they obviously have def. 'issues' with Chic and or Nile Rodgers but I def. think its the first (not Nile). They reeally need to induct him in some way shape or form!! He's a legendary/iconic producer.

Other have had to wait longer than Chic, but the group has had eight nominations thus far. Just a matter of time. Some got in on their seventh and eighth nominations- and Solomon Burke got in on his 10th nomination.
It's intriguing how some go years without a single nomination, and then score the first and get in on that.

So who's eligible next year?
Any "automatics"?

I'm going by memory, but these are some of the stand-outs that become eligible with the next cycle:
Green Day Garth Brooks Nine Inch Nails Pavement Queen Latifah Sarah McLachlan
Green Day probably has the best chance...

Yah, Green Day would be the standout and best shot at first-year nomination and/or induction.
Tom Petty, as a solo act, becomes eligible, but TP/Heartbreakers may be enough.

^Yes- she, Alannah Myles and Young MC are shoo-ins. On a more serious note, I enjoy her pop, and she did have a big hand in two very large (and acclaimed) hits, "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and "Toxic."

^If it were based on such things, which it's not. Garth Brooks more than likely won't be seriously considered.

Garth Brooks may eventually get a nomination but I don't expect one any time soon.

Another thing working against Brooks is that country is not well-represented in the Rock Hall. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year.

Of the eligible class next year Green Day hands down will be the first name into the Hall, whether it be their first year or a few years down the road. Not only is genre working in their favor here, they paved the way for several successful bands to follow. All of their other success (two defining eras, still selling out/setting attendance records in stadiums, the award-winning musical, and is generally known as one of the best live bands) just adds to the fact that they have had great staying power even if the sub-genre they revived isn't as popular today.

Of that entire list, Green Day are the only given. Ani DiFranco, Gang Starr, and Pavement are critically respected but may be a bit too obscure to ever get more than a nomination; Barenaked Ladies, Gin Blossoms, and even Garth were popular but I don't think they stand any legit chance; Queen Latifah and Sarah MacLachlan may have enough vocal hardcore supporters that may eventually get them in 10+ years down the road; Nine Inch Nails will eventually get in but maybe not on the first try; Lenny Kravitz feels like he'll be a perennial on the ballot but won't get in until his 6th or 7th try (when voters decide he's a better option than any of the late 90s-early 2000s rap/metal bands).

I think Tom Petty has a good shot at getting in.

^But, he's already in, right?
I think they should skip Tom, but it is a weak year for new eligibles.

I didn't realize he was already inducted in 2002 under Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers but that takes out any doubt he's hall of fame material. Obviously he is since he's in it.
But he had some really big hits as a solo artist Won't Back Down & Free Fallin and Running Down a Dream so he does have a shot at solo artist. I doubt it has anything to do with how many albums you've put out. How many did Jimi Hendrix put out? 3 maybe. The preference I'd assume for the rock n Roll hall of fame is for people who are Rock n Roll artists first and one who had influence which is Tom Petty who had besides having his band & the Traveling Wilburys also had solo success.

Not saying it's impossible he'll be inducted as a solo artist, but I do think it's unlikely. I don't think his solo career is all that differentiated from his Heartbreakers career in most people's minds, especially since members of the Heartbreakers appeared on all of his solo albums.

I agree that Petty's solo career hasn't distinguished itself enough from TP & the Heartbreakers.

This years group is good overall, but I would definitely have preferred Chic over Peter Gabriel. Oh well. Really happy to see Daryl and John finally getting in!
From the new people next year, Green Day is the only one I can see getting in immediately, but it's not a sure call like it was for Nirvana.
Isn't De La Soul also eligible? Their first album came out in 1989. I'd love to see Gang Starr get in, but that probably won't happen for a long time if it does.

Both for his work with Genesis and his solo work.

Kiss will not be performing.

Kiss says it won't play at Rock HOF induction
By WAYNE PARRY Associated Press
WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Kiss won't rock and roll all night — or at any point during the day, either — when they are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, the band said Sunday.
The 40-year-old group is unable to agree on which lineup should perform during the April 10 ceremony in New York City, and has decided not to plug in at all.
The dispute concerns whether original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss would join Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley in a live performance, or whether the current lineup of Stanley, Simmons, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer would play instead.
In a message on its website, Kiss said it won't perform with any lineup, calling it "an emotional situation where there is no way to please everyone."
"Our intention was to celebrate the entire history of Kiss and give credit to all members, including longtime present members Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, and additionally Bruce Kulick and Eric Carr all who have made this band what it is, regardless of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame's point of view," the band wrote on its web site. "Although Kiss has moved forward far longer without them, Ace and Peter are at the very foundation of what we have built and this would all be impossible had they not been a part of it in the beginning."
The band made no mention of former guitarists Vinnie Vincent, who helped kick off the band's unmasked era, or Mark St. John, who was with the band briefly in 1984 and who died in 2007.
"It is over 13 years since the original lineup has played together in makeup and we believe the memory of those times would not be enhanced," Kiss wrote on its site. "To bring this to a quick end, we have decided not to play in any line-up, and we will focus our attention on celebrating our induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame."
The festering dispute was brought to a boil when Frehley called into Eddie Trunk's syndicated radio show Friday night to say that Simmons and Stanley had rejected a reunion with the original four members for the induction.
"They just shot down any type of reunion with us," Frehley said during the broadcast. "It's very frustrating. It's what the fans wanted, it's what the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame wanted, and it's not gonna happen. You don't want to do something for the fans after 40 years of them supporting you?"
The band's statement said it has never refused to play with Frehley and Criss.
Criss, who lives in Wall Township, N.J., said he wanted to let fans know there would be no reunion before they bought tickets for the induction ceremony, which range from $120 to nearly $600.
"This is disgraceful, and I feel bad for the fans who were looking forward to the four of us being inducted together," he said.
Criss did not indicate whether he would attend the induction; Frehley said he is unsure whether he'll be there.
Kiss began in 1973, and the original lineup played together until 1980. They reunited from 1996 to 2000, but the band has continued with replacement members wearing the Frehley and Criss makeup and costumes.
