CALM BEFORE THE SEPTEMBER STORM Christian Hip-Hop vs. Hardcore Rappers in Battle for #1 Next Week
August 29, 2012
It’s always darkest just before the dawn, or in this case, the beginning of the much-anticipated fall rush of new superstar releases. At least that’s the hope of beleaguered music retailers around this great country of ours, who weighed in with the results of one-day sales. In what is hopefully the calm before the September storm, it looks like tobyMac and Slaughterhouse will fight it out for #1 next week. The wild card will be sales from the Christian market for veteran tobyMac, the rapper formerly known as Kevin Michael McKeehan, whose Forefront album, Eye on It, is looking at sales of 50-60k.
That puts it head to head for #1 on next week’s chart with Shady/ Aftermath/Interscope Eminem protégés and supergroup Slaughterhouse with their sophomore album, Welcome to Our House. The band features Joe Budden, Crooked I, Joell Ortiz and Royce da 5”9”.
Collective Sounds’ Alanis Morissette album, Havoc and Bright Lights, her first since 2008’s Flavors of Entanglement, is on target for between 37-42k in first-week sales. That release sold 70k in its first week.
Album sales were down 4% vs. last week, down 2% vs. same week last year and down 4% year to date.
Track sales were down 5% vs. last week, up 5% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.
TEA sales were down 4% vs. last week, flat vs. same week last year and down 1% year to date.

Considering all of their singles have been flops/very commercial, I'm not surprised at all with these numbers. Honestly, anything more than 80k would have blown me away.

Damn, I was hoping Alanis could sell over 50K. Too bad she doesn't have the critical acclaim Fiona's album has.

Granted they've lacked a decisive hit single on any format thus far, but definitely disappointing numbers for Slaughterhouse here, considering their return has been hyped for months on end and that Eminem has been a key mouthpiece to the project.
If they can't improve their numbers beyond the 55-60K projection, it's all but impossible to concede this as an underachievement.

My guess is Tobymac will get it. Hope it's Slaughterhouse.
Just a damn shame horrible rappers like 2Chainz can do 200K and Slaughterhouse may not even do 60k.
Then again, record sales has never been about quality per say. Horrible artists have always sold a ton. But 2Chainz may be the worst artist of all time and for that to do 140k better then true rappers like the four member of Slaughterhouse is just sad.
Read an article today that there independent debut has sold 77k to date. They won't top that in one week under a major label backing.
Yellawolf did 41k in his first week at Shady for his debut album. Slaughterhouse won't do much more. As far as commercial success...Shady 2.0 has not been. But I do think the 4 members of Slaughterhouse and Yellawolf are extremely talented. Just not artists made for commercial success.
Look at D12, 50 Cent and Obie Trice. Shady 1.0 was a major commercial success. And now...D12 is not putting out anything anymore. Obie Trice was dropped and finally put out another album but that didnt do jack. And 50 Cent didnt sell crap last album. It went gold barely.
At least the fallacy that you can just put Eminem's name on a project and it will sell massive can be put to bed. For years i have heard Em haters say the only reason some of these artist on Shady sell are because of Em's name. I think that can be put to bed. A handful of people may buy something only because Em's associated with it but not enough to make a difference.
They go "Eminem could put out an album of him farting on all tracks and it would Debut #1". While that could be true...I think this proves that it would not.
For the record i hardly consider Tobymac rap or hip hop. His stuff is played on this christian station i listen to when i go to sleep and it's not rap at all. I consider it more light rock than anything.
Is this rap? "City On Our Knees"? Seriously? I don't consider that hip-hop.
Tonight's the night For the sinners and the saints Two worlds collide in a beautiful display It's all love tonight When we step across the line We can sail across the sea To a city with one king A city on our knees A city on our knees Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
I don't call that rap Toby. lol.

