This is apparently going to be the lead-single in support of "Films About Ghosts", the Greatest Hits compilation for Counting Crows through their first decade together.
I have not yet heard this new version of the track, which was originally a demo about a decade old now, but I have heard the original version and believe this has potential to be another huge hit on Triple A for the band, with possible Hot AC airplay.
Has anyone heard this new version, and how well do you think it'll perform?
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

It is really frustrating to get "Greatest Hits" albums from artists/bands that really dont have that many true hits. If you go based off of charts like Triple A, I guess you could make an argument for the Counting Crows being able to release a CD full of true "great hits," but how many Hot 100 top 40 singles have the counting crows had?
Mr. Jones (The follow up to Mr. Jones? I forgot the title) A Long December Hanginround
did Big Yellow Taxi even make the top 40 of the Hot 100?
I'd much rather see bands call these type of releases some sort of 'singles collection' rather than a collection of 'greatest hits'

The Counting Crows haven't had THAT many hits but more than Fastball.
-Mr. Jones -Round Here -Rain King the above 3 were Top 10. They also had a fourth which I forget the title but it didn't chart despite recieving airplay here. The "one for sorrow, two for hope" or whatever it is. Then there's -A Long December -the followup to that -American Girls -Big Yellow Taxi
So that's 8 right there and I'm sure they had another release from their second album and another from the third.

If I'm not wrong, all the singles are:
1) August and everything after Mr. Jones Round here Rain King A murder of one
2) Recovering the satellites Angels of the silences A long december Daylight fading Have you seen me lately?
3) This desert life Hangingaround Mrs. Potters lullaby All my friends
4) Hard Candy American girls Miami Big yellow taxi Hard Candy
5) Non album tracks Einstein on the beach
I thinks that's enoght for a greatest hits, don't you think so?? Morover, they have a lot of other non-single tracks that are known by a lot of pleople
Omaha If I could give all my love to you Miller's angels Colorblind ...

They have plenty of songs for a Greatest Hits album. And they're never gonna have another hit again (they declared themselves has-beens by releasing "Big Yellow Taxi" with Vanessa Carlton credited where she barely even sang backup), so why not release it now.

I didn't say they didn't release enough singles...I'm saying how many of those singles are true hit songs. Not that many.
If they want to call it a "singles" collection go ahead, but I have a problem with an artist that has a handful of true hits releasing an album and calling it a "Greatest Hits" collection.

Here is the Radio & Records CHR/Pop History for Counting Crows. I do not know of the Hot AC peaks.
By the way, if anyone has data on "Einstein On The Beach", the hit single which was never placed on any album, please add it too! I know that also charted, despite not being a single.
---------------AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER ERA---------------
***Note*** Counting Crows could have well performed much better with "Round Here" and scored other hit singles if not for lead singer Adam Duritz's struggle with fame at the time and deciding not to make any more videos and release any more singles in response.
1st Single:
Mr. Jones: #1 (3 Weeks) Released 2/18/94 Reached Peak 4/29/94 On Chart: 29 Weeks
2nd Single:
Round Here: #9 Released 6/24/94 Reached Peak 9/9/94 On Chart: 17 Weeks
3rd Single: Rain King: #22 Released: 11/11/94 Reached Peak: 1/6/95 On Chart: 10 Weeks
----------------------Recovering The Satellites Era--------------------
1st Single:
Angels Of The Silences: Data Unavailable Likely Did Not Chart (Performed Fairly Well on Alternative)
2nd Single:
A Long December: #7 Released: 11/29/96 Reached Peak: 3/21/97 On Chart: 22 Weeks
3rd Single:
Daylight Fading: #26 Released: 5/23/97 Reached Peak: 6/13/97 On Chart: 9 Weeks 4th Single:
Children In Bloom: (Did Not Chart)
------------------------THIS DESERT LIFE ERA------------------------
1st Single:
Hanginaround: #18 Released: 11/5/99 Reached Peak: 1/14/00 On Chart: 16 Weeks 2nd Single:
Mrs. Potters Lullaby: (Did Not Chart)
3rd Single:
All My Friends: (Did Not Chart)
--------------------------HARD CANDY ERA----------------------------
1st Single:
American Girls: (Did Not Chart)
2nd Single:
Miami: (Did Not Chart)
3rd Single:
Big Yellow Taxi: #30 Released: 4/11/03 Reached Peak: 5/2/03 On Chart: 7 Weeks
4th Single:
If I Could Give All My Love (Richard Manuel Is Dead): (Did Not Chart) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
So indeed they have not been exactly a "radio-staple band", nevertheless they have had their moments, with three Top-10 hits under their belt as singles ("Einstein On The Beach" I think made the Top 10 without being a single) and on Triple A radio they've had many more hits than elsewhere.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

3) This desert life Hangingaround Mrs. Potters lullaby All my friends... I totally forgot about that CD!
Re: peaks of songs. Despite only lasting 17 weeks and a peak of #9, I was under the impression that 'Round Here' was a relatively big hit. And #23 peak for 'Rain King'?! I was sure that was a Top 10 hit!! ??? That's odd. I thought it went Top 10 during the holidays which explained why it didn't make a yearend chart and that it didn't last long.
And what is this 'Einstein On The Beach' song?

