed work against it.

Do people really still have issues with American Idol related items anymore? Because if this were five years ago, I'd have been hoping and begging for the Fox network and Interscope records to be sued for every last penny by the guy who wrote "Sea of Love" in the 1950's. But now, the show means nothing to me anymore, it seems like a shell of its former self, I couldn't name a single person involved with the show within the past three seasons, and I actually kind of like "Home".
Whereas "It's Not Over" was the ultimate example of financial peer pressure in the radio industry of my lifetime, "Home", while there's probably some of that, seems like an example of radio slowly laying off the AI blacklist in favor of a track that works for them.

This is just as alternative as Mumford & Sons, and they hit #1. The difference is that Mumford & Sons isn't played on Pop. I don't really have a problem with Alternative crossing over to Pop, but Alternative shouldn't be taking songs from Pop. Kinda defeats the purpose of "Alternative".

^Yeah, I do have to admit that rubs me the wrong way a little. As I said before, I like the song, and I don't even really care that much about the Idol connection or the fact that Phillips didn't write it. But for a song to start gaining traction on Alternative after it's already smashed at CHR and Hot AC just goes against the natural order of things in my opinion. From what I've heard, in the earlier days of alternative/modern rock radio, stations would drop a song once it crossed over. I don't necessarily advocate such an approach now, but what we're seeing with this song now (and also with Adele a while back, though at least she first broke out at AAA) seems to be going too far to the opposite extreme.
That said, I don't expect this song to get much further on the Alternative charts.

Technically it charted first on Hot AC.

I wouldn't really say this crossed over from the pop formats to rock--it was only top 50 on pop and top 20 on HAC when it was sent to AAA, and it quickly gained ground there. AAA is also the only format where it hit #1 (though it's #2 on HAC only because "One More Night" has been so massive and lengthy in its run). This isn't really an outlier from the rock formats (at least, not AAA) anyway.
I doubt it will make it very far on Alt, though, since its pop run is wrapping up and there's the whole Idol stigma that's been previously mentioned.

This is just as alternative as Mumford & Sons, and they hit #1. Huge difference in the lyrics, though Singing about cannibals, meat eaters, and lions = Alternative Singing about finding your home = pop

Now we're just splitting hairs, what's it matter? I don't care where this song came from first or anything, it's a good song!

Now we're just splitting hairs, what's it matter? I don't care where this song came from first or anything, it's a good song! Nobody's saying that the song is good/bad/whatever. It just doesn't belong on Alternative because it isn't "alternative", it's pop. Leave alternative to the "alternative" artists who aren't spun 10,000 a week. The song's a good fit on AAA. That format ventures into many different genres of music like folk and such. Even artists like Pink and Train are played on AAA.
