Flashback Extra: Billy Joel "Big Shot"02 02 The Village People - YMCA (2) 01 01 Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I'm Sexy (1)Notes: - Station of the Week: KOKZ (because WODC won't be playing this countdown until Sunday night and I have a party to go to before then) - From the "Deja Vu" files: This marked the third time in the previous 14 months that Casey had told the story of Santana and the barber who helped made them famous but it was the first of those three in which the story was told before playing their song in the countdown. On the 1/21/1978 and the 10/14/1978 shows, it was told before playing an extra (both times it was before "Evil Ways"). - Larry Morgan did note that John Williams' "Superman" was one of two "Superman" songs in the Hot 100 this week but while Herbie Mann's version made the Top 40, the former's chart run was anything but super. This week, it fell from #81 (which it peaked) all the way down to #100. - I really hope that Michael isn't all too disappointed if he ever found out about Gore's sexual preferences (clearly Vladimir Putin would not approve). - The story behind "Got To Be There" as an extra was to spotlight Michael Jackson's achievement of being in four #1 songs (with the Jackson Five) before his 13th birthday. Hard to imagine Michael had only one solo #1 ("Ben") at this point; that, of course, would change starting later in the year. - The story behind the "One Man Woman" extra was based on Paul Anka redoing the lyrics to this song at the suggestion of a computer testing service. - From the "Oops" files: Casey makes an on-air correction on the male voice singing on Donna Summer's hit. It was previously announced that Bruce Sudano, Donna's then-boyfriend (later husband), sang on the record but the parents of Joe "Bean" Williams corrected Casey by saying it was their son who sang on the record. - An interesting logjam between songs #8 through #14. Of those songs, only Earth, Wind & Fire's song was not in their peak position (but ironically, they fell from their peak position the previous week). - I can't for the life of me transcribe the name of the school Casey mentioned in the second LDD much less the names of the exchange students. - The "Long Distance Dedication" jingle was played before both LDDs. - Kinda weird for Casey to play Cliff Richard's biggest hit when he had one Top 10 hit and three total Top 40 hits at the time. Ironically, Cliff would go on to have more Top 10s (two) and Top 40s (four) since. - Leading into the #1 song, Casey told the story of how Rod Stewart was censored(!). Performing at a benefit concert for UNICEF, Rod performed a restrained version of his hit televised only from the waist up a la Elvis Presley. Clearly somebody at the U.N. thought Rod the Bod was (to borrow from Right Said Fred)... too sexy! :) - #1 Soul: "Bustin' Loose" - Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers - #1 Country: "Every Which Way But Loose" - Eddie Rabbitt - #1 Disco: "Keep On Dancin'/Do It At The Disco/Let's Lovedance Tonight" - Gary's Gang - #1 Album: Blondes Have More Fun - Rod Stewart

Hour #2: "You've Got A Friend" - James Taylor (original extra from 8/19/1972 show) Hour #3: "Scorpio" - Dennis Coffey & The Detroit Guitar Band (NR; fell out of Top 40 this week) Many thanks for the info on the James Taylor extra, that's good to know. Do you happen to know which show the Dennis Coffey cut came from? The edits to remove Casey's mentions of its chart position were very good but, not quite perfect. ;)

Kinda strange way of doing that I must say.

Since December 29, 2013, I've been listening to it every Sunday morning on 105.1 The River (WJDX-FM: a classic-hits station).

Full rundown of years AT40 used Billboard's year-end chart. 1970-'71, 1974-'76, 1978-'79, 1985-'89 Years in which AT40 conducted their own survey 1972-'73, 1977, 1980-'84, 1990-'94. If this has been answered previously, I apologize but, I was unable to find it... Anyone know why AT40 sometimes used Billboard's, and other times did their own?