"Big Yellow Taxi" made me give up on them forever. They could put out the greatest song and it would be unlistenable to me now.

A song doesn't have to be Top 10 on pop to be considered a "hit." Among many of their fans, some of those songs are huge, and those are probably the people that will buy this CD anyway. "Hanginaround" and "Mrs Potter's Lullaby" were huge on AAA - finishing #10 and #9 in the year that they were out. On a side note... "Anna Begins" could be included. I don't think that was released but it still gets plenty of AAA, Alt, and Hot AC airplay.

And what is this 'Einstein On The Beach' song? "Einstein On The Beach" is a rare track originally recorded on a demo tape amidst the August And Everything After sessions. Adam Duritz decided not to put it on the album because "it wasn't mopey enough". However, the people at Geffen, somehow hearing the track, immediately found it to be extremely catchy and leaked it into the airwaves. The instant Adam Duritz learned this non-single was getting huge airplay, he whined about it and was quite upset and has hated the song ever since...until now perhaps. In my opinion, "Einstein On The Beach" is the most catchiest song Counting Crows has ever written, and if they re-mixed the track and released it as a true single this time, it would be a big hit at least on AAA and Hot AC. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I don't think that was released but it still gets plenty of AAA, Alt, and Hot AC airplay. "Omaha" gets played plenty of times here on Triple A station KBCO also. And yes, "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" was huge on Triple A radio, despite flopping on every other format, mostly in part fue to its duration, originally at 7:45 but released in two parts as a single, estimated just over 4:30 each. I still have no data on "Angels Of The Silences", which was the lead single off of "Recovering The Satellites". I know for a fact it was overall a flop ("A Long December" rescued the album) but I think it did quite well on Alternative then, being their loudest recording to date. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

"Big Yellow Taxi" made me give up on them forever. They could put out the greatest song and it would be unlistenable to me now. I agree with both of you. I wanted to burn my 2 Counting Crows CDs after hearing Big Yellow Taxi for the 100,000th time. That song gets a big fat [red] F[/red] from me. Urgh! Just the thought of it makes me want to hurt someone. Whatever their new song is, I hope it's appealing to AC, so as to lower the probability of me hearing Big Yellow Taxi again. I'm surprised Angels Of The Silences wasn't a big hit on Pop, because I was certainly very familiar with it.

This is how their singles have done on either the alternative chart or modern rock tracks on billboard:
AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER Mr. Jones -- #2 (BB) Round Here -- #8 (BB) Rain King -- DNC (but made Album Rock Tracks) A Murder of One -- DNC (but on Album Rock, it made the Top 20) ---- DGC Rarities '94: Einstein On The Beach -- #1 ------- RECOVERING THE SATTELITES (here's where R&R stuff begins) Angels of the Silences -- #3 A Long December -- #3 Daylight Fading -- #19 Have You Seen Me Lately? -- Don't think it made the top 30 on R&R, but something like #33 on Billboard
THIS DESERT LIFE Hanginaround -- #18, but was huge on AAA as mentioned
Nothing else charted I don't think, but this is their main format (AAA), so it seems right that they'd have a Greatest Hits album. Heck, even Throbbing Gristle have a greatest hits collection and they were never big.

I didn't know they released "Miami." I have that song on some mix tape cd, and I love(d) it.
Personally, I'm not very familiar with Counting Crows. I've only heard a handful of their songs, and only their singles.

Looks like their latest may be going Top 20, their second consecutive successful Top 20 effort since failing to chart on four consecutive attempts ("Mrs. Potter's Lullaby, All My Friends, American Girls, Miami)
"She Don't Want Nobody Near" has also just replaced "Fallen" at #1 on Triple A. With the way the chart fluctuates, Sarah may hold her ground or Howie Day may suddenly have a surge of his own, but Counting Crows may be looking at another #1.
Also, the latest video, featuring just Adam Duritz, is increasing in rotation on VH1. Personally, though I know it is just Adam walking throughout the video, I kind of like it. Kind of a classy video that makes you contemplate.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton
