Is it true that this cover for the upcoming TNT network remake of the 1977 classic romantic-comedy "Goodbye Girl" by Hootie & The Blowfish is actually going to be released as a single?
In January 2004, TNT is scheduled to release the remake, featuring Jeff Daniels and Everybody Loves Raymond's Patricia Heaton. The title track to the movie soundtrack was originally written and performed by David Gates of Bread.
It is said a video has also been shot for this cover, also starring Patricia Heaton and featuring clips from the movie.
I don't know about you, but this may become their biggest hit since "I Will Wait" and this may possibly have them return to the Hot AC Top 20 for the first time in over six years.
Can Hootie and the crew pull off a suprise moderate hit, or is their opportunity pond still simply filled with silt?
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

It would be interesting to hear that is for sure. Hootie was a pretty good band I am still shocked that they fell off like they did. But on the other hand they were probably the most overplayed band of the90's.

But on the other hand they were probably the most overplayed band of the90's. It's a shame they became one of the most loathed bands after the "Cracked Rear View" phenomenon, "Musical Chairs" was a brilliant album and that only went platinum. As far as their most recent material goes, I don't really care for it as it sounds bland, but I think Hootie got picked on way too much despite being overplayed. I truly feel "The Goodbye Girl" can push Hootie back into the Hot AC Top 20 at least one last time. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

After some digging, I got my hands on the CD single this morning. This is a great cover of the classic AM radio hit! It's just enough like the original, yet has the "Hootie" sound. I posted a 30 second sample on my site to share with anyone interested in hearing it. Hootie & The Blowfish "Goodbye Girl" 30 second sampleenjoy! :)

Has there been an add date at Hot AC (or any format at all) set for this song?

some new information---
from BILLBOARD:
Hootie & the Blowfish, Ashanti, Joss Stone, Kenny Chesney and Renee Fleming make up the artist lineup for cable channel TNT's "Christmas in Washington" TV special, airing Dec. 14. The one-hour holiday benefit concert, hosted by actress Patricia Heaton, is the centerpiece of the 22nd annual special.
"Christmas in Washington" will also feature the world premiere of Hootie & the Blowfish's video clip for the new song "Goodbye Girl." The song, a remake of David Gates' 1977 single, was produced to accompany the TNT original film of playwright Neil Simon's "The Goodbye Girl," which premieres Jan. 16.
Perhaps there will be an add date shortly thereafter.

A couple stations just picked up this cover on the night of the world premiere of "The Goodbye Girl" re-make on TNT! Perhaps this will indeed be a single.
I still don't see why not this should touch the Top 20. Though H&TB are way out of their prime during the "Cracked Rear View" era, "Innocence" was actually able to almost make the Top 20 off their self-titled release last spring, showing they still have limited muscle.

Those TNT commericals have become annoying as hell. As such, this song is annoying as hell. I think a general rule of thumb should be that commericals should feature no more than 10-15 seconds of a song. Any longer, and somebody's gonna be changing channels. In this case, the somebody is me.

The full track listing for THE BEST OF HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH (1993-2003) is as follows:
“Hold My Hand” “Let Her Cry” “Only Wanna Be With You” “Time” “Hey Hey What Can I Do?” “Old Man & Me (When I Get To Heaven)” “Tucker’s Town” “Sad Caper” “Use Me” “I Go Blind” “I Will Wait” “Only Lonely” “Wishing” “Space” “Innocence” “The Goodbye Girl” “Not Even The Trees”
This looks like includes all their hits and popular tracks. "Not Even The Trees" was chosen by a fan poll.

That CD looks good. I'll have to pick it up.
I heard them perform "Goodbye Girl" on TV at some sporting event. I liked it, but have yet to hear it on radio.

Homie and the Goldfish need to give it up. Die already!

I'd probably get this in a used CD store at some point if I didn't already have 'Cracked Rear View'. I doubt I'll get it unless it's cheap in the future.

"Not Even The Trees" was chosen by a fan poll. :) Unlike most greatest hits packages recently, I believe Hootie and the Blowfish couldn't have done better assembling their best of collection. Take for instance the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sure, they have their biggest hit ("Under The Bridge") and a lot of the Californication material, but it's so one-sided. Where's "The Zephyr Song" and "Can't Stop", as well as a bunch of their pre-Californication material? Also those covers (particularly the cheesy "Highest Ground" one) weren't necessary. Or "Films About Ghost: The Best of Counting Crows" was also assembled badly. They have some of their biggest hits, but there's no "Daylight Fading", "Anna Begins" or "All My Friends". And why the heck is "Holiday In Spain" on there, which is both never a single and also not a big fan favorite. But Hootie, on the other hand, has the right idea on a quality compilation. They've got all their biggest singles (with the exception of "Hannah Jane", which wasn't big anyway), the cover, even some rarities from "Scattered, Smothered and Covered". And to top it all up, they let the fans decide a favorite song for it, also probably their truly best song ("Not Even The Trees") This is definitely one greatest hits collection I'm getting. Other than R.E.M's greatest hits, this seems like the only worthy best-of buy to me. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Heh, and I don't even consider that one worth getting. ;) Where's "Bang and Blame"? True, that and "Shiny Happy People" were both big hits and weren't in the track-listing. However, overall I feel the band leans for quality over quantity, which is evident with "Nightswimming" and "Electrolite" in the list. Actually I got the Special Edition edition of it with the extra CD featuring rarities and B-sides. With a price of two CDS in one, that deemed quite worthy to me. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Noah, what about No Doubt & Sheryl Crow's best of... Nah. Though I have all her albums anyway (she is my aunt, in fact) and I can go for now without TFCITD and that other new song, this collection does miss some hits also. "Can't Cry Anymore", "Anything But Down" and "C'mon C'mon". Also, I'm not thrilled with "Picture" being there, though of course she's the main reason the song hitted big. As for No Doubt, why the heck do they already have a best-of out? At least release one more album, y'all! Three albums (one of them a commerical bust) and one cover is barely any compilation. I love this band, but they jumped the gun as far as best-ofs go. Sincerely, Noah Eaton