Billboard article: Slaughterhouse & TobyMac Albums Vying for No. 1 on Billboard 200by Keith Caulfield, L.A. | August 29, 2012 6:56 EDT In a quiet week for new album releases, two are aiming for the top of the Billboard 200 chart next week. Hip-hop supergroup Slaughterhouse and Christian artist TobyMac could each claim the No. 1 slot with their respective new albums, so say industry sources. The new Billboard 200 chart's top 10 will be revealed on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 5. Both Slaughterhouse's "Welcome to Our House" and TobyMac's "Eye On It" could sell around 50,000 to 60,000 by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Sept. 2. The former's self-titled debut studio album, released in 2009, bowed and peaked at No. 25 off an 18,000 start (according to Nielsen SoundScan). Since then, the act (comprising Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Crooked I and Joell Ortiz) moved from eOne Records over to Shady/Interscope, through which the new set has been released. As for TobyMac, his album could mark both his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and the first since 1997 to hit No. 1 on both the big chart and the Christian Albums chart. LeAnn Rimes' "You Light Up My Life - Inspirational Songs" was the last to crown both lists, in September of that year. Other sets looking for a top 10 start next week include Alanis Morissette's "Havoc and Bright Lights" and perhaps Circa Survive's "Violent Waves." The sales at the top of the Billboard 200 won't start to brighten until mid-September. On Sept. 11, we'll see the bows of Bob Dylan's "Tempest" and Little Big Town's "Tornado." Then on Sept. 18, an avalanche of A-list albums arrive: including the G.O.O.D. Music "Cruel Summer" compilation, P!nk's "The Truth About Love," Carly Rae Jepsen's "Kiss" and the Killers' "Battle Born." www.billboard.com/news#/news/slaughterhouse-tobymac-albums-vying-for-1007909792.story

Bolstered by strong sales from the Christian market, tobyMac should win the fight for #1 next week, the first Christian/gospel artist to do so in recent memory. Here's how it looks headed into the Labor Day weekend, with no releases selling in six figures:
*tobyMac (Forefront) 60-65k *Slaughterhouse (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 50-55k Trey Songz (Atlantic) 40-45k *Alanis Morissette (Collective Sounds) 35-40k Now 43 (Capitol/EMI) 30-35k 2 Chainz (Def Jam/IDJ) 27-30k Adele (XL/Columbia) 21-24k fun. (Fueled By Ramen) 19-22k Maroon 5 (A&M/Octone) 19-22k Rick Ross (Def Jam/IDJ) 18-21k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 17-20k One Direction (Syco/Columbia) 17-20k Zac Brown Band (Atlantic) 14-17k Lumineers (Dualtone) 13-15k DJ Khaled (Cash Money/Republic) 13-15k Of Monsters & Men (Republic) 13-15k Carrie Underwood (19/Arista Nashville) 13-15k Luke Bryan (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 13-15k

Sigh. Won't even Debut #1.
We need Paul Rosenberg to Pull a Drake or a Wayne a by 50k copies himself or something. lol.
Then again, can't expect Slaughterhouse to win the christian market.

I just wish they would label it correctly. It's not hip-hop or rap. The AMG album review makes it clear it's more of a pop record for TobyMac. That's my beef. People calling that hip-hop and rap? It's not. www.allmusic.com/album/eye-on-it-mw0002406330

Well then now we all know for sure Hell, Adele might return to the top 10 in January! LOL Well it's obviously too early to say anything for sure given how amazing 21 has sold so far. However, I don't think that will happen, unless January is sloooooooooooow. I think she'll get a Christmas boost, but until holiday sales start to pick up, she's going to continue to slowly fall, and I can easily see her dying down to similar sales after Christmas, which I don't know if those would put her top 10 anymore.

The sad part is Adele might not release a new record if 21 is still selling well. :)

Why aren't more people talking about Alanis' record?
Her last album sold over 300k in the States and 600k worldwide.
Hopefully, she'll be able to do the same this time around. If she does, she'll be making a ton of money on this project since this is an independent release (Collective Sounds Records) using various major label distributors (Sony/Universal/etc.) around the world. A much better situation for her in this stage of her career than her Maverick deal.

Adele's time in the top 10 will be over permanently by the end of September. It is nearly out of the top 10 now, sales are declining, 4th quarter albums will accelerate the drop Unless of course the amazon 99 cent sales bring it back for a week

the birth of Adele's child could spark sales for a week -- supposedly she's due within a month

A full moon could do it too. WIth this album, anything is possible. However, the most likely scenario is that it is nearly done in the top 10

I wouldn't be surprised if the album starts getting sales since it's finally not selling as much, so sales over the holidays put it back in the top 10. Wouldn't surprise me at all.
As for the Amazon 99 cent deal, those seem to have disappeared. :'(

I'm glad about that.. Obscure Phil Collins albums in top ten for a week is just weird (even though I love Phil Collins)
