I'm more shocked that NWA didn't make it in - especially with no other rap competition. I'm disappointed that NIN didn't make it because I really like them.
Kind of a blah induction class....

Ugh at Green Day and Nirvana getting in so quickly when actual legends are shut out year after year.

Also Joan Jett in before Stevie Nicks (solo) and Pat Benatar annoys me.

Chic will extend its record for most nominations when it eventually does get inducted.
With Heart and and Joan Jett in, there's no reason why Pat Benatar shouldn't- finally- be considered. None of these acts were big critical successes, yet their influence/impact is undeniable.

May have been born in 1990, but it sure was a dreadful year in music...

^Not exactly. Not my faves but Black Crows, A Tribe Called Quest, Blur, Blues Travelers, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins all had some critical success.
I loved Mariah Carey and Wilson Phillips in 1990/1991. And Dee-Lite's groove was in my heart...

Ugh at Green Day and Nirvana getting in so quickly when actual legends are shut out year after year. Nirvana IS legendary, though. I don't why but at Green Day getting in two years after they inducted GN'R in with a gigantic cluster***k of an induction.

I think the only lock for next year is the Smashing Pumpkins. Mariah's a toss up, but I think she'll fall closer to the Whitney side of things than the Madonna side. Tribe might eventually get a nomination, but there are a lot of hip-hop legends ahead of them in line (like NWA, which is why Ice Cube won't get in right away). Alice In Chains might get a nomination, but not for many years. Oh, and Nelson. First time nomination and induction, 100%.

I hope they give Mariah a fair shot... If Whitney's death didn't prompt her induction I wouldn't hold my breath for Mariah.

Whitney Houston is an example of a big-voiced "diva," who, like Mariah, has influenced vocalists who followed, but who isn't regarded the best artistically. What separates the two is that Mariah has co-composed nearly all of her material- but, that's not really going to make much of a difference. Plus, Whitney, at least early on, was an influence on Mariah.
The Rock Hall committee may give her more serious consideration later on, but it's not likely to do so in her first years of eligibility. Janet Jackson is another of the big pop "divas" who, despite great influence on other acts, has yet to receive a nomination, despite being eligible since 2007. And she/her music have enjoyed more critical love than Houston and Carey.

I mean, it's easy to complain about acts who haven't gotten in yet but are worthy (and there are many), or even to complain about the regrettable omissions who aren't ever likely to get in (and there are at least a few), but looking at this list, there's no inductee who doesn't merit inclusion, so I'm pretty happy with this group. With Heart and and Joan Jett in, there's no reason why Pat Benatar shouldn't- finally- be considered. None of these acts were big critical successes, yet their influence/impact is undeniable. I like Benatar's music and wouldn't complain if she made it, but, out of curiosity, what would you say her undeniable impact is? Other than genetics, why Nelson? Pretty sure he was joking.

RE Benatar- I just think her impact and influence on female acts is of a similar level to the likes of Heart and Joan Jett. Her Greatest Hits has comments from some of those women (i.e. Martina McBride, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Go-Gos, etc.)
Plus, "Heartbreaker," "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," "Love is a Battlefield" and "We Belong"-classic radio staples.

Neither ones are or were rock stars There are people who have been nominated and some that have even gotten in that are not "rock stars". Whitney was an incredible singer who influenced many including Mariah. However, she was handed songs while Mariah has written and produced the majority of her material, created classic songs in the process, played a big role in blending pop and hip hop tunes that was not just created as album cuts but put out as singles and being heard all around. She has been just as influential to many in the industry and upcoming singers. While Whitney is a great singer, Mariah is a great artist.

If they get in great but just sayin' if Whitney or Mariah do not get into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, genre might be a possible reason.

If you're expecting Mariah to get nominated next year, let alone get in, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. The inductees generally lean toward the rock genre and acts that have received quite a bit of critical acclaim. Mariah doesn't fit into either of those categories. Bill Withers is the only regular inductee this year who isn't a rock act, and he's been eligible almost 20 years at this point.

How did Joan jett get in? She only had one big hit "I love rock and roll" and 2 minor hits,"Crimson and clover",and "I hate myself for loving you."She was only popular for 2 years thats it.She doesnt deserve to be in the rock and roll hall of fame. People saying that Mariah or Whitney dont deserve it are crazy.
