It hit #4 back in 1961. NOTES: - Something I'm going to start doing is color-coding the biggest (upward) mover and biggest dropper within the countdown - but only if Casey announces either as such.
- With all the upper-tempo songs out there lately, this show was kind of refreshing for all the slower music it had. That said, it felt like there was quite a bit of it in this week's show for a Top 40 of the later half of the 80s. I also have to hand it to WCRZ this week - not only did the show end when it was supposed to, but they played all four Flashback Extras this week. Add those to the show's own Extra, three LDDs, the Top 2 played in full at the beginning, plus the Top 40 itself...and that's 50 songs played in the four-hour slot!
- Casey erred when he stated that "Two People" was spending its third week at #30; it only spent two there. He did the same with "Control" at #6...methinks the week off he had the week before (He stated that Charlie Van Dyke filled in the week before.) must've had an after-effect.
- Fittingly, "This is the Time" was Billy Joel's 28th Top 40 hit. Casey announced Billy as having had more Top 40 hits than anyone in the countdown...except for Chicago, who in fact also currently had their 28th.
- Casey announced Ben E. King as the only artist at that time to have appeared in the Top 10 in four different decades - in the 50s as lead singer of The Drifters, 60s and 70s solo, and of course the 80s with the "Stand By Me" re-release.
- #1 on the Album Chart: Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi (earlier described as returning to #1, unseating Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-85)
- #1 on the Country Chart: "What Am I Gonna Do About You" by Reba McEntire
- #1 on the Soul Chart: "Stop to Love"
I'll be sure to catch American Top 40: The '80s this Sunday morning at 9 on 105.1 The River (WJDX-FM). Hopefully, I'll wake up before 9! :)

The droppers are: "No More Lonely Nights" by Paul McCartney (LW: 35), "Tender Years" by John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band (LW: 33), "Bruce" by Rick Springfield (LW: 31), "I Feel For You" by Chaka Khan (LW: 29), "Understanding" by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band (LW: 24), and "Out of Touch" by Hall & Oates (LW: 22). NOTES: - This is the show where they changed the opening theme for the rest of the duration of the 1984-87 theme package.
- Interesting that "Tenderness" prompted a story about the song that took the longest time to reach the Top 40 once debuting on the Hot 100, as only 6 weeks later, "Missing You" would beat "Tenderness" 's 10-week mark (though not the 20-week mark of "Black Superman", of course).
- Also interesting that "The Heat is On" and "Loverboy" received the softer jingle. Actually, all four hour-opening songs did. :O
- Being from Bay City, I'd like to say that I know of the Carla K. from the second LDD. Unfortunately, I don't. :(
- Another one from the "Deja Vu" files: The story of Johnnie Ray, noted for crying when he sang. At least one other time it would be told is by Charlie Van Dyke on 3-7-87.
- #1 on the Country chart: "There's a Fire in the Night" by Alabama
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Gotta Get You Home Tonight" by Eugene Wilde
- #1 on the Album chart: Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen

I also find it noteworthy that Tenderness took such a long time to crack the Top 40, but then only took 3 weeks to fall out of the Hot 100 once it left the Top 40.

The cue sheet shows Elvis's "Don't Be Cruel" between #28 and #27. (Specifically, it's indicated as LDD: with that part crossed out.) Or is that another example of something listed on the cue sheet that isn't in fact in the show?

Or is that another example of something listed on the cue sheet that isn't in fact in the show? Looking at Pete Battistini's AT40 '80s book, it was meant to be a teaser story, not an LDD. A piece of "Don't Be Cruel" was played.

OK. Figured the LDD part was a typo since it was crossed out, but that explains it.