If this has been answered previously, I apologize but, I was unable to find it... Anyone know why AT40 sometimes used Billboard's, and other times did their own? It can only be speculated. I was going to offer up an info page that offers some insight into this, but a quick Google search reveals that the page has, apparently, been de-activated. :( March 5, 1983 LW #1: Patti Austin & James Ingram "Baby, Come to Me"40 40 Night Ranger - Don't Tell Me You Love Me (40)39 -- Dan Fogelberg - Make Love Stay (29) 38 38 Olivia Newton-John - Tied Up (38) (3rd week)37 -- Pat Benatar - Little Too Late (20) 36 39 ABC - Poison Arrow (25) 35 35 Neil Diamond - I'm Alive (35) (3rd week)34 -- The Greg Kihn Band - Jeopardy (2) 33 33 Donna Summer - The Woman in Me (33)32 37 Supertramp - My Kind of Lady (31) 31 -- After The Fire - Der Kommissar (5) Flashback Extra: Stephen Bishop "It Might Be You", which was "four weeks away from hitting the countdown"30 34 Steel Breeze - Dreamin' is Easy (30)29 22 Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love (10) 28 32 Eric Clapton - I've Got a Rock & Roll Heart (11) 27 19 Toto - Africa (1) 26 26 Saga - On the Loose (26)25 31 Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come On Eileen (1) 24 15 Kenny Loggins - Heart to Heart (15) 23 12 Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes (12) 22 25 Frida - I Know There's Something Going On (13) 21 27 Earth, Wind, & Fire - Fall in Love With Me (17) LDD: Kenny Rogers "Through the Years" from Melanie in Indianapolis, IN to her grandparents (also in memory of grandpa, who passed away a year ago), who shared their wisdom about what love means with her, particularly when she went through a painful break-up Flashback Extra: Michael Jackson "Beat It"20 24 Styx - Mr. Roboto (3) 19 23 Joe Jackson - Breaking Us in Two (18) 18 21 Hall & Oates - One On One (7) 17 17 Billy Joel - Allentown (17) (5th week)16 18 Golden Earring - Twilight Zone (10) 15 20 Journey - Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) (8) 14 08 Men at Work - Down Under (1) 13 13 Sammy Hagar - Your Love is Driving Me Crazy (13) 12 16 Christopher Cross - All Right (12)11 14 Lionel Richie - You Are (4) 10 10 Musical Youth - Pass the Dutchie (10)Flashback Extra: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "Change of Heart", which was "a week away from making the countdown"09 11 The Pretenders - Back On the Chain Gang (5) 08 09 Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton - We've Got Tonight (6) 07 07 Eddie Rabbitt & Crystal Gayle - You and I (7) (4th week)LDD: The Beatles "The Long and Winding Road" from Steve in Miriam, KS to the Shawnee Mission North classes of 1981 and 1982, who he feels are very special to him, as he also feels that this song mirrors his own life; the '82 class is also the class he graduated with06 01 Patti Austin & James Ingram - Baby, Come to Me (1) 05 06 Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf (3) 04 05 Culture Club - Do You Really Want to Hurt Me (2) 03 03 The Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut (3)Flashback Extra: The Psychedelic Furs "Love My Way", which debuted that week at #7302 02 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Shame on the Moon (2) 01 04 Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (1)NOTES: - This was, in fact, the debut show for the American Top 40: The 80s series, originally airing the weekend of April 7-8, 2007.
- WCRZ played all four extras. They've been doing so for at least several weeks now - possibly every week so far this year, though I can't be sure. In any case, it's looking like this is the new trend for them.
- Shockingly, another week where Casey actually did not read the #1s on Billboard's other charts - though as with 6-27-87, there was a story for the new #1 song that involved some of them.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Billie Jean"
- #1 on the Album chart: Thriller by Michael Jackson
- #1 on the Country chart: "If Hollywood Don't Need You (Honey I Still Do)" by Don Williams

