As I mentioned alittle in the Pat Monahan topic, what are some other bands to eventually sprout a lead singer to get hits on Hot AC?
Basically, I'm asking for examples like that of Train -> Pat Monahan or Matchbox Twenty -> Rob Thomas. I'm wondering if there's any sort of trend between how established a band is and how well known the lead singer is before the release of his/her first solo single.
Does anyone have Hot AC chart histories for Matchbox Twenty and then later on, Rob Thomas? And Train -> Pat Monahan Tonic - Emerson Hart No Doubt -> Gwen Stefani
others?

I guess Johnny Rzeznik technically fits this description.

He does!
His song didn't do all that great tho. Considering the Goo Goo Dolls are more known than, say, Train, I think it's surprising that Pat may get a bigger hit than Johnny.

Darius Rucker is releasing a solo country album in Jan/Feb of 08 with a first single hitting radio anytime. I have no doubt he'll be crossing over to Hot AC with capitol behind the project.

He already tried it in 2002 and it pretty much flopped...but it was pretty neat to hear him sing a sort of R&B/rock combination I thought "I'm Still Here" by John Rzeznik was a pretty decent size hit on Hot AC - it made it into the teens on the CHR/HAC combo chart and stayed for about 16 weeks "Hero" was basically a solo hit by Chad Kroeger (not sure what Josey Scott did except play guitar I think and back him up on vocals)

Lead singer of Blessed Union Of Souls was Eliot Sloan - he never had a Top 40 solo hit on CHR or HAC - not sure what u mean Nina Gordon I thought was the ex-lead singer of Berlin Jon Bon Jovi went solo, but not with "Always" - his solo hits were "Blaze Of Glory" "Miracle" "Levon" and "Midnight In Chelsea"

He has a major label behind him and he's not trying to revamp his image. Hootie has inched closer and closer toward the country market and it shined through on 3 or 4 tracks on their last album. Darius will do well, and it's going to help having a bunch of guest stars including Vince Gill and Allison Krauss.

Nina was indeed from Veruca Salt.

The only song I can remember is "Seether" (the song not the band) which came out I think around '95 when Hot AC def. wouldn't have played it, only Alternative and Alt-leaning CHRs Also, apparently Dolores O'Riardon (or however you spell it) from the Cranberries is goin solo Oh you guys forgot Scott Stapp from Creed...I know "The Great Divide" edged into the Hot AC Top 40 a couple years ago

Alex Band from the Calling if you want to count his song with Santana.
Alex Band's version of "Why Don't You And I" was infinitely more successful than Chad Kroeger's.

No, I used R&R but I incuded the holiday break wrong I guess. Thanks for pointing that out. In that case, I might be wrong about "If You're Gone" as well, but I'll wait to make sure.

I knew it peaked at #27 on Billboard, not sure about R&R though. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it peaked at #27 on R&R. I don't follow Billboard. You're welcome.

If Youβre Gone spent 10 weeks at #1.
Downfall peaked at #28 (for 2 weeks).
These are R&R numbers without holiday weeks counted.

As I mentioned alittle in the Pat Monahan topic, what are some other bands to eventually sprout a lead singer to get hits on Hot AC? No Doubt was a successful band with an unknown female lead singer. But when that lead singer went solo, she became even more successful on both pop and Hot AC than her band had ever been - with possibly the exception of the song "Don't Speak". Also, Bono of U2 tried going solo without much success; but he did have a #18 hit with the Corrs in 2002 with the Ryan Adams-penned "When the Stars Go Blue".

Look how "Push" and "Mad Season" both peaked at #6 - the Hot AC chart in 1997 was too conservative (I think a lot of HACs back then were like ACs today) - and def. don't think "Disease" was a bigger hit than "Push" - looks like HAC didn't really "adjust" to pop/alternative until 1998 That push to pop-alternative began in 1997, but it became very obvious in '98 with songs like "Sex and Candy", "Closing Time", and "One Week" charting incredibly high on the Hot AC chart. If "Push" had been released in 1998 or after, it would have peaked in the top 3 - possibly even #1.

Completely agree with that - I remember when people couldn't believe that WPLJ was playin "Semi-Charmed Life" in high rotation...I'd almost say that was the first song (that I can remember) that really started transforming Hot AC from "soft CHR" to "pop/alternative"