Falling out are: "Broken Wings" by Mr. Mister (LW: 36), "Sex as a Weapon" by Pat Benatar (LW: 33), and "Separate Lives" by Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin (LW: 28). NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WIDL.
- Two promos on the cue sheet refer to Barbra Streisand's "Somewhere" as a song threatening to break into the Top 40 this week. Well...it was stalling at #43 this week, and wouldn't go any higher.
- Nice of Premiere to place the "Super Bowl Shuffle" extra right after the sports-related LDD. Larry Morgan mentioned that the Bears would go on to win Super Bowl XX (and indeed, it wasn't even close - 46-10!).
- Oddly enough, it would be the New England Patriots who were on the end of that beating. Meanwhile, Boston's own The Cars have this week's Biggest Dropper.
- As I mentioned above, the cue sheet also lists "Don't Be Cruel" (erroneously as a LDD, though that's crossed out) - wonder if it was intended as a full extra, but due to time had to be cut down to a couple droppieces?
- Jill in the second LDD no doubt picked "Missing You" because she was missing Todd...but with John's singing about how he "ain't missing you!" in the song, one has to wonder if the LDD might have done more harm than good if Todd heard it.
- A Top 3 final segment with no teased story leading in...unusual, but the cue sheet once again has the answer: Another promo mentioned Wham!'s 12-5 jump and Survivor's 8-3 jump last week, with both threatening to hit #1 now - though as you can see above, neither would get there.
- #1 on the Album chart: The Broadway Album by Barbra Streisand
- #1 on the Country chart: "Just in Case" by The Forrester Sisters
- #1 on the Dance & Disco chart: "Slave to the Rhythm" by Grace Jones
- #1 on the Soul chart: "That's What Friends Are For"

^This long distance dedication was hilarious:
LDD: John Waite "Missing You" from Jill in Fairfax, VA to Todd, who's been put into a drug rehab center to break him of his drug habits despite everything his parents, other friends, and Jill have tried
He smoked "marijuana"!!! Hung out with "druggie" friends!!!
Aren't most kids like this today??

Lucky me: I was awake before 8:00 this morning. As it turned out, American Top 40: The '80s is a four-hour show--and had started at 8 am (instead of 9 am). So next Sunday, I'll be sure to catch American Top 40: The '80s at 8 am on 105.1 The River (WJDX-FM).
I hope to be awake before 8! :)

Time for the second half of this weekend's preview. As reported, "AT40: The '70s" has two shows this week. The "A" show for this week is from 1/30/1971 ... Original extras: "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" - The Shirelles "Theme From A Summer Place" Percy Faith "We Can Work It Out" - The Beatles "I'm A Believer" - The Monkees "Isn't It A Pity" - George Harrison The George Harrison, Percy Faith and Shirelles songs will be played as optional extras. The Beatles and Monkees songs remain. ... I was surprised and glad when KMCH included the optional extras this week. Plus, after KOKZ aired the "B" show, KMCH aired the "A" show. (I've no idea whether that's accidental or not.) Regardless, both '70s programs hit the airwaves here in their entirety. :)) But, I'm curious about the "Isn't It A Pity" optional extra; anybody know where that segment came from? I'm guessing it's from one of the next two weeks' shows (2/6 or 2/13/71).

NOTES: - This week's Station of the Week: WWIS.
- Casey mentioned that "Hot Thing", the B-side to "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man", was climbing the Hot 100 at #63 this week. Turns out it would peak right there. Womp womp womp... ;)
- Originally edited (shortened): "Got My Mind Set on You".
- Interestingly, "Because of You" received the softer jingle. Maybe solely because of its intro?
- Story behind "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" as an Extra: It was a note originally written by George Michael to Andrew Ridgeley's mother. Later on, George thought it would be a great line for a song. One #1 hit in three countries (including the U.S.) later... :)
- On last week's show, Casey welcomed WBCM (Bay City, MI) to the AT40 family. This week, it's their successor affiliate WIOG who gets a shout out. :)
- The #1s on Billboard's other charts were read very early this week - leading into #8! The only other time I can recall them being read that early was on 5-24-86, in that exact same position.
- I get that Kimberly Kirk sees Walter Payton as an inspiration - but somehow I'm betting that either she didn't read the lyrics to the Chicago song, or simply didn't care about that.
- DOUBLE DUTY: Casey reads station WMEE twice during the show, during the 2nd and 4th hours. He'd make this exact same mistake, during the exact same two hours, with station KMMR only three weeks later (3-12).
- #1 on the Country chart: "Twinkle, Twinkle, Lucky Star" by Merle Haggard
- #1 on the Black Singles chart: "Girlfriend"
- #1 on the Album chart: Faith by George Michael
- #1 on the Dance chart: "I Want to Be Your Property" by Blue Mercedes