The three that fall out are: "Needles and Pins" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers with Stevie Nicks (LW: 37), "Burning Heart" by Survivor (LW: 34), and "Conga" by Miami Sound Machine (LW: 30). NOTES: - Fairly early first LDD - but, not the earliest first LDD I've ever heard. That honor goes to 12-27-86, whose first LDD is #38 "Human".
- Well, so much for WCRZ playing all the extras; they didn't play any tonight. Go figure... Extras come from WRIP, which did play all four but also mixed up the final hour, playing the final segment after the middle 6-5, then coming back for the rest.
- Very interesting that the original German "Rock Me Amadeus" was played (as on 4-5, three weeks later). Besides these two, what other weeks was the German-inclusive version played?
- TAKING A PAGE FROM PAUL HARVEY WITH...THE REST OF THE STORY: Back on 1-17-87, Casey pointed out the chart feat of Ben E. King's being the first artist to hit the Top 10 in four different decades. He also mentioned that Ben was one of six artists who'd hit the Top 40 in four different decades. Here, he answered a Question Letter asking the latter question (obviously Ben wouldn't be included yet, so the answer reveals the other five).
- Interesting that "Kyrie" received the softer jingle.
- Another week with just two songs peaking! 2-7-87 I remember is another - though by now, I've heard several such weeks so I can't remember all of them.
- It's another week with a spoiler-less Casey for the new #1 song - he teases before the commercial that it's by a group who's gone through many changes, and in this case both Top 2 groups fit that descriptor.
- #1 on the Soul chart: "Your Smile" by Rene & Angela
- #1 on the Country chart: "I Could Get Used to You" by Exile
- #1 on the Album chart: Whitney Houston

Cute analogy however, seeing that this is a 1986 broadcast and a lot of time has passed since then, I vote for the CONTINUATION of the story rather than the REST. A number of artists had top 10's in four different decades since Ben E King
Not sure about AT40 but on the Hot 100 anyway, Michael Jackson did it in 5 decades, in fact (60's, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s)

Main reason I don't cite them all here is because I feel like I'd be bashing these shows to death after awhile. And yes, MJ would count for five decades since both "You Rock My World" and "Butterflies" hit AT40 in 2001/02.

I have a question about this week's 80's show from 3/15/86. Casey did a story I think as an intro to Charlie Sexton at #20. Casey told us about the first teenager to debut on the Hot 100. Casey had said that the first teen to debut on the Hot 100 was when the chart was just week's old. The year was 1958 and come to find out the first teen to debut was legendary actress and musician, Judy Garland who played Dorothy in Wizard of Oz. I missed part of Casey's story and so my question is what was the name of Judy's song that debuted that week? Casey had said back then the chart was just ten positions and she debuted at #7. Also along with the name of Judy's song, where did it eventually peak? I do a lot of music trivia on my FB page and this would be a great trivia question. If anyone heard that story or knows this please help. TY I appreciate it.

Took some digging, but it looks like the Top 10 position chart started in 1940 - Judy's debut was on the third week of the chart's existence. She'd take the song to #3: umdmusic.com/default.asp?Lang=English&Chart=D&ChDay=14&ChMonth=09&ChYear=1940&ChBand=&ChSong=

Original extras: None Premiere optional extras: Hour #1: "One Less Set Of Footsteps" - Jim Croce (#42) Hour #2: "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" - Vicki Lawrence (#47) Hour #3: "I'm Doing Fine Now" - New York City (#86) I love how Premiere did these extras! Rather than Larry Morgan, all three were introduced by Casey--the first two being "AT40 Extras" and the third an "AT40 Special"--(seemingly?) borrowed from other AT40 episodes. The bit about Jim Croce in basic training and especially the story behind "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" were truly fascinating. I'm SO glad KOKZ continues to include all the extras every week! So, when were these extras originally aired? (I'm particularly curious about #3.) By the way, this entire show sounded so good, I have to wonder if Premiere (or, Charis, I presume) recently improved their remastering process. While I'm used to better sound from the later shows, the quality of this one from 1973 caught me by surprise; even Casey sounded better than I've noticed before.
